Default Banana Argument Generator

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD

In particular, which of these bananas would you willingly consume (as a whole banana, not as a baking ingredient)? Vote for as many different options as your heart demands. (The correct answer is 7-13, though.) Note that I had to collapse some of these because the poll only allows 10 options at most.

Apparently the two of you who have voted thus far either didn't read the instructions or are super picky banana eaters who will only consume bananas of a precise ripeness? I'm not trying to pin down everyone's preferred ripeness (mine would also be 10), I'm trying to generate a ripeness acceptability gradient.

No, there's gonna be some bullshit at 10. My cut off is 9, but I can't be truly sure until I open the banana itself.

6 is maybe the surest start, but the important thing is that I keep my tongue away from revolting banana mush. (I got a solid vocabulary)

Past nine, the situation becomes fraught. Dangerous.

I don't want to go down like that, bro.

Not this guy.

There wasn't a poll or a second jbear post when I started writing that post. So much I need to read and vote on now.

Bananas exist near a threshold beyond which they cease being food and become horror. That threshold for me is at about #10 for me on this chart (but I would probably eat #11).

I'm down to clown with 6 through 11, but given my druthers I'd take love potion #9

I don't want to make this weird but 1-4 are below the banana age of consent.

1 through 5 are for eating.

The rest are for baking.

6-10 is my range. Too green in one direction. 11 and beyond are only good for banana bread or the trash.

5 through 8 tops, I like my bananas crisp and sour, not bland mushy garbage.

You're calling the ripe ones bland? I think that even most of the folks that turn their noses up at those very good, ripe bananas wouldn't call them bland. It's that green shit that tastes bland.

I agree with you up to the point where I find things like banana bread distasteful because the bananas always taste like they've gone off

I'm actually not speaking from personal experience here, because I don't eat green bananas (they taste bad). But I've heard more than one person tell me that they cause GI distress.

Probably 6-7 for me, although I have developed an allergy to bananas, so I can't eat any of them raw.

I'll eat up to 11, though 9 and 10 are good banana times.

1-5 are not fit for human consumption.

As a kid I would have picked 10 or 11 but these days I prefer a firmer banana. Numbers 6 to 8 look best to me.

#1-5
Suitable mainly for baking (and grilling!) whole, as the insides are still starchy and firm enough to resist direct heat. If a recipe calls for plantains, you can usually substitute unripe bananas in a pinch.

#6-10
Suitable for snacking, sliced on top of pies or cereal, adding to lunch boxes... you name it. Them's good eatin'!*

#11-15
While these are technically still edible on their own, it's not recommended, unless you need to smooth out your bowel movements. Save these for mixing into breads, or freeze them to use in smoothies or make soft-serve.

*you might want to invest in a banana box if you're traveling, though.

Büge is my banana buddy. (Though I'd be willing to snack on 5 or 11 in a pinch)

Shoot, I didn't realize the poll was multi-choice 'til after I'd voted. Anyway, for actual direct eating, I prefer a banana slightly on the underripe side; like 3-7 is acceptable. But these days I almost entirely use bananas as a smoothie ingredient, for which anything from 8-13 is just fine.

6-12 for this guy, though I'd saute 4-5 in some butter and brown sugar.

1-4 are the delicious bananas, but 5-8 are servicable enough.
