Default TTBC May 2016: Souls of Darkness by Gary Butterfield

Quote:
Do you remember the Worlds of Power books? I do. Do you like Dark Souls? I professionally like Dark Souls! When these two interests collide, you get Souls of Darkness. Souls of Darkness is a a parody of those Worlds of Power Books but it's written as if Dark Souls was a NES game. Yes, I know it's confusing. Here are the important parts:

* What if Dark Souls was a NES game? How would that work? Whoa!

* What if a young girl got sucked into the game and got to experience a bunch of hilarious, exciting adventures in her favorite title?

* What if the book featured amazing art by Nick Daniel?

* What if the book (and associated Kickstarter side items) told a story open to interpretation, lampooning and emulating the way Dark Souls tells stories?

* What if it was packed with love for the Dark Souls community? Tons of easter eggs!
Sorry this is late. Because we're on a shortened timeline, and Dark Souls 3 just came out, and we're all video game nerds (mostly) who are nostalgic for the gaming of our youth I thought Gary Butterfield's fabulous kickstarted parody of the old World of Power books would be a fantastic, and quick, read.

PDFs of the book can be found here

The audio book here

Either can be purchased for under $10. We'll return next month with a "real" book.

Thanks!

Wow. I wasn't expecting much but this book really does a great job of mimicking the old Worlds of Power books.

It's also a pretty good summary of Dark Souls.

I did! It reminded me of my son's Minecraft fan-fiction, only with better art.

I've only played a bit of Demon's Souls (no Dark) and never read any game books but I still got the joke, I think.

That's a good way of thinking about it.

Apparently the book did well enough that Butterfield is writing a second one riffing on Fallout. The third one specifically but I don't recall.

Anyway thanks for playing!
