I'm possibly going to be busy tomorrow evening (meeting up with other friends for D&D with them, so you know, don't feel too bad for me), though I'm open Friday if you run a second day.

Then me and Mag shot the snail a bunch of times and it died. It was delicious and the shell is very shiny. And very heavy. Heavier than one mule could carry that Echo was smart and brought with.

So we camped out and shot at more mushrooms that did not boom while Echo went back and got another mule and a wagon and some rope and we got the shell into the wagon and brought it back and now we have our own shiny shiny thing I love it

On the way back Mag fed a dog and it vanished because dogs do that sometimes I guess

From the Journal of Echo [with marginalia]:

Success! The Shell is ours! [sketch of a snail shell with sunbeams and stars around it]

I write this as Bell polishes our treasure out in the town square. The Flail Snail Exoskeleton catches the daylight very beautifully out here, and I must say I find it very difficult to write, but I have to get this down in case I ever forget. If you are me, years from now, close your eyes and remember.

This. Is. Joy.

We departed a day after heavy rain - Bell, Mag and myself [drawing of three crows]. Since it was on the way, I asked Mag to lead us back to what I have labeled the Floating Stump on my map. He found it again easy enough, and we negotiated with a large host of spiders that had taken up residence therein [sketch of a prone spider with "ZZZZZZzzzzzz...." over it]. We were fortunate to harvest not one, but two of the mushrooms, which I collected and jarred. Tomorrow I will attempt to determine if they might be preserved, powdered, or made into potion form [small alchemical equation with a big question mark].

We located the cave, and I set to work. I excavated a large pit outside, which would allow us to leverage our speed and ranged weaponry against this beast. Bell and Mag cleared the cave of a straggling Vine-Whip creature [squiggle], and I prepared to lure the Snail outside while the others went to take up position at the pit.

Then the Beholder came [one large circle, several smaller ones hovering over it].

I had read of these creatures. Huge, disembodied heads with extra eyes on stalks, like a lobster. Fantastically dangerous. Powerful magic. Mag spotted it first, and was able to warn me before I drew out the snail and doomed us all - his quick action saved our lives. With Cricket as a lookout, we zigged when it zagged, using the cave's geometry to elude the Beholder. We had to engage the snail as we went, but Bell managed to hold it off single-handedly while Mag and I got past and got distance [sketch of Bell in a Superman pose, with sunrays and stars around him].

We escaped the cave and pondered our options. We were still debating when we heard and felt a powerful blast from back inside the cave. I sent Cricket to investigate, and discovered the Snail had smote the Beholder, popping him like an inflated bladder!

We continued as before, and our preparations were rewarded. The beast died peppered with arrows and bolts, and we ate a delicious meal over a friendly campfire.

Within the cave I examined the deflated hide of the beholder, and discovered that its "Eyestalks" were merely capped fungi of some unknown species. It's flesh was plant-like as well, as if some fungal growth had ballooned into a sphere and set out to wander the world. I do not think these Beholders are as dangerous as they are cracked up to be... perhaps they are uniquely vulnerable to the slams of the Flail Snail. [Poet Magus says NOT A BEHOLDER]

We found a sort of glassy residue in its hovel, and harvested as much as we could find, thinking it might be valuable. But the true prize was this magnificent shell.

Magnificent, and Massive. My mule could not pull the weight of the thing. We could not budge it from where it lie. The others sent me to town to acquire a cart and a second mule, as well as some engineering supplies. Thus armed, we managed to drop the thing into our new cart, where it still sits. Then began a long, slow trip home.

A final note: we met a wild canine on the way back to the outpost. Mag tried to befriend it. I do not know if he succeeded, for the dog vanished before our eyes! Some kind of fairy, I think.

Great write-ups, inspiration for both of you!

XP:
Day 11
Date: 12-07-17
Hexes: 1,0 / 2,1
Explorers: Echo, Mag, Bell
Discoveries:
Treasure: Flail Snail shell (5,000), glass-like material (300)
Monsters: 10 spiders (100), Violet Fungus (50), Gas Spore (100), Flail Snail (700)
/ 3 = 2,083 each

I have friends & family in town, so I'm not sure when I'm free next. I may have a day next week, and if so I'll post in here. Otherwise, I'll make time the week after for sure.

e- Also, I'm going to throw all of the XP records into the first post, in case anyone needs to look anything up.

e2- I also took out character levels, because I realized that's way too much busywork. The XP is all right there if you need to check.

Sheesh. That experience total is approximately 85% of the total experience that Bell had accrued in all other adventures.

Can I swap out my share of the treasure from the Flail Snail shell and have it crafted into one o them neat Anti-Magic shields? I'm taking Crossbow Expert as my level 4 feat -- I KNOW BIG SURPRISE -- so I'm switching from Heavy Crossbow to Hand Crossbow + Shield, and if it's a lovely pearly shiny shield, all the better.
An off-the-shelf shield is 10 gp, so let me know how much dosh it'll take to commission. (If all three of us get shields crafted, is there any benefit to Flail Snail Economies-of-Scale?)

Either way Bell will keep a little fragment of the shell as a keepsake, maybe carve it into a pendant or something.

In order to craft a magic item, you need to meet the level requirement (level 11 for very-rare), and then invest a certain amount of money and time to make it. Finding a smith who is also a level 11 magic user, and who has the time to craft an item that powerful would be extremely difficult, even if you have some of the ingredients.

Hey, you still get a ton of cash & experience.

e- also, I hope no one is too worried about missing out! Experience will be easier to come by as the group as a whole levels up, and it will be pretty quick for lower leveled adventurers to catch up.

Fair enough. That is a ton of gold, I could afford a suit of full plate if I wanted it. (I'm not particularly interested in super-heavy armor that isn't mithril, so eh.)

In fact... there's not much in the way of mundane equipment I particularly want, out of the book. Replacing my net is only a gold piece. What are our options for investing in infrastructure? With that kind of money the three of us can probably afford to teleport in some masons and carpenters and get some proper homes built so we're not bunking in barracks. Or construct a road out to one of those towers and fix it up to roost there instead.

If it helps, I have 1, 2, 3...45 days of downtime that I can use to contribute to building the tower base, using druid magic to help clear the area, get stone for materials, and whatnot.

So Patrick, what's the deal with the mushrooms? Do they retain their magic at all? Can they be dried or powdered or otherwise preserved?

Edit: I'm pretty good at digging! If we're building stuff.

Yeah, Mister An-Hour's-Work-With-A-Shovel-Replaced-By-A-Cantrip there is an invaluable resource for basements and roads, I think.

Bell's fighter with a splash of rogue build isn't particularly well-suited to the tasks in mind, but she's spent a childhood peeking through the windows of lavishly-decorated homes and seething with envy, so she has some very lofty ideas of what her living space should look like.

And, I mean, we're all kenku. Show us how to build a thing once and we can crank out as many exact duplicates as we want.

I知 totally down with you all building a base! I値l take a look in the DMG and try to see if there are any other good rules out there, or just make up some stuff if it comes to that.

Unfortunately, the mushrooms only last until sundown before losing their power. I found them in an old hex crawl.

If you want to save yourself some work, go steal stuff from https://www.reddit.com/r/West_Marches/. Mind you that's a much larger playerbase with multiple DM's, but it's a place to start.

I forgot how big the jump of experience to hit level 5 was over the level 4 requirement. All that experience and I still didn't level up! :O

Don't worry mate, level 5 is WAY longer. I have to double my total XP now!

I think we should all follow Bell and take a small chunk as a souvenir. I think Echo will do it up like an amulet. It'll mark us as the OG Crows :-D
