I'm currently playing Dead Cells, and it has some pretty rad player-controlled buzzsaws.

Cosmic Star Heroine froze up on me right in the middle of the first boss.

Way to set a great first impression, game.

I mean the Meatboy variety of buzzsaws, which are fine in Meatboy but annoying in anything else.

A made a large error in judgement by starting a Zangetsu-Solo-Ignore-Friends run in Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. I have somehow made it to stage 6, but the boss of said stage is seemingly designed to swiftly end all ZSIF runs in total anguish. My options are comically limited and I don't know if victory is achievable.

Mooooom, Recore is being a jerk to me!

At first, I liked the game in spite of its flaws. Sure it didn't run at a consistent frame rate and the physics sometimes felt a little off, but it had spunk! But then it got increasingly obvious that the team behind it had run out of ideas. There's a lot of items to collect, but they're a lot of the same items... scrap robot parts, mostly. It's kind of hard to get excited when you crack open a treasure chest in a tough to reach place and find another K-9 head. Sure am glad I put forth the effort.

Then there's the combat. It seemed pretty inventive and fun at first, but then robots start popping up out of the sand with alarming frequency and things you need to progress are gated behind a series of increasingly hard, increasingly repetitive battles. Is one armor-plated robot ape not enough for you? Well how about you fight that same ape again, except now there are tiny little robots floating overhead that restore its energy and hold your partner captive so it can't help you? Oh, you finished that guy too. All right, how about TWO apes of a different color, with the same gnat-bots flying around?

You couldn't defeat both of those together, could you? That's okay, you can start the battle all over again from the first mecha-gorilla. Well, I could, if I hated myself that much. But now, I just hate Inafune and Armoire Games or whatever the hell the Metroid Prime people are currently calling themselves. So I think I'm going to quit and do something more productive with my time, like slam my fingers in a car door for about ten minutes.

And oh yes, the platforming. Inafune forgot the harsh lessons of Mega Man X7 and decided to put 2D platforming in a 3D game. It's fairly forgiving... if you reach the top of a ledge without landing directly on it, Joule will automatically pull herself up. But then the design team starts throwing out all these platforming challenges that would be frustrating in a 2D game and sure as hell don't belong in a third person action title with limited peripheral vision. (Hit a button and scramble for a door before it closes? It's in here. Yaaay.) There are also rails you can grab with your spider bot, except the spider won't actually grab it unless it's in direct view and a prompt appears on screen. It won't even TRY to grab the rail unless the computer wills it... you'll just plummet to the bottom of the playfield while hammering X in vain.

That added lit cigarette in the eye is the radiation that poisons your character if you get too close to the boundaries of the playfield. Think you can reach that distant item by scaling the cliffs nearby? Nope. If the designers don't want you to get that trinket until you've collected a specific power-up, you ain't gettin' it, and if you go out of bounds to try to reach it, you'll fall over dead. Where are those boundaries? You won't know until the radiation meter pops up on the screen. So some cliffs are okay to climb and other ones are filled with radon, and the only way you'll find out is through trial and error. Lovely.

There's a lot of stuff to do in Recore, yes. But it's mostly the same stuff, and it's mostly annoying stuff. I'm not even halfway through this and I'm already thinking about tapping out. Thank goodness Xbox Game Pass affords me that luxury... if I owned this game outright, I might keep torturing myself with it.

I don't know how much help it'll be, since I don't know what the nature of the problem you're having is and that's a pretty straight-forward fight with no real "tricks", but, FWIW, here's an edited excerpt from my zero-damage Boss guide:
Quote:

When she pauses the second time, wait out the blood rain underneath an umbrella (make sure it's one that you've hit recently, so that it doesn't start moving during the rain). Rinse and repeat. To avoid her desperation attack, begin slashing the umbrellas so that they're clustered close together as you run to the very left or right edge of the screen to avoid the blood cyclone, then ascend to the top umbrella and face towards it. Once the face manifests, slash it as it charges at you and you'll blast a hole in the cyclone so it will pass by you harmlessly.

Sonic Mania is wonderful, but I’m getting crushed by the bosses. The rocket dude seems like it requires a ton of precision, and the spider just takes a really long time & I inevitably mess up somewhere along the way. Are the rest of the bosses like this? Am I just bad at Sonic?

The limitless power of complaining on the internet allowed me to beat the boss in two tries. I didn’t have the whip, since I needed the talisman to deal with the anchor knights, so I just had to do it the extremely hard way. Then I beat the last two levels. That part with the frogs at the end of stage 8 didn’t need to be in there. A lot of the levels are way to long, really. It’s the same problem I had with Shovel Knight.

Now all that’s left is Boss Rush, which had been giving me so much grief. Beating all the bosses with Vanilla Zangetsu has drilled the boss patterns into my skull, however, so I think I can do this now.

Mania's bosses are pretty consistently crap, honestly. Easily the worst part of the game.

The boss fights have problems, but I get why they have problems. It's largely because they lean towards the more demanding set piece fights of Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD, where it's harder to get in the hits you need to win. If the bosses took less blows to defeat, and/or if there were more opportunities to get in those blows, it'd probably improve the fights a bunch.

Did Inafune get some of the team that worked on the 3D Bionic Commando Sequel to come with him?

Heh, possibly! Dark Void had the same problem with deadly boundaries, didn't it?

I noticed later that some of the cliffs have teeny little signs on them that suggest the surrounding area is toxic. Problem is, they're small enough that you have to get really close to read them, and that's not conducive to your health.

I did make it past the ape-fest in the Warren. Turns out I needed to switch partners... the robot gorillas are weak against your own robot gorilla. That leads to another problem in the game... you see the same robot types A LOT, and even have a few of them as sidekicks. Sure they change colors, but big whoop.

The Evil Within is one of the shittiest games I've played in a long time.

What the hell is with this game? It's corny, there's RPG stat progression, my guy walks way too slow and the designs are stupid as hell.

I mean look at this.

Wow, so atmosphereic, how horrific. he's slashing at a wall and throwing a tantrum.

Alright, I'm not trying to bully this game, a lot of horror games have AI bugbears!
A lot of places are meant to be run through by scared players! I get it, but I'm straight up limping in this segment of the game and avoiding this guy with some really lame stealth crouch walking segments as he grunts and waves his arms around.

Also if he sees you at the start of the game the canned death animation automatically pulls you into a totally differently lit room than the one you were in, this just feels sloppy and janky as fuck.

So I get outta there and now I'm in a forest, I collect blue goo to get points to hold more ammo except there's really no ammo. I guess I sneak through everything. This isn't fun and it isn't scary and it's a fuzzy looking game. I have to burn bodies!?

But I've seen screens of later parts of the game and the art and backgrounds look stunning? I wanna see that but I'm too busy slumming through a bland take of the RE4 village.

This is so lame and its kind of making me retroactively question Mikami's acumen entirely...

Conversely I just finished a playthrough of Dead Space 2 on Zealot difficulty, a game that looks plays and sounds better

it does make me laugh every time I see it, lol. I love the health still sliding down to zero after he's already in pieces.

I paid like 15 bucks for the complete edition so while I dont' feel like I wasted money I do see the DLC icons for the game folder and it just like "well shit I know I will never see this"

and c'mon! Dead Space has comical ragdoll dismemberment too and it also rules!

Skies of Arcadia Legends is a pretty fun game. I enjoy most of it, except maybe for the fact that there always seem to be so many monsters in every random encounter. No biggie, the fire spell is pretty effective for group killing, and I already have Vyses third special, which crits every enemy at once.

But after the desert part, you have to move through the Southern Ocean, where every encounter contained a) this stupid floater monsters, which are immune (?) against magic and dodge often and b) jerks with instant-death spells that seem to hit 100% of the time. Why were instant death spells ever a thing, and why do they still exist? I don't think I ever played a JRPG where I didn't find them to be bad game design.

This is made even worse by the fact that I can't revive anyone at the moment. I do have the first revive spell, but it only has a 50% chance of succeding, which feels more like 10%. Seriously, I had to cast that stupid spell ten times before it finally succeded. Just give me a spell that revives all the time. I mean, come on.

Last night, I was goin' through the CS mode of DariusBurst Chronicle Saviours, and did a long mission that was themed around G-Darius, and played a bunch of music from that game. "B.T. Dutch" wasn't played at all.

...I was sad.

On another note about that game, unlocking ships to use in any mission for CS mode, I get. Having to pay to use those unlocked ships EVERY TIME I WANT TO USE THEM AT ALL? Stupid. What is the point of unlocking them and powering them up if I have to pay more points just to use them at all? It's just a rental at that point...

On one hand, Gundam Versus is a Gundam game released in English.

On the other hand.
One-hundred-fucking-thirty-five dollars in DLC mobile suits???
Some of these guys are clear DLC fodder like the GM Sniper II from the Dreamcast Gundam game (!!!), but like. The developers knew damn well shit like Burning Gundam and Gundam Epyon should have been in the base game.
