The Mariners are 6 games over their Pythagorean winning percentage and the Astros are 7 games under. Those numbers over the course of a full season aren't unreasonable, but I'd expect some correction.

No see they have to get our hopes up higher and higher each year so that we have further to fall when they are crushed.

Remember 2016 when everyone said that the Rangers success wouldn’t be sustainable for a whole season because of run differential but then they won the division with 95 wins and the Mariners lost a WC spot by a few games? Fun times.

They outplayed their pythag by 13 games while the Mariners are on pace for 18, and then got swept in the first round.

I wasn’t trying to make any kind of point with that, I just wanted to feel sad.

I can see that.

Someday, though. Someday the mariners will be really good.

The Mariners have won 23 games by 1 run. That is more total victories than either Baltimore or Kansas City, and one fewer than the White Sox.

Every time the Mariners are really good, there's a team in the division that's better. I fucking hate it.

The way the AL is stacked this year is sort of a double-edged sword for Seattle. On the one hand, the fact that New York, Boston and Houston are so good means that so few other teams in the league have enough wins to seriously compete for the second wild card spot. Seattle has an 8 game lead over the Angels. It's hardly over yet, but things are going well.

On the other hand, should Seattle get into the playoffs, they would inevitably be playing against those 3 teams that are so good.

Anyway, we got to see Wade LeBlanc throw 7 2/3 scoreless innings for 9K, 2 hits, and 0 BB against one of the best offenses in baseball, in order to secure at least a series split against a very good team. Today was real fun.

Even if the Mariners go .500 for the rest of the season, they would have 90 wins. That's a pretty good position to be in.

Seattle went through a real brutal stretch of their season and came out still holding onto a 6-game lead over LA for WC2, so yay? Obviously it doesn't feel good going 3-7 in 10 games against Boston and NYY but it hardly ruined the season. They get 4 games against Baltimore next and 3 against KC so here's hoping things turn around.

Cardinals fans are so fun because they're sitting over .500, still very much in contention as things go now, with no huge impending free agents, and lots of young talent that's near or at mlb-ready, and yet people are still saying they need to do an Astros style reboot because they "don't have any talent".

Growing up with Royals and Cardinals fans is such a good contrast.

It's July and it would take an act of God for the Mariners to miss the playoffs and I find myself wondering what that act of God will look like.

Two starting pitcher injuries is usually enough. I've seen enough collapses to know that no lead is safe until it's mathematically locked.

It's a bit frustrating for your team to have a .653 winning percentage at the All-Star break and be 4.5 games back of first because another team has a .694 winning percentage.

Wow, I didn't even notice Boston sneaking past NY. This sucks for us, too, because assuming we can keep ahead of Oakland, I'd much rather play a one-game road playoff against the Sox than the Yankees.

I love that they feature a team with a picture of what looks like teammate on teammate violence.

I haven't been able to watch any of the games because of scheduling conflicts, but I care! I think I'm rooting for Boston, which, as a Blue Jays fan, is a repugnant thought, but Mookie Betts is so damn likeable. But really, I'm rooting for Game 7.

God that was a beautiful homer from Puig and his reaction was amazing.

Seriously, look at the GIF. It's incredible.

I checked out pretty hard after the Braves were knocked out. The truth is I'm getting old and I can't hang with postseason baseball that goes on all fucking night. Even the "normal" games regularly go past my bedtime.

They called it a curse, but for ~95% of the teams, it was more like a blessing

Are you talking sports in general, or just baseball? Because for baseball, the Red Sox only have one more than the Giants.

Anyway, congratulations to Red Sox fans. This team deserved it. They were a great team, with a lot of good stories (I think people will be talking about that David Price gem to close it out for a while) and some of the best and most fun players in the game. I cannot be upset about any event that makes Mookie Betts happy.
