Default Die, SMBX, die: Mario Maker

We'll never be able to prove it, but DAMN, son.

Screw it, let's do Super Talking Time Bros 3 when this thing comes out.
Unless it can't do worlds.
Or sharing.
Or new graphics.
Or new music.
Or anything more advanced than the original Super Mario Bros.
Or... eh, who am I kidding. Of course it won't, and if it does I will eat my own hat.

yeah, it's pretty clear that this is more of a cute Mario Paint-style toy than a serious game creation tool

which is great, frankly

Default No no, it's German for.... The SMBX, The

Yeah, it looks to be nothing more than a toy. I kind of roll my eyes at the SMBX conspiracy theories going on in a few circles.

I can't wait to play around with it, of course, and we should all totally share some levels to the extent the program lets us. But I doubt we'll be able to compile anything resembling a full game out of it.

Should still be fun though.

Thank goodness you can still end the stage even when the castle is blocked.

Cause, in the original NES, you couldn't.

Oh they've been going on about that since stuff similar to SMBX popped up in Super Mario 3D World. There's some SMBX peoples that are convinced that the reason Nintendo allegedly shut Redigit down was so they could steal all the great ideas SMBX had and now that they're putting out this Mario Maker it somehow confirms it.

I'm not even going to bother 'what is the best post'ing it because it's all just very silly.

Mario Maker is the kind of super-obvious-in-retrospect game that Nintendo should have published, like, a decade ago. SMBX would have gotten shut down regardless for obvious reasons.

I thought it seemed really obvious that SMBX was shut down because the creator didn't want to work on it anymore, and the "CAD" was just an excuse to keep people from bugging him about it. Nintendo has not historically been heavy-handed regarding fan projects -- Zelda Classic is still kicking, and so is Super Mario Bros. Crossover.

I can believe that. I've only heard bits and pieces about the SMBX thing, but if Nintendo had indeed brought the hammer down, wouldn't they have been legally justified in doing so?

I also thought this. And it seemed to coincide with the release of Terraria a month or two later (same guy made that, if I'm not mistaken).

But maybe Nintendo sent the CAD to make way for Mario Maker, in which case, why shouldn't they?

Woah, hold on a second here, guys.

I thought we all pretty much agreed that the Nintendo C&D over SMBX was just a cover story because the guy who made it wanted to bury it (presumably so he wouldn't get anyone's attention before he released Terreria, since it's pretty liekly they share a lot of code)? Did something change?

Yeah Redigit wanted SMBX dead so he could move on to Terraria without anybody bothering him to continue it. He hated the SMBX community. Not adding the Starman powerup morphed from a simple oversight to an act of trolling by the end.
Remember that we've already established that any legal C&D requires hard-copy legal documents to be sent and filed. Redigit gave up after a phone call, which could have been from anyone, or nobody at all. It could even have been the trademark arm looking for supermariobros.org and not giving a damn about what was actually on it. In any case, it was as good an excuse as any.

Nintendo doesn't need SMBX to be buried in order to crib from it, because they appear to have been raiding the entire internet for obvious ideas to include in their games of late. In Zelda alone, A Link Between Worlds has some stuff that almost reads like a suspicious nod to Parallel Worlds, and the latest Wii U game has what looks like a suspicious nod to Aaron Diaz's Clockwork Empire fan pitch. Super Smash Bros 4 even has some actually listening to expert players going on.

So is this thread about SMBX, Mario Maker, or crackpot idea-stealing conspiracy theories?

In hindsight, I can't fault Redigit for any of his actions. Sinking hours into one of the best game creators ever made and releasing it for free, only to have people bitch at him that [thing x] wasn't in it has got to be wearing. And knowing the internet as well as he must have, he probably knew the hate mail he would get if he shut everything down because people were being entitled, whiny douche canoes. So he made Nintendo the bad guy and called it a day.

tl;dr This is why the internet can't have nice things

There's going to be a Let's Player who gets internet famous by doing nothing but playing Mario Maker levels.

I was gleefully dancing on SMBX's well-deserved grave after all the trouble we went through to make it do anything, but this works too

I like that the trailer starts with a 1-1 remake. It's a great way to set your expectations, because that's what half of the levels people make are going to be.
