Default For the Honor of Greyskull? Let's talk about Noelle Stevenson's She-Ra reboot!

So it looks like this is a thing that's happening. Noelle Stevenson, behind such graphic novels as Nimona (yay!) and Lumberjanes, has been signed on to do a She-Ra reboot for Dreamworks and Netflix.

Considering how Voltron has turned out so far, I'm pretty gosh darned happy about this and I really look forward to seeing it.

And who knows? Maybe a He-Man reboot will spin off from this, rather than the other way around? Wouldn't that be a hoot.

You all know how I am about these attempts to resurrect and rehabilitate 80s pop culture, so the fact that even a cumudgeon like me is thinking "tell me more..." is probably a good sign.

There isn’t a blessed thing about this announcement that isn’t making me run around in circles shouting with jubilation.

Well, except for the circumference of the room I’m in; it doesn’t really allow for much running.

Yeah, this is fantastic.

If I trusted any creator to understand the naive joy of Eternia/Etheria and to take that and turn it into something more mature, it's Noelle. Everyone else has approached He-Man with the idea of "let's take a LAME thing and turn it COOL," and it's just been stupid forgettable instead.

Even the generally well-written 2000s cartoon had a "LET'S GIVE IT MORE SPIKES AND ANGLES" feel to its art.

And of course barely any of it has featured She-Ra, so yeah, I'm super pumped. And if this means we finally get some new shine on an old toyline property, all the better.

I outright hated the redesign of the Power Sword and, er, basically everyone's armor. It was edgy in design and edgy in attitude, but without paying proper homage to either classic Conan nor to Heavy Metal, so it was just a mess of spikes.

Eww, look at that, is that a crab-shaped hit?

The original Power Sword, and its gem-studded counterpart, were elegant, streamlined, and uncomplicated designs. I loved that the crossguard looped back up to rejoin the blade, giving the swords a unique silhouette, and from tip to pommel it was all just the one piece of metal.

Yeah, much better.

Can't wait to see what Noelle does with both She-Ra's sword and the rest of the tech and craftsmanship in her world.

(And if Bow retains his little heart chestplate, I can't wait to see how everyone reacts to THAT one.)

I think the nadir of He-Man reimaginings was probably Marko Djurdevic's (CW for homophobic language and rape).

Zef - I did at least enjoy the unused origin for that power sword. The idea was that it was a mechanical surrogate that Man at Arms built after Skeletor obtained both halves of the original. So the two-part sword that Skeletor had was supposed to be the actual power sword.

But they eventually nixed that origin to go with a retelling of the original story, and kept the design anyway.

It's still an inferior design but it does explain the visual style a bit.

Anyway. Those Djurdevic designs gave me cancer.

I'm a pretty big Lumberjanes fan and having just watched ALL of She-Ra, I can say the series was a big lump of wasted potential. So, with someone with a buttload of talent, I gotta say "YAY!"

I remember reading about that in ToyFare. Skeletor's sword even kept the "merged" design, and the one that came with the figure could separate into two halves.

Of course, that was probably more due to the toy sculptors, The Four Horsemen, than the animators.

I liked the 2000s Power Sword, including how it transformed along with Adam, and opened up for slicing up titanic snake gods. On that note, I rather enjoyed He-Man's Snake Armor, too.

If there's one thing I'm iffy on the She-Ra cartoon possibly keeping, though, it's Despara.

Oh I am into all kinds of this.

Can't get a good look at the sword hilt, though the sword itself seems bulkier than her original.

Please, please let She-Ra be wearing pants and not Battle Panties under a flyaway skirt

Please

totally here for her determined jaw and Eyebrows of Valor however

I feel 100% certain that you have nothing to worry about in this regard. Even if that picture didn't make it clear.

the picture did not make it clear

the picture is what provoked my plea because... high crotch emphasis

I mean I would expect Good Things from Noelle Stevenson's character design but what if she decided she needed to Reclaim Battle Panties

what if that happened, Octo?!

If anyone could redeem battle panties, it's Noelle.

That said, I'm gonna have to agree with Octo here.

Was... was the original She-Ra equipped with Battle Panties? Admittedly I was very young when I last watched the show, but wasn't she wearing a pretty reasonable skirt? (Reasonable, at least, compared to the Sailor Scouts.) And considering the (ahem) high crotch emphasis in the sketch would have her either naked or wearing pants, I think Noelle went with "wearing pants" here

Mildly let down by the generic sword design for the Gem Sword, but I guess I tend to get hung up on specific aesthetics that have no real impact on the narrative. Just sad that Noelle chose not to use that one-of-a-kind design. I DO appreciate how Flash Gordonian/Asgardian her outfit is, and can't wait to see it in color!

Iirc; in the 2002 series FISTO got his name because of his one single, very large hand.

Then, later, he lost that arm and had it replaced by an even larger metal fist.

That’s how you embrace FISTO.

Exactly.

You do not be embarrassed by a name like FISTO, you double down on it.

If there was a third season I’m sure he would have lost the robot arm and gotten a third, even bigger still fist to replace it. Maybe he would have lost a foot and had his original, still very big, fist as a replacement for that.

It might just be unclear from this vantage point.
