So, who’s going to head the investigation into the Grannys for Vidja Black Market case?

My drawing wrist has had a hitch in it the past couple days, so I'm taking a break this weekend. I'm back to normal hours at work so I shouldn't be so tired on weekdays now, so I hope to get this all wrapped up before September.

#8 Mega Man 9 (Multi, NA, 2008, Capcom)
Created by Gerald de Jesus
Votes: 4 for 108 points
Highest: Issun (#2)

As part of the promotional wave surrounding the release of retro-themed Mega Man 9, Capcom decided to play up the "bad box arts" angle they had commissioned in the 80s for the first two games, but hire a professional artist to mimic those weird off-beat models and uncharacteristic backgrounds in a clever homage to those heady days of early localization. The result is arguably the best box art in the classic Mega Man canon...at the very least in terms of the American releases.

iam8bit's Gerald de Jesus was behind this great retro throwback, and beyond his artistic brush with the famed video game art exhibit he's done freelance work on many a animation show, including Teen Titans Go!, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, The Book of Life, Nick's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, among others.

ps - I'll be back on Saturday with authentic new comics/posts I just had a tear and ran with it

Mega Man 9 is to box art what Sharknado wishes it was to film.

Also best comic yet, WC.

Thank you! I was deeply amused by the idea and I think it turned out well.

It's pretty great alright. Man, movies that aim for so bad their good bum me out. YOU CAN'T MANUFACTURE THAT SHIT, SNAKES ON A PLANE! (Though I certainly understand the desire too).

I really need to play some classic Mega Man again. When I was a kid, it was my favourite. Never played the X series, though.

#7 Gradius (NES, NA, 1986, Konami)
Created by unknown
Votes: 5 for 135 points
Highest: Dracula (#2)

Out of all of the box art options available to players in 1986, it is almost unquestionable that Konami's Gradius was the most prominent on the shelf. The silver border surrounding this masterwork of painting sci-fi action became Konami's house style (as we've seen with Life Force and Castlevania) for most of its NES run. It also beautifully captures the essence of the shoot-em-up lurking within.

You'll also notice our point tally went up significantly from #8 to #7; nearly 30 points!

Alas, my efforts to find the illustrator responsible for this has been fruitless, but I do have a larger, non-logo version of the art to share:

Mega Man X the first is one of the greatest games ever made, and only 2 and 3 of the OG series can compete with it for sheer quality.

Lost Skeleton of Cadavra managed to pull it off. The first one at least. The sequel leaned in too hard to the comedy and wound up with a weaker film.

As for Gradius, I voted it highly! Because it is just amazin’

I also voted high for Gradius. Love the full version of the painting! Interesting that they changed the color of the giant battleship, though it's probably just for better contrast against the silver border.

#6 Prince of Persia (SNES, JP, 1992, Masaya/Arsys)
Created by Katsuya Tereda (may be NSFW)
Votes: 5 for 154 points
Highest: Johnny Unusual, Loki, WildcatJF (#2)

Prince of Persia is an iconic puzzle/platformer, but this particular illustration exceeds at capturing the intrigue of the game's narrative better than anything else I've seen. The exquisite linework, composition and coloring combine to create a divine example of video game box art, and it's a shame Konami abandoned it during their localization of Masaya's port of the game for North America and Europe. You can look at the development of the illustration here.

Katsuya Teruda, aka "RAKUGAKING", has been illustrating for video games for quite some time. To American audiences, he is perhaps best known for contributing to Nintendo Power, specifically for several Legend of Zelda games, Secret of Mana, Dragon Warrior and potentially others. He has had a hand in illustrating pieces for Jake Hunter: Detective Stories, Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Wizardry and more. He also provided character design for the anime Blood: The Last Vampire.

Here's a non-logo version:

Hell yeah, now that's a cover. Nice to get some Terada up ins. I love his art.

I've toyed around with the idea of scanning all of my old Nintendo Powers to make a publicly available archive of NP Terada art, because I'm always disappointed when I go looking how little of it I can find, and how poor quality much of what I do find is. There's a bunch of games that he did NP art for that most folks don't even remember. I haven't done it, though, because lazy.

ETA: Every time someone starts talking shit about old NP Terada art for being off-model, I break out in hives.

I did some research for this topic and this one REALLY grabbed me. A lot of what made a lot of internet lists for "best game cover art" doesn't really speak to me, but this one is awesome. A lot of my high ranking lists were sort of off-beat and/or goofy, but this is a game that just sells the adventure.

Nice! Embellishes the game, but not to the point where you're wondering what the hell the artist was thinking.

I thought the art style was familiar and then you said he did the NP art for Secret of Mana and it clicked.

It's a good cover with excellent composition (the negative space accounting for title placement is great) and colours, and I thought about including it on my list, but ultimately didn't because of the caricaturish way race is depicted and framed on the piece. It's an element with other PoP cover art too, but I didn't vote for those either.

... wait, is there something to get other than it's the usual Japan-style cartoony Megaman layout?

Actually now that I'm staring at it too much, the Met is a little weird, you usually don't see that much "body" actually drawn for them.

9 had the more Gastropod-y snail-Mets like MM1 had. That’s not a body so much as it’s an abundance of chin.
