Default MONSTRESS: War, Magic, and Darkness in fantasy Art Deco Steampunk Asia

you guys, the first trade paperback of Monstress came out, and you have to read this comic

because oh my god this art

it's also an uncompromisingly feminist and unflinching look at war, racism, slavery, and exploitation. There's some really interesting worldbuilding, too.

I need to be able to talk about this with people. get this comic

Sana Takeda has been an excellently-kept secret for like a decade now, mainly on account of her pre-Monstress American career being like 90% in-one-eye-out-the-other B-tier work-for-hire at Marvel. Among other things, she's responsible for the infamous tentacle cover of... was it Heroes for Hire or Daughters of the Dragon?

she and Marjorie Liu met there; among other things, they worked together on X-23.

but suffice it to say that Monstress is putting them on the map in a whole new way

Hey, Comixology has issues for this on sale for $1 each right now. Well, except for the first issue is $2, but still, good deal!

the first issue is sixty-six pages so I understand why it's a slightly higher prices.

I just devoured the second TPB of this. So good. We get more answers, and then more questions. Liu is pacing this perfectly.

Just read the first volume, now working on the second. I don't read a lot of comics but I've been enjoying this one just fine, even if it is a little graphic. I enjoy that the world building seems to come together well enough, even if on the first pass you're not entirely sure who is which character...

Marjorie Liu won an Eisner for best writer for this book this year. First woman to do so!

Sana Takada won for art, also for this book!

Default the library advocate has logged on

FYI, if your library provides access to the Hoopla digital lending service, you can read the first two collections (#1-12) there for free.

(And if you read digital comics at all, you should seriously check to see if your library uses Hoopla. Even if your local library doesn't have this, know that a lot of library systems in major cities in the US provide cards to residents of the state, not just city/county residents. Those bigger library systems probably do use Hoopla.)
