I don't understand what he was claiming with the controls in DuckTales Remastered being off because a new-looking game with old controls is somehow weird or problematic.

Looking forward to playing DuckTales 2 and Rescue Rangers 2. By the time those were released I was mostly skipping the NES sections of Nintendo Power because who would want to play that old shit when the Super was right fucking there.

The idea is, basically, the graphics give you a sort of expectation for how the game will control. I forget which Video World he mentioned it in, but his explanation was probably better than anything I could type up right now, so go watch through those.

It's not a problem for me personally, but it's the disconnect between my expectations for fluid control to match the fluid graphics, and what is actually presented. It's strange to play a game with such attractive and modern graphics that controls so stiffly. I wish I could remember the episode I talked about it.

Yeah, I can see that. I don't think it applies here, though. Or maybe it's just me! In any case, I kind of expected that DuckTales Remastered would control just like DuckTales, and it mostly does. Probably would have still been a great game but I think it would be far stranger if they had changed the controls. I'm not sure I'd call the controls stiff, even on the old title. Deliberate, maybe?

But yeah, if you can remember the episode, I'd like to take a gander. Or I suppose I can just watch them all. OMG THAT WAS YOUR INSIDIOUS PLAN TO BEGIN WITH WASN'T IT

I hope after this is released people finally realize Rescue Rangers 2 is greatly superior to the original. I need at least one person to agree with me on this

Also great job as always Madhair

He's South African in the comics but Scottish in DuckTales. He even wears a kilt and a Balmoral.

Not that I trust everything Wikipedia says, but apparently racist policies in South Africa were why his origin was changed.

Quote:
To avoid connections with South African political issues such as apartheid that were a cause of worldwide attention and concern, his origin was changed from South African to Scottish to match that of Scrooge, which led Glomgold to have Scotland-style names in other countries.
And seeing how Flintheart Glomgold is a rich white man duck, it's understandable why they wouldn't want to imply that he got rich by enforcing laws to screw over the non-white/non-duck people, especially considering it's a cartoon that would be viewed by a much wider audience than the comics.

No more than going left in a Mario game (first notwithstanding) is a rewind; that doesn't undo death or anything.

I dunno, TaleSpin controlled in a way I did not find very intuitive, so that's where I'm imagining it coming in.

Got this on PS4 and already finished DuckTales. What a great big heaping spoonful of video game magic these games are.

Good albeit not as extensive content-wise as the extras in MMLC.

There's a Boss Rush (self-explanatory) and Time Attack (finish the game as quickly as possible) with leaderboards just like MMLC and, just like that game, you can watch someone else's attempts if you'd like. The museum options are nice and separated into different sections: Pencil-to-Pixel, Official Art, Odds and Ends, and so on. I'm particularly fond of the box scans, which include NES and Famicom.

I miss the challenge mode remixes from MMLC but I kinda see why they didn't include them here. Each NES MM game feels fundamentally the same but going from DuckTales to TaleSpin to Darkwing Duck (as an example) would be a bit jarring.

Oh, and that awesome-ass Disney Afternoon chiptune theme that played during the reveal trailer plays when the game is on the title screen. I sat there for about 5 minutes when I first booted the game and just fucking reminisced.

And then I demolished DuckTales and cursed Darkwing Duck, like one does.

I have $23 in my PSN wallet, and the game costs $26 Canadian.

The menus for each game also have new remixes with medleys of the more memorable tunes. Easily my favorite extra of the whole package.

Was this coming out on Switch? Otherwise I'll probably get the Steam version.

A Switch version has not been announced at this time. You'd think they would, and they may still, but nothing right now.

My big takeaway from this so far is that I can definitely tell the lag difference between a LCD and a CRT now

Also RR2 is still awesome

Man. Man.

This collection is my gaming childhood. I still know these levels so well and the memories associated with them are incredibly strong.

Also I realized I know the chiptune versions of the themes to the cartoons way better than the actual themes since I played the games far more than I watched the shows.

I beat the Rescue Rangers boss rush already and am excited to tackle the others. Fun stuff.

Ducktales was way harder than I remembered, then I unplugged my 360 controller and used something with an actual d-pad, and now everything's gravy.

I forgot how much easier to control Ducktales 2 is, though. Holy moly.

The rewind option makes co-op Chip and Dale 1 a maddening, hilarious, surreal experience, and also the only remotely conceivable way to beat the final level.

It's interesting to see what games people think are difficult. Like, DuckTales and Chip n' Dales RR 1 are pretty easy snacks to digest for me.

Darkwing Duck can go fuck itself.

I don't know why Capcom decided during the production of the licensed game based on the cartoon duck for tiny babies that this was the time and place to take Mega Man and crank the difficulty so high it cracked the ceiling, but that's what happened.

Died countless times to Quackerjack of all people, and he's the first boss!

Yup, he's a douche.

My biggest problem with Darkwing Duck is the controls. The Quackerjack fight is an example. Down + Jump to drop down, cool. So Down + Jump again to, you know, drop again? Nope. Just press down if you're already hanging.

He took the longest for me to get through on Boss Rush because muscle memory ain't picking up on the controls.
