I don't know about the biased luck but they definitely are building teams that are out to get you, specifically, in that you could take literally the exact same team and probably never get half as far as they do because they're otherwise not particularly competitive.

There's never been any evidence that they fudge the RNG, but they do stack effects like Bright Powder that make normally sure things chancy. Over a long enough time span, those chances will screw you. Or if not that, then the chance of running into a team that exactly does something you need luck to overcome.

The problem is that it rewards you for long streaks, so you need a very conservative team that can avoid bullshit failures, instead of a competitive team that wins a lot.

So this gal needs a name.

I'm trying to figure out how I want it built. I think I have an idea, but one thing at a time.

Sadly I do not (you can't breed Ditto for shiny).

also re: Battle Tree cheating I just saw that Dragonite use a motherfucking Custap Berry, which are banned in Gen VII because Game Freak wanted to nerf my Foretress apparently.

I also got a F.E.A.R. Sceptile (TL;DR: Sceptile with a Focus Sash, Endeavor, and Quick Attack; the cheapest of KOs).

Despite the fact that the card says the expiration was a couple weeks ago, I was still able to redeem my code of a, uh, "timely" dialga. Sure.

To my fellow veterans:

I have taken a hiatus the last few years, and turn to you for a request and some informed advice. I am in the aquaintence of a young trainer seeking a shiny male Eevee (or any of it's evolutions). Of this, I have no doubt someone here can provide.

But as I have been lapsed, I have a few questions about how to proceed. I have not played any game in a significant way since Pokemon Y. My son has Pokemon Sun, but is not very far in. I also have access to Pokemon Bank. What is the best way to proceed?

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are similar enough to Sun and Moon that it probably isn't worth playing both.

So, if you want a shiny Eevee, and you don't want a perfectly legitimate one that fell off the back of a truck, there are three ways to do it.

First option: breeding. This is the most mindless option. First, get the Shiny Charm by completing the Alola pokedex, which increases the probability of any pokemon being shiny. Get either a Ditto or an Eevee that is from a different real-world country (i.e. from Japan or France or something - it'll be indicated on its stat screen). Breeding pokemon from different regions further increases the probability of a hatched pokemon being shiny, which is called the Masuda Method. Those effects stack, giving you effectively a 1 in 512 chance. Then hatch a bunch of eggs. There are various techniques you can use to make this process go faster, but nothing to increase the odds further.

You can get better odds by using something called SOS chaining, but it's a bit more involved. SOS battles are a new feature introduced in gen 7, and combined with the Shiny Charm you can get odds up to a bit less than 1 in 256. An SOS chain is where a wild pokemon repeatedly calls for backup. Reinforcements after the 31st one in a single encounter have a higher chance of being shiny. Get in a battle with a wild Eevee and kick off an SOS chain by using an Adrenaline Orb, reducing its HP, and knocking out its replacements one by one. Get yourself a large amount of Leppa Berries before attempting this - you'll need them. This may go faster than breeding, but be warned that it is more difficult.

The third option is to get one of the gen 2 games on Virtual Console and exploit a particular quirk of the breeding system in that game. Of the three options, this is the slowest and gives you the worst odds, but once you get it up and running, you can get shinies of most everything that can be bred in generation 2. Specifically, if you breed a shiny pokemon, its offspring of the opposite sex have a 1/64 chance of being shiny, so you can start with the guaranteed shiny - the Gyarados from the Lake of Rage - and breed the shininess gene into all the other egg groups. The shininess will persist when you transfer it forward through Pokemon Bank.

But really, you're better off trading with somebody who's already done all this legwork.

Does Castform really have the clout it once had? In the early days of S/M I bred a whole box of one and just grabbed everything I thought would be even remotely interesting to have.

I've actually got one of everything through Gen VI, just trying to grab the various forms of Cosmog/Cosmoem etc. Thanks though!

Americans can get Zeraora from Gamestop and Reshiram or Zekrom from Target starting today. I don't know which stores are the ones you need to get somebody else to visit for you in other countries.

The battle period for the Ultra Spooky Cup is now open, so if you signed up, don't forget to get your three complete battles in. You don't even have to win any of 'em.
