No. 50. Beanie Babies
Ty Inc.
Points 49 | Lists 2 | Highest Ranked: Gerad #5
I’m retired.

If you grew up in the mid-1990s, Ty Beanie Babies were unavoidable. It seems almost unfathomable that a series of simple, understuffed bean-bag animals could become such an enormous sensation without the aid of any sort of media tie-in or corporate hype train – and in the days where the Internet was still an infant - but that’s exactly what happened. All Ty did was make some cute animal toys and then make them scarce.

And it wasn’t just the scarcity that attracted obsessives – it was minutiae like minor changes in designs of a beanie that would send their market value through the roof. Insignificant things like the misplacement of a copyright sign on the tag (and I hope you didn’t cut off the tag, or you can forget about ROI) would trigger price hikes. Witness this poor Inky, imprisoned in a vacuum-sealed container for the rest of his miserable life, because he had the misfortune to ship with some blemish or other:

Surprisingly, despite Beanie’s meteoric rise and fall, some of the damn things are still worth a lot of money. Nothing really encapsulates the fad more than Princess Bear:

She was created as an homage to the August 1997 death of Princess Diana, which means this is about the most 1990s collectible you can find that doesn’t involve Spice Girls or Bill Clinton. Oh, and it still can command absurd prices.

Quote:
The most rare of these is a Princess bear known as a “ghost version”, selling for $507,000. It was manufactured in Indonesia using PVC pellets, and has a space on the swing tag.
My brother and I had a large collection of stuffed critters, which meant Beanies very much had a place in our world. But oddly enough we found more to love about Beanie Boppers, which were another company’s spin on Ty’s animal empire. I’m pretty sure they were exclusive to Wal-Mart, but they’re so obscure that I can’t even verify their name on Google.

We knew they were doomed to be forgotten by nearly everyone, but we loved them all the same.

(Also we had Sly the Fox with the brown belly, so suck it.)

I will NEVER understand how the Beanie Baby craze even got started. Speculation/Rarity based on defects is one thing --a dumb thing, but at least it has precedent-- but how and why did BBs ever become a prized collectible?

That's one from my list!

The craziest was the McDonalds beanie babies. People would go to McDonalds and just buy happy meals on repeat until they were out of beanie babies, then just throw out all the food. Absolutely an insane phenomenon.

The only toy from your picture that I had was the Big Mac dinosaur transformer. Man I loved those things.

Wait. Is this one so crazy expensive because of an extra SPACE?

Challenge: Identify as many objects as you can from the first photo in the thread.

The prize is 1,000 Dracula points, which can be redeemed at your nearest haunted castle.

I recognized the BigMac Transformer and Starscreams Crown, and there's a bunch that are just on the tip of my tongue but I can't think of what they're from

They weren't on my list, but I have a few Beanie Babies. The one that's gotten the most use is a shiny white/pearl jellyfish that I used with an Aleksis Kaidonovsky costume as part of a Pacific Rim fandom in-joke.

That's not necessarily a dinosaur - the dinos were a later variant, the original set was funky robots:

(from my own retro closet blog)

As for the top image, the one thing I recognize that hasn't been mentioned is the rubber 4-eyed alien/monster finger topper critter, though I don't remember the actual name of the toy line; I had several of those, but not the one pictured.

I cut all the tags off mine immediately.

Also, this thread is great. Possibly the greatest.

I just want to state how disappointed I am that Beanie Babies don't actually wear beanie hats.

Is Dr. spacehead a real toy or your own creation?

If it IS a real toy, WHY?

I was the 2nd vote for Beanie Babies. Both my sisters and my wife had, until very recently, trash bags full of these things. I remember hanging out with my wife (then girlfriend) in her room somtimes and the rainbow edged white mesh hammock in the corner of her room just stuffed to the ceiling with those silly things. She was told in high school that those things were her college savings plan (hence the additional note on my list). We've still got a while before the student loans are paid off...

There's an old abandoned house in my hometown that is known as "the beanie baby house" because a crazy collector bought and sold them out of her living room there for years.

I wouldn't say I loved them as a kid, but as someone who grew up in the 90's, they got a spot on my list.

Edit: I laughed out loud at work when the beanie dropped in a smoshed everyone.

1. APPARENTLY. And the fact that its beads are made of a different material? PEOPLE ARE INSANE.

2. I just did some ebay searching, and it looks like the brown-belly Sly goes for something like 40 to 50 bucks. And we cut the tag off of ours, so he's probably safe from being discovered and then sealed into an airtight cylinder.

Dr. Space-Head is from the famous 1990s toyline Monster Mads, which featured a line of various mad scientists and laboratory playsets with different action features.

...or am I lying?

Dr. Spacehead is the very clever leader of the Monster B.A.D.S, the villainous faction of the line. His role was to create evil monsters for the heroic Monster Mads to fight. Like Finster, or Dr. Wily

According to the filecards he was secretly, he was the brother of the Monster Mads' leader Flintbolt, but neither of them realized it.

Not every Skeleton is BEAT.

However, every skeleton answers to BEAT.

You see a Koopa Troopa, you assume Bowser is involved.

You see a Met, you assume Dr. Wily is involved.

Agree. I love these non-videogame ones. The videogame ones tend to be FFIX IS STUPID AND SLOW FFIX IS GREAT AND CHARMING, while these are just a steady stream of fun knowledge about stuff I don't know that well. Mogri's snack list was great, too.

Possibly better. Although one of the great things about thes lists is that each one is completely different and there is no set format other than "list the things". They've all been great so far.

Except for that garbage 21st Century Games thread. Whoever ran that one should be permabanned.
