Default The *NEW* Bowling Thread!

This thread is to talk about bowling; ten-pin, candlepin, duckpin, five-pin, whatever you want! Anything goes!

For me personally, it's about improving my best ten-pin series for the second week in a row with a 642! Woo! Had 237 225 180, with the front six in the first game and the last six in the second game.

Post here or else it'll just be me chronicling my bowling scores, and that's boring!

Bowling is still one of my go-to first dates! But "normal" bowling, which is to say candlepin bowling, which is strange and confusing to most of you. That's... that's all I got.

I'm not very good. >_<

It might be better to be not very good for first-date purposes!

I miss bowling. Lost my team this season between my mom having knee surgery and my wife leaving me.

You've never heard of candlepin bowling? It's like duckpin, but with weirder looking pins. Biggest difference is that they clear downed pins in duckpin, but in candlepin they're left up.

Tall thin pins and much smaller bowling balls with no holes. We get 3 balls per frame to help account for the fact that it's much more difficult than your lame-o fat pin/ball bowling. It's the standard around here, and was the only thing I ever knew growing up, although these days some alleys will have one or two dedicated "big ball" lanes for novelty.

I have never seen a duck pin.

I was born in Rhode Island so duckpins are the sort of the standard for bowling for me (also the balls are small enough to fit in your hand and so aren't heavy, which is nice)

Well boo to you. It wasn't in the sports forum!

This is candlepin:

JBear says you get three balls, but apparently it doesn't count as a spare if it takes you all three, only as ten.

Yeah, a strike is 10 with one ball, and a spare is 10 with two, otherwise it's just a 10. On a strike, the first two balls of the next frame get added, and only the first gets added on a spare.

Duckpin is scored the same way. Nobody, to my knowledge, has bowled a perfect game in either; at the very least, no such game has been documented.

Tenpin is the exact same except there's no third ball at all. It's obviously much easier to get strikes, though; I had two strings of 6 in a row this week.

Except in the 10th frame, sometimes. I wonder if that was added to make the highest possible score a nice round number.

Kinect Bowling is a halfway decent substitute. You can go through the motions without actually holding a twelve pound ball, and it feels more "there" than Wii Sports Bowling does. You get an announcer and celebratory music and animations based on your performance and exciting cinematography... it does a better job of reproducing the atmosphere of bowling than the competition.

What's kind of sad is how irrelevant bowling has become to Americans since Wii Sports. I don't know what it's like in other states, but in Michigan, alleys have been closing left and right. The ones that remain are in sore need of renovation, with pin setters creaking under the weight of many years of use. The alley owners don't have the money for repairs, and it's a wonder they have the money to stay in business.

I can't find a reference, but I'm pretty sure that the extra in the tenth was added to make the maximum possible score in the frame 30, just like in the other frames.

It's coming back a little bit today, though certainly not to the levels of the 50s-80s. There's a surge in popularity in "party bowling", where you've got the whole dark alley with lights thing, plus food and drink service, often right to your lane. There have been a lot of these that have opened up in SE MI within the last ten years. A lot of standard bowling alleys have closed, true, but the ones that are still open are generally doing pretty well. There are like 8 bowling alleys within 5 miles of me, which is pretty nuts.

But... without bowling alleys, how will future generations understand The Big Lebowski?

Fell back a little in league this week. 157 222 172 for 551. Kind of got a little inconsistent with my release and wasn't striking as much as I was the last couple weeks. Still bowling well above my average, though, which is up to around 170!

Goddamn it gets me pumped to be at an inflection point like this. I'm just gonna enjoy the ride while it lasts!

166 188 192 for 546 tonight.

I feel disappionted despite being over average (average is still 175). Guess that's what I get for being over 600 for 5 out of 6 weeks a bit ago.

216 227 229 for 672 tonight! Second best ever. And our team took all 7 points to stay in the hunt for the first half in our league.
