At the City in the Sky. You know, it's odd how my favorite tracks in 3D Zeldas

are all

the weird

dungeon tracks.

Can't help but be reminded of the Oocca race while hearing it. They sure are weird. I would like if they were more explored - i expected a little more from the City in the Sky.

I might be the weirdo who wants to know more about the oocca, though.

Look, if it's a fight you want, I'm an easy enough guy to find. Just say you want to do this, and we'll do this, okay?

Seriously, though, I do get and recognize the game has some flaws, especially if you're playing it as originally presented -- which is my least-recommended way to play. I think that the Restore Points/Save States on the Wii U/3DS negate a LOT of that if you use them properly, though.

Really, I'd love to see a new game from Nintendo that takes everything great about the game -- and before anyone says anything, there's a lot that's great about it -- and refines the rougher edges, like starting back at North Palace after a Game Over or restart, not saving experience points or lives, etc.

Frankly, the two NES games, LttP, LBW, and TP are probably my Top 5 Zelda games (if we're looking purely at main series).

Dark Souls was basically Miyazaki putting Zelda 2 in 3D and polishing off the rough edges.

I need to try it sometime, but what I'm craving would have more the Nintendo feel to it. Like, if not as a Zelda game, maybe Kid Icarus.

I mean, I don't know if Zelda 2 was a deliberate inspiration, but the focus on exploration, punishing death with a loss of experience and the way combat has a feeling of ebb and flow all feel very Zelda 2. At the very least, I get much more of a Zelda vibe than I do Castlevania (though I do get why people make that comparison).

All games that came before were merely forerunners to Dark Souls. All games that came after are merely ripping off Dark Souls.

I'm going to go on the record and say I don't think Dark Souls is the new version of Zelda or Castlevania

I'm enjoying this series. I'm not sure Brown is making any new or unique observations, but it's nice to see someone attempt analysis of Zelda dungeons, and what makes them tick (or not).

Dark Souls and the Zelda games come from the same Japanese western-fantasy monomyth: copies of D&D 1E brought by Dutch sailors, in exchange for open trade ports & the right to practice Christianity

I apologize for advancing that opinion in the Dark Souls thread of the official Dark Souls forum. I can certainly see where it might be obnoxious to have people turn the subject of the thread into another game entirely.

(In truth I haven't developed enough of an opinion on Dark Souls to say what I think about it either way, but by god does seeing it get brought up in every discussion get annoying.)

I just enjoy joking about Dark Souls, I don't find using the game as a frequent point of reference to be annoying.

I do think it's a little ridiculous how it has become the baseline for comparison when it comes to assessing games with a modicum of challenge. But then again I really really like the game so I dunno.

Just wanted to pop in here and say how much I really enjoy playing Majora's Mask on a 3DS with a circle pad pro... the free-movement camera is really awesome.

When something becomes hugely influential it becomes something other things are then compared to. People have been saying "Like Zelda but..." for thirty years now without batting an eye.

As for my earlier post that started this whole thing, there really are enough similarities between Zelda II and Dark Souls that it's not at all out there to compare the two games.

I totally agree that comparing games to Dark Souls is over done and cliche. It's silly to me too. But all and all I agree with Issun.

It's something I never really think about, but it's a feature that, all on its own, makes the game feel a lot more modern.

Someday I'll get back to it. Stalled out because I completed Snowhead and then went back in time without turning in my stray fairies. I felt so very stupid and defeated that I could not continue.

To be honest, while I could play Majora's Mask with the Circle Pad Pro if I wanted to, I haven't really needed it.

I don't think Dark Souls is actually that hugely influential yet, at least on a AAA level. Not many obvious imitators, and "hard games" is a bit simple since it's a trend in general.
