Just chiming in to say that Understanding Comics is great (you naysayers should be ashamed of yourselves) and The Sculptor is terrible and pitifully embarrassing for McCloud (you yeasayers should be ashamed of yourselves).

I think it's a comic wherein one of the protagonists of a generic comic about two gamer guys discovers his wife has just had a miscarriage.

(and mourns about how awful it is for him, the parent who did not just have a miscarriage and for whom it is certainly terrible but probably not on the same level, like, he is sad that he will never get to give his infant the infant-size Xbox controller that would make his baby a gamer)

(also note the exceptional linework and diversity of faces; the growing horror in his eyes and expression, it is the first time that 8^U becomes B^l)

(also it's set among a panoply of other generally poor decisions made by comic artist Tim Buckley, its frequent memetic expression encoding both its existence as the apex of the author's emotional work and its existence as the nadir of his good judgment; it has cemented his status as the whipping boy of webcomics, however well-deserved)

he ended the comic with a storyline about traveling to an apocalyptic future where all the characters were dying or dead, eventually culminating in his self-insert protagonist having to sacrifice himself to prevent it from coming to pass.

the ending of CAD could be interpreted as a metaphor for the creator finally discovering self-awareness.

anyhow that's the optimistic way of looking at it.

Correction; He ended the main character's storyline like that. A lot of the comic was also random gags and humor based off of random and/or current games, and that side still continues.

I think people are disinclined to explain it because:
  • It's pretty unimportant and best forgotten.
  • It requires a long explanation with a lot of context. That comic is short-hand for a whole lot of Tim Buckley antipathy that's not necessarily related to that one strip.
  • I feel like you kind of had to be there to fully appreciate what a shit-show it was at the time.

It's also worth noting that the strips that came immediately before Loss.jpg were 100% of the MONKEY CHEESE PIRATE NINJA BACON variety, with absolutely no foreshadowing or any other indication that Ctrl-Alt-Delete was about to enter a dramatic storyline.

No matter where you're driving that plot wagon, you still have to hit the clutch whenever you shift gears.
