St. Vincent is the Halo of musicians. Very good every time, never blowing my mind.

I agree there's usually only 1 or 2 songs per album that is truly sticky for me, but they're very good. Also she's one of the few big acts that uses my company's pedals and really uses them like they're meant to be used (to make some really effed up, weird sounds). You have to put the work in to tame them.

Hounds of Love continues to be excellent and continues to reward the listener as it has done for so many years.

The Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile album is like a warm, fuzzy blanket in this cold, effed up world.

Destroyer's new album is basically: "hey, you know your favorite album from the last decade or so? We took out the Roxy Music and absolutely redlined the New Order."

I'm not sure if it's transcendent, but damn if it isn't exactly my jam.

I don't know, I thought her self-titled album was really good. The new one fits your description a little better: it's solid, but not amazing. Actually, there have been like a dozen new albums from artists I like this year and they're almost all good, but unsurprising. Strangely, I think I'm liking the new Beck the most, despite the fact that it doesn't sound very Beck-y.

Actor is my favorite, I think. I really like St. Vincent, but I've found that her really brilliant, original, transcendent material is concentrated into three or four songs per album, with the rest being fine to very good. Which isn't a bad batting average at all, but critics go fucking crazy for her.

This is about how I feel, too (though, like MCBanjoMike, I think her self-titled was genuinely great). She's not an absolute favourite of mine, but I'm always excited to see what she has in store next.

I actually think I like her collaborative album with David Byrne the most, though it got mixed reviews. The single was kind of an awkward fusion of their styles, but the rest was terrific IMO.

New album from the Materia Collective featuring orchestrated tracks from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Their previous release similar to this one was Zelda themed (Hero of Time) and was really good. Only listened to a handful of tracks so far, but seems great so far.

Similar to the Zelda album, they also launched a Kickstarter to produce a second follow on album with additional tracks and physical rewards like CDs, T-Shirts, and vinyl.

And like all their work, this is a fully licensed and sanctioned release.

For something on the opposite end composition wise, Shiryu recently released Castlevania: Chiptunes of the Night which features NES and SNES 'demakes' of a tracks form Symphony of the Night. Most of the NES ones are great, though a handful of the SNES ones are grating due to the sound font choices.

My aunt recorded and released a classical music album of her flute playing, sometimes in a piano/flute duet, and sometimes backed by a small orchestra. She's one of the most talented musicians I've ever met, and the entire album is pretty remarkable.

Link to her website, if you're interested!

There are finally full YMO albums on Spotify! (They're all fucking incredible, so if you're unfamiliar you should start wherever you like. My fave is BGM...)

So King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, a 7-piece Australian psych band, just released their fourth full-length record this year as a pay-what-you-want, and it's shocking to me for a few reasons:

-All 4 of these records sound distinct from each other (this feels the most '70s-proggy, owing to extra synths & mellotron as well as a studious aversion to 4/4 time)
-They're all at least good, and two of them are excellent IMO
-They've somehow recorded all this music while touring the entire world all year, playing 73 shows so far (with their own festival in Australia coming up)
-They started the year with a goal of releasing 5 full length records this year - this is a preposterous claim but at this point I have no choice but to believe their sincerity

Since this is the closest this subforum has to a NWIOT:

For the first time in 19 years no white males have been nominated for album of the year. Progress, I suppose.

Is it that ridiculous to suggest that a white man released one of the year's five best albums each of the last 19 years?

No, but it's nice to see an organization that has struggled with recognizing/rewarding the work of artists of color, especially w/r/t to hip-hop, work to correct that.

(That said I feel like Lorde is going to win that award, which I'm ok with because her album is v. good, but I'd love to see Glover or Kendrick take it.)

Do they often give awards to albums that underperform expectations? I honestly don't know.

I would say Kendrick Lamar has a very good chance at winning.

So it turns out I love the Buzzcocks. A lot. I've heard some of their songs before but random happenstance had me listening to a lot more and I HAD to buy an album. I decided to by the one that has "Everybody's Happy Nowadays", which, to my frustration, is only in a compilation album. And in the words of Bruce McCulloch's obnoxious Doors fan "'best of' albums are for housewives and little girls." OK, I'm not as hardline/awful as that on the subject, but my preference is to not get those when I can (though best ofs have helped introduce me to some great music). Especially if I want to go back and get one of their albums, only to find out I already have half of the songs already. I'm just weird like that.

But "Singles Going Steady" nonetheless is wall to wall awesome rock. Apparently, it was the album designed to introduce the Buzzcocks to America and it does a hell of a job. Pretty much every song has me rockin' to it, which is always an embarrassing sight if you pass me by the street. (I remember some poor soul I passed on a lonely bike trail as I was singing Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" at the top of my lungs). So far, though there are certainly people more well-versed on the subject than I, I think they might be my favourite punk band and the best of the 70's.

Singles Going Steady is essential owning even for the non-casual. Only four songs on the comp are from their albums, and the rest are non-album singles and B-sides.
