It's that time of year I think. Brown leaves, brown liquors.

In the last little bit I find my thoughts turning ever more toward aged rums.

Friends dragged me there and a few other breweries for a tour. Stone itself was a pretty nice place to visit. I don't remember some of the other ones by the end tho...

Last night, since it was my birthday, my friends and I went to a nerd bar and I tried a glass of "Klingon Blood Wine" (a cocktail with spiced rum, cranberry juice, tabasco sauce, and other ingredients). It was pretty spicy. I suppose my only issue with it would be the presentation. They served it in a normal wine glass when it should have been in a metal tankard.

Open bar last night, so I said a goodbye of sorts by diminishing our nation's strategic blanco tequila reserves.

It is time for rum and whiskey, yes

But if that's what fall is, then fall never ends. You can call me Mr. Autumn Man because ne'er will I befoul these lips with the clear liquors of summer, transparent to tongue and eye alike

I did a favor for my cousin-in-law (video aid on a business presentation) and he bought me a bottle of Suntory Hibiki Master's Select as a thank-you. It's even better than the standard Hibiki.

Who the hell considers Rittenhouse "bottom shelf"? Bottom shelf is 1.5L/$8 turpentine-grade trash. Rittenhouse is affordably priced, but it's hardly priced as bottom shelf fare. Sheesh. This list is worse than that awful Mario rankings article Polygon just posted.

I just googled that and looked over it. Polygon obviously needs to find someone that actually knows about Mario.

It was a good list with some great surprises.

Trying to piss off every platformer fan ever, Parish? Can't wait to read your scathing take on the new Bubsy. NSMBU is a gutsy choice to be sure. I mean, if you're including Luigi U, I can definitely see it, but man. That is a gutsy choice. Not convinced I'd put it over World...

Lmao Rittenhouse drinks better than most would-be whiskey nerds can taste.

It's called for by name in several of the high-end cocktail recipe books I own! That is a bad list by a bad person.

Also, if you'd read the Polygon article you'd see I specifically cited the fact the NSLBU is bundle as a part of the NSMBU package now as a point in favor of the game! For shame.

So. I'm nearly done imbibing my Woodford double oaked. What a year of manhattans it has been.

Anyone have any other bourbon recommendations?

Knob Creek. Less buttery smooth but more of a flavor rush. Single Barrel tastes like straight up vanilla ice cream on the first sip, but it's 60% and you should not be having too many more sips after that.

Booker's is what you go for if you want to know you're drinking overproof bourbon, while Knob Creek is what you drink if you want to surprise yourself.

Also, I dunno where you are, but on the west coast you can find a Washington brand called Dry Fly that does some interesting variations.

Canadia - alberta. Not super difficult to get like top names, a few shops will offer smaller batch rarities from around the world. One place carries numerous Mezcals and Baijius, which is not at all common here.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep em coming if you have any more thoughts.

Side thought:
I have a really nice local vodka, but I'm must admit, vodka seems rather one note. Is there anything more to vodka aside from a fairly flavourless liquor?

All the drinking traditions surrounding vodka were invented because of shitty potato squeezins juice that off-gassed like curing asphalt. Modern stuff does what it does - put booze in you without wrecking your palate.

Old Grand-Dad 114 will, like Raider said about Booker's, make you very aware you are drinking the hard stuff. Priced to sell and very good once you understand where it's coming from.

My mom has two rules about Vodka. It must be potato based and it must be Polish.
Her favorite is Luksusowa.

Yeah, Luksusowa was my go-to back when I could reliably get it around here. The more you spend on vodka, the more you're just paying for product placement in rap videos and suchlike.

There are less filtered vodkas that have more flavor but they are harder to find and often pricey.

It's taken me a while to form this opinion but I think Wild Turkey 101 isn't very good. Even for the price.
