We got to play some D&D on Tuesday, but the party did not make it as far as the dragon. They actually spent at least half of the session arguing over whether to let a thief out of the cell he was trapped in. The halfling who was funding the mission didn't trust him because he was clearly there to steal the treasure the halflings are trying to recover, the dragon researcher wanted to get information out of him about the dragon's lair, the cleric hates thieves and wanted to leave him, the Rogue had a secret side conversation using thieves' cant and was also considering turning him in back in town for a reward, and the druid finally ended up using charm person to get him to reveal a whole bunch about what he's been up to in the ruined town and about his criminal organization. That worked out better than I had expected, it was a solid hour of great roll playing.

Otherwise they ambushed some kobolds, snuck around town, and took out some guards in the Kobold lair/crystal cave that the blue dragon had carved out of sand. Then, they fought a Flameskull, which led to my favorite thing in the session. The Rogue threw a bag of sand at the Flameskull and missed. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but afterward he refilled the bag and he mentioned that there were pieces of skull mixed in with the sand. He doesn't know that Flameskulls come back to life after one hour. So, while they're resting up after the dragon encounter, I'm going to be able to light his backpack on fire and have chips of skull fly off to meet up with the rest of the skull. I had previously pictured green flames showing up around a corner right before it returned, but this is way better.

Anyway, the cleric player is finishing up a longer adventure that he's writing, so I'm going to be able to play as a character again soon. Also, I'm still working on the West Marches stuff. I decided to start over with the map because the first one I had made was too compact. I'm writing hex keys now and I'm aiming to have everything for level 1-5 finished before starting the game. So probably a few more weeks, but I'm making progress.

Ok I need a group brainstorm here. My party is in a losing fight outside a giant spider temple, against 3 huge demons conducting a ritual and their cronies. The ritual involves a cauldron full of magic items that they break to cast spells, held aloft by 2 of the demons. Their allies are drow-spider hybrids who cast some spells. The giant spider temple is waking up/turning into a real spider and probably going to eat us. We have 2 griffons on our side for possible airlift.

I need help because I have a Ring of the Grammarian that lets me add/remove/change one letter from a spell I cast. I get to state my desired effect and the DM determines how it works. Everyone else is pretty much tapped out so here's my spell list, hit me with your brightest ideas (DM said I could crowdsource my spells for this since it's dire)

Dancing Lights
Fire Bolt
Gust
Message
Thunderclap
Vicious Mockery
Mending
Charm Person
Dissonant Whispers
Catapult
Feather Fall
Healing Word
Tasha's Hideous Laughter
Heat Metal
Shatter
Warding Wind
Create Food and Water
Fear
Leomund's Tiny Hut
Haste
Sending
Dimension Door

In the past I've used Bear (Fear) to summon a kodiak, Lending(Sending) to give someone a weapon at a distance, Feather Call(Feather Fall) to summon the Griffons, and Thunderclam to make a big clam that didn't do much. So far my plan is cast Dimension Doom and end as much of reality as I can when we die.

That is an amazing toy. Best bet is Dancing Fights so that you can challenge them to a dance-off.

Feather Wall could have possibilities, as could Feat. If your DM is feeling generous, Wording Wind could open up entirely new possibilities. If not, there's always Warring Wind and Dire Bolt. Who even knows what Chasm Person, Dancing Wights, Hear Metal, or Vending could do for you? Just don't cast Shatner.

Removing letters: Try Feather All, Harm Person, or especially Ending. Warding Win could be good, too. If you need to buy some time, then Far is a good spell, and if you want a larger hut, then Leomund's Tin Hut is just right for you. Finally, if there happens to be a very important NPC in your campaign by the name of Gus, then you're in luck.

Adding letters: Simply pluralizing any spell at least doubles your mileage. You might not get much mileage out of making the demons Chaste, but Tasha's Hideous Slaughter sounds like a good time. Style points for Healing Sword.

Finally, make sure you keep Heal Metal in your quiver for any constructs you may befriend in the future.

Wow yea some of those are on my list but Sealing Word, Ending, and Tasha's Hideous Slaughter are all great. I'm not sure DM will let me win the combat with a Grammarian spell but escape or delay is surely possible.

Dancing Fights I might have to run by the party, not sure we have any dancers outside of my PC.

My girlfriend just recommended Fire Boat, Dimension Donor, and Leomunds Tiny Out but I have no idea what the pitch to the DM is for those effects.

Maybe the demons just needed a little love. Try Leomund's Tiny Hug.

That archane Archer build looks like fun, but I have to second whoever mentioned an archery rogue. That shit is super fun, especially when you have a clue aggressive melee teammates to let you stack sneak attack from a distance.

Dissonant Whiskers summons a cat in heat. These are very narrow use cases but you never know

Fire Holt may let you scrounge up some fire animental otters.

If the cauldron isn't brittle enough for Shatter perhaps Rust. Dimension Floor may also suffice to bring it down to where you can deal with it in a more conventional way, or Feather Fail for that matter.

Healing World may be your best recovery spell (pitch: the same effect as a Rod of Security).

Rending, Harm Person and Dancing Blights are decent for offense.

If you make it out of this alive be sure to celebrate with a round on Create Food and Waiter.

Scatter might be able to disperse the ritualists and buy you some time.

I'm not sure it would do much in this situation, but I'm sure somewhere down the line you could find a use for a Waste spell.

Alright I've assembled quite the list, gonna consult the group and we play next Thursday. Will update with results, possibly asking for new character ideas if we all die.

Don't forget Ratapult for long-distance vermin delivery and Paste when you need to slow things down.

Can't be arsed to exhaustively check if any of these are doubles of what's already been suggested, but I did a single run through the whole list:

Dancing Blights
Ire Bolt
Guest
Messaged (Send a message back into the past!)
Thunderclad (That armour is electric)
Vicious Cockery ()
Ending (We're done here)
Char Person (Ow! That stings!)
Dissonant Wispers
Catapults (Why one when many will do?)
Feather Fail
Dealing Word
Heat Meal (Practical!)
Shitter (Also practical!)
Warding Hind (Butt out)
Created Food and Water (This meal was here the whole time)
Gear (Turns out I had that 10-ft rope with me after all)
Leomund's Tiny Hutt (He may be small, but his criminal empire is vast)
Hasta
Spending ($$$)
Dimension Dour (Quick trip to Mount Celestia)
