Default NieR 2: NieReR

Seriously, someone call Deptford. It's happening.

With Platinum, no less.

I'm not sure what they're going to do with this considering what happens to the game's namesake in the original what with being erased from existence and all but we'll see!

For me, this is by a wide margin the most exciting thing from E3 2015 so far.

And that's an E3 that includes Cuphead, the FF7 remake and a new StarFox. So yeah. Pretty jazzed.

Character designer Akihiko Yoshida, on being told to design a female protagonist: "Can I give her a a long-sleeved short frock and thigh-highs? Because that's kinda my thing."

By far the best announcement this E3. Time to go listen to the NieR soundtrack again.

I wasn't really interested in Nier at all, then I heard the OST and really loved it, so I went and watched a gameplay trailer. But the gameplay and the world looked so bland and boring that I quickly discarded the idea to ever buy the game.

Yeah I don't think the trailer gets across how odd Nier is - like one dungeon is a fixed-camera survival horror reference, another is a visual novel, yet another plays like a bullet hell shooter, another is a Diablo-style hack and slash, and another plays like a 3D Zelda-like.

Essentially Nier has themed dungeons, but those themes are different video game genres.

Not saying you'd necessarily like it, but just saying Nier isn't as straight-forward as it first appears.

I am looking forward to learning what the subtitle is only after you finish the first playthrough and then your perception of the entire game you just played is changed.

Also yeah, watching my friend play the visual novel part was what tipped my hand in knowing I had to play the original. I still haven't gotten around to it but I do own it at least and now have an impetus to get to it sometime this decade.

Like I gushed over on IRC, I'm pretty sure I heard that music riff on Ashes of Dreams when we saw that one character in the teaser.

But anyway, given the purpose and ending of Drakengard 3? I'm REALLY intrigued by the storytelling path this game will take.

Yeah no, as was said Nier at least remains enjoyable throughout.

Also it maintains a consistent style throughout - it doesn't suddenly shift into 8-bit or anything like that. The themes are just like the themes you'd get in a Zelda dungeon, only instead of "Fire Dungeon" or "Water Temple", you have "Visual Novel Dungeon" or "Survival Horror House" - not that they are named such, but that's how they function.

And, visual novel portion aside, everything plays according to the same standard control scheme that you use throughout the game.

This actually really bothers me. Like, I am a gigantic NieR fan, but I'm kinda bummed at the idea of a sequel? It's mere existence feels kind of like a slight to the original. I took the spoilered part of the original so seriously that I gave away my copy of the game to someone else when I was done with it (just as it had been given to me), and advised them to do the same when they were done. I really liked the idea of it being a free but transient experience. I dunno, that sounds stupid now that I see it typed out in front of me, but I really don't feel like NieR needed a sequel.

Man, I am so down for this. Nier could be frustratingly repetitive and grindy, but every now and then the game would take a crazy turn in a direction I wasn't expecting and kept me hooked. It's just such an interesting world. With Platinum at the helm, I have high hopes for how this one is going to play.

I'll be honest; it's the first game I've heard about from E3 that really excites me. Of course, I say that who hasn't been following everything that's been announced.

who's to say it's a chronological sequel? plenty of stories to tell in this world before NieR.

Also, Drakengard 3.

No, seriously, spoilers.

Basically, Drakengard 3 results in undoing most, if not all, of the timeline that leads to Drakengard Ending E and thus Nier itself. My guess is this is not a chronological se/prequel, but an alternate history altogether.

Drakengard 3 was kinda garbage in both gameplay and story, so I'm not as excited as I should be.
