Diablo could be coming to Netflix.

I am having a very hard time imagining that as something at all watchable.

Unless things were changed in a reprint, the Lord of the Rings extended editions were double discs, not two-sided discs.

There were some cheap reprints that included just the movies, no special features, on double sided discs. Or at least Fellowship is on a double sided disc; I'm not sure I ever watched the other two.

If so that means that I need to be the disc in the player with that side facing down. But wait! The label is actually on the side opposite of what it describes. That way you can read the label as you put the disc in and have it correspond to the version of the film that you want to watch. But oh no! I got it backwards. Again. And now I spend what feels like twenty minutes just trying to figure out how on earth to watch the right version of the movie.

I still think the unskippable six minute preview is worse.
I discovered a work around to the unskippable six-minute preview. Put disc 2 into the player, select an episode that is on disc 1 and when prompted to insert the correct disc it will now skip the interminable preview. It's a tedious workaround but much less tedious than sitting through all the previews each time.

Anyhow, Stranger Things is still pretty great. I guess they didn't manage to work at the breakneck speed necessary to get season 3 out in time for this Halloween? Or at least I haven't heard anything about the next season coming out soon.

I watched the first 2 episodes of Maniac and I am highly impressed. I'll write up more tomorrow, but it is compelling character-driven sci-fi.

Okay, so, Maniac is a Netflix original based on a Norwegian mini-series. The biggest reason I love it so much is its similarities to Philip K. Dick stories, who is easily my favorite sci-fi author. Even beyond the superficial story similiarities (it sort of has a similar premise to Total Recall but not quite), it shares a lot of his offbeat tone, his fascination with drug addiction and mental health, and it is first and foremost a character-driven story. And you know its got literary chops because it references Don Quixote in a serious way multiple times.

The two main characters are a drug addict and a schizophrenic, who sign up for a medical trial of a new drug so they can get paid. It's also pretty much a dystopia and its concept of the AdBuddy is some serious grade-A satire imo. It's the kind of story where everyone has some shit going on behind the scenes, so even the scientists running the trial aren't trustworthy, nor is the A.I. that's designed to be a part of the medical trial. Basically I'm loving it a lot and the cast is great and I'm glad it's a miniseries so it can just be a one-and-done thing. Each episode isn't even the same length! Some are 30 minutes, some are 45! Madness.

I've watched the first four episodes and I agree.

edit: I started episode 5 and laughed out loud at the line "I think our computer might be horribly depressed." It isn't a joke, but it caught me off guard. This show is wild.

The show appears to be based on the 2014 comic of the same name, yes.

Edgy Sabrina was also the OG version, tbh. The old TV show was a greatly family friendly version of the original comics, which were sort of in the Goosebumps mold of mild horror stories for kids.

Maniac was fine. Made me cry. (not hard!)

Elite was so fun for like four episodes but I kind of loved everyone too much at that point and just felt bad for them. Wanted things to spin back in to control, you know? Was kind of hoping for some narratively dishonest reveal that there was no murder. You got me, Elite! But there was. Anyway, now I just want the survivors to get away with all their crimes.

I was hoping Creeped Out would be a successor to Are You Afraid of the Dark or R L Stine's The Haunting Hour, but so far it's basically sub-Goosebumps tier, because as unwatchable as Goosebumps is, at least it would pull out completely ridiculous, nonsensical twists in the last two minutes of an episode.

Edit: I made this post after the first episode and halfway through the second, but as it turns out it does sort of pick up. But boy howdy that first episode is garbage.

If all these people in The Haunting of Hill House would just sleep in dark rooms (as opposed to: gorgeously lit ones) and wear sleep masks I swear the ghosts would stop fucking with them.

Halfway through. It’s sometimes moving and scary and I love the cast. However, I’ve had lots of scary, cusp-of-sleep hallucinations and, like, they’re not ghosts, but many people I meet ask: are they ghosts? Are you sure they’re not ghosts? In this show, they’re definitely ghosts and I wish I weren’t annoyed by that.

Netflix just released a collection of short (REALLY SHORT) horror films called "Don't Watch This". Don't know if it's good but the entire season is less than a half hour, so that's good for people who want to celebrate Halloween in a short amount of time.

EDIT: It's pretty bad. Don't bother.
