Gosh DANG this Hilda show took a turn. In an effort to help her mother and a friend who are both down on their luck, Hilda inadvertently curses them both with a soul claiming enchantment spell/cyptid which turns them into drooling husks of their former selves, which they will stay as unless the enchantment is broken before the trial period is finished.

I think the Over the Garden Wall guy was directing at least the first episode of that, last I saw. Good fit.

Wakfu is a gorgeously animated cartoon from Brazil and it’s all on Netflix.

And whoever is responsible for the English dub needs to go to jail for ear-crimes.

I thought so too, but the first choice for the language and subtitle options were Brazilian/Portuguese, and French wasn’t even presented as an option.

My other point re: Ear Crime remains.

I watched Wakfu when it was still running, and I'm glad I held onto my fansubs because hoo boy that English audio.

It's really good though! I dropped off partway through the second season but it's got a lot going for it and Masaaki Yuasa worked on the villain backstory episode near the end of the first season.

Stephen Hillenburg died.

I realize most of TT is too old to have grown up with Spongebob like I did, but damn.

I watched it early on in the series and that's when it was really good. That's a damned shame, he created one of the truly timeless cartoon characters (I've taught English in Japan, Korea and China and he was very popular all over. Also, none of them knew he had a last name).

Hillenburg was the lifeblood of SpongeBob. Without him, the show lost its footing and its direction, to the point where they had David Bowie as a guest and didn't know what to do with him. He recently came back to bring the show out of its post-movie doldrums... now that he's gone, it'll never get a chance to recover.

Very sad. Hillenburg was still young. Not like, "maybe create a second timeless property" young, but still younger than my parents by a good measure. Its a shame.

Really used to love that show.

It's like the best animation that Canada circa 2004 had to offer.

Remember when Genndy Tartakovsky was making a new Popeye movie and it looked all awesome and stuff? Those were good days.

Classic cartoon characters redesigned to wear jeans and polo shirts makes me deeply uncomfortable every time.

Also, the idea that Popeye grows and cans spinach himself, and that he's the only one who has access to it and refuses to share it is such a weird logical leap to take with the character.

I remember Billy West describing all the effort he put into recreating the vocal technique employed by Jack Mercer and other former Popeye actors going back to the thirties, he basically had to learn throat-singing in order to modulate his voice in that uniquely strange way.

And that wasn't even a particularly great film, but West put the work in because he respected the character and the history of the medium and wanted to do a good job.

The guy they've got for this just sounds like he's doing a bad Jerry Lewis impersonation.

I mean, let's not mince words. This is fucking trash. You know those VHS tapes you used to get of public domain cartoons, which would usually have a very poorly drawn, off-model versions of the featured characters on the cover? This looks like an animated version of one of those covers.

The most recent What a Cartoon really made me want to revisit Aqua Teen Hunger Force (at least the first couple of seasons), but I got rid of those DVDs in one purge or another, and they’ve apparently gone way Up in price on Amazon, and they’re not streaming anywhere I can watch them up here in Canadaland.

Awww

I don't think it's AS bad as everyone else is saying, but yeah, it ain't great. They designed everyone to look super friendly and marketable and inoffensive... Popeye has a whistle instead of a pipe! All the characters have shiny pupils! Proportions have changed so Olive Oyl's not so gangly anymore! Thing is, these characters aren't supposed to look like you just tore the shrinkwrap off them. They're kind of homely and misshapen and weatherworn, which is part of the humor. They look ugly in a different way here, but not in the way Segar intended.

But yeah, I'm not impressed. Popeye's had bad cartoons in the past and he'll most likely survive this one, but this gives me the impression that it's an IP placeholder... just something to remind the world that Popeye exists and that he's still owned by some all-consuming corporate entity. He's got to be edging a hundred at this point and I'm not entirely sure why has hasn't gone into the public domain, but it is what it is.

I am not even surprised anymore when there's a crappy new modern adaptation of beloved old cartoon series.

Oh well, this unfortunate news did get me to watch Popeye Meets Sinbad the Sailor again. Some things obviously have not aged well* but the animation and Sinbad's villain song number are still a treat.

* By which of course I mean the whole 'classic' Popeye story angle of Olive Oyl being nothing more than a trophy for two angry brutish men to beat each other half to near death over. The ol' misogynistic "Save the princess, slay the dragon" trope in full effect.

And, Honestly, compared to many cartoons from that era... that’s a pretty light complaint.

Popeye's a bit of a weird one where the character himself is public domain outside of the US, but the media based on Popeye varies in copyright status. Some of it's public domain and some of it isn't.

I'd hazard a guess that this is just someone poking the audience to see if they're still interested in Popeye. He'll become public domain in the US in 2025 and I imagine it would be expensive to fight for the rights to keep him, possibly not worth doing.
