I played through KH 1.5 when it was released. I did not play any prior KH games, but I'm a massive Disney animation fan.

I liked the care the artists put into the games graphics. Its clear they treated the Disney liscense with love. I also like the decision to keep Micky in the background and have Donald and Goofy play larger roles.

While playing through it, the game reminded me of how I felt playing Ni No Kuni. I wanted to love it, but I merely liked it. The visuals and production values were there, but the combat felt pretty standard and uninspired. Also, why play with Peter Pan or Tarzan, if you can't take them with you? Might as well level up Donald and Goofy since they there with you the whole game and not in limited to one world. Beast is the exception for me, since his animation and rage attacks are so much fun.

I did love the 100 Acre Wood though; that was the highlight of the game for me.

Peter crows when he fights. This is the best thing.

I actually didn't know that. So Goofy and Donald get leveled up when you use World specific characters?

The events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, wherein Keyblade users are plentiful and combing the universe, only occurs about a decade before the events of Kingdom Hearts I, and it seems to be implied through Old Man Xehanort's extreme oldness that keyblade users had been zooming around for decades before that. So it seems completely within reason that a keyblade user would have dropped by and met King Triton before Ariel was even born, and since keyblade users are supposed to be a stealthy lot when it comes to interfering in the events of other worlds, it's also likely Atlantica was the only world where a "good guy" met a keyblade user.

And Triton is a wise-old king archetype, so it's also possible King Mickey stopped by at some point to confer on kingly matters. It's basically how the mouse hooked up with another wise-old king, Ansem the Terminally Stupid.

Either that or Atlantica used to have a bitchin' space program that failed under Triton's rule, and that disaster is what has caused Triton to be so adamant about Ariel sticking to the ocean.

I could no-prize Kingdom Heart plot for days...

You might even say it comes easy breezy to many of them.

Because you can. The games aren't really hard outside of optional superbosses.

However, that still doesn't explain why KH games exist, multiple ones, where you can only play as a single spikey haired OC with no accompanying Disney character at all, or maybe only one at a time. Why would you do that, Square?

Okay, I know the technical reasons are probably why, since I'm mostly talking portable games. However, that's a problem that Square made for themselves. Why are you taking a series that has most of its appeal in its production values, and putting it systems that are far inferior to the PS2 anyway?

I guess I know the answer to that, too: bigger profit for smaller investment.

So why am I asking questions I already know the answers to? I guess as a passive aggressive way of coping with the fact that they've been dragging their heels so long on 3 that by the time it comes out, I probably won't care and neither will a lot of people who count themselves as fans of the series...or at least the big 2 entries.

The thing about Kingdom Hearts is that even the shittiest one is a more fun action RPG than most.

When I just want to hit things in a vaguely anime way, I turn to Kingdom Hearts. Like, sans plot elements, it's an example of a fairly "pure" genre game, like Mario is for platformers and Zelda is for action adventure, if that makes any kind of sense. Plus, I have a lot of fun unraveling nonsensical plot elements and universe mechanics. I have used a white board and some markers to illustrate the whole Xehanort/Ansem/Ansem/Xemnas/Terra/Riku/Braig/Etc. thing for a friend.

This play through I used Tarzan all throughout Deep Jungle and Aladdin through most of the Cave of Wonders (which you kinda want to do anyway)

Both times I replaced Donald, because damn does his AI suck when it comes to spells sometimes.

I've never really gotten Simba to be very useful as a summon.

One of the best parts about the Lion King world is lion cub Sora. Really, seeing how they make the characters "fit in" is one of the most interesting things. Like black and white toon adapted Sora and versions of Donald and Goofy popping up when they visit that version of a world, etc. Which is why when they do boring worlds or retreads it kind of sucks out the excitement.

Interesting. I think also that part of the reason I don't hear much about those games is that the biggest KH fan I know is less of a video game player than a Disney nut.

Note that when the team goes to Atlantica and Lion King world, Goofy is a turtle in both.

I think that it says something that all the most annoying worlds are in the original Kingdom Hearts. Atlantica, Wonderland, and Monstro are all annoying, and Deep Jungle can be a pain.

Kingdom Hearts was Tetsuya Nomura's first director credit.

I wrote A Bit Too Much about why I like 358/2 Days elsewhere on this forum, and I would write a defence of Re:coded but it would pretty much just amount to "I think it's fun, diverse and completely batshit". The "batshit" thing goes a long way with Kingdom Hearts.

Chain of Memories (GBA) is my favourite game in the series though, easily. Played it through to completion at least four times. Both stories. I just love the card system.

I don't know if I'd say it's my favourite, but yeah, Chain of Memories is pretty great. It's just like Mega Man Battle Network in that I hate navigating the world, but the battle system is so much fun.

Yeah, CoM has a surprising amount of strategy involved. Strategy that forces you to acknowledge it if you want to beat bosses in the later half of the game.

Huh. I tried CoM years ago and remember soon being bored by it. The battle system didn't seem to be much fun to me, I think. Maybe I should try it again, if I can get my hands on it.

Also, while I hate navigating through Atlantis, I love the atmosphere, the fact that everyone gets transformed, that Arielle fights on your side, that you fight Ursula,... In short, I love everything about it besides the confusing layout.

I couldn't stand CoM. Just could not get into the card system. I did beat it, along with the end game, but I can't see every trying it again.

I didn't realize what thread I had opened and thought we were talking about Circle of the Moon.

My suggestion of Shooter Mode is therefore not very useful, I think...

So, Atlantica in the first KH isn't quite as bad as I remember it, maybe because I thought to use Ariel and Donald for a double magic duo for a change.

...then my game froze up after beating the second Ursula.

I didn't bump this thread last week when 2.5 HD Remix came out, but it's out, and that means my first chance to play Birth By Sleep.

I've been playing as Terra and I could be addicted to this command system.

It really is the best thing.

Aqua is the best because instead of dodge rolls, she gets dodge cartwheels.
