Default Wreck It Ralph: Toy Story for retro video games

Walt Disney Animation Studios and the man behind a handful of awesome Simpsons and Futurama episodes are teaming up to bring you a movie about a washed up 80s arcade character coping with life after the limelight.

It's probably gonna at least be pretty neat. It may be downright awesome.

Bowser's in it. Trailer's gonna be out soon. Hits theaters in November.

This here's a thread for it.

Here's the teaser

"Oh come on, that's only worth fifty points!"

I am looking forward to this. The fact that it's by Disney and not Dreamworks gives me hope.

It looks more fun and interesting than Brave does!

I just hope there's a good story behind it and it's not just a cameo-extravaganza.

It took me a moment to realize that the hobos begging for food there are Q*Bert and Co. Then it became exponentially more awesome.

I'm totally seeing this.

And there's Chun Li and Zangief together in the background! Which contradicts some of the rumors I've heard about Zangief... ahem...

I'm so excited for this movie. I can see me and my son enjoying it together (at least, when he's a little older).

So it's the Who Framed Roger Rabbit of retro gaming? Cool.

I don't think we're going to be so lucky as to have it also be a noir homage as well as a salute to retro gaming, but wouldn't it be pretty to think so?

Yeah I was stretching a little. More the whole "cooperation between companies" element.

I somehow managed to only hear about this one today, but I am already pretty darn interested and can't wait to see more! That's a neat little teaser.

I'm surprised so many video companies are in on this. Dr. Wily/some SF characters will be in it, so we know Capcom's down, and Q*Bert and some other old characters will be around. I dunno, could be neat.

Now now, there's no need to dis Brave. There's enough fun and whimsy to go around!

But it's true! Brave has done absolutely nothing for me from either an aesthetic or storytelling (based on the trailers, anyway) standpoint as of today. This makes it two years in a row that I've decided to wait on word of mouth before checking a Pixar movie out in the theater.

Yeah, Brave has been surprisingly low-key in my household. My wife and I keep calling it Pixar's Dreamworks film.

I'm interested in how many actual retro game characters will be in this, as opposed to You Know Who This Is Basically But We Didn't Get The Rights To Use His/Her/Its Likeness.

Brave: It's Pixar, so I'm excited. Trailers are often misleading. At the very least I don't expect it to be Cars-level bad, so I'm optimistic!

Wreck-It Ralph: Despite just saying that trailers are misleading, I eager to see the trailer. Although I wouldn't be surprised if the trailer ended up being a result of misguided executive meddling, and have nothing but cameos and lame jokes. For that matter, I hope the final product won't be cameos and lame jokes!

Brave looks promising because it's Pixar tackling something in a medieval European setting that doesn't look based on a pre-existing fairy tale or story and has a female main character so that's two things we've never seen done by them before so much excitement from me here can'tbelieveIgettoseeitin4days...wheee!

Back to the topic: I can't believe this is a thing being made nor that I'd never heard about it until now. Could be good!

This is a silly point to make, but, if Brave is better than How To Train Your Dragon, I'll eat my hat*

Not fond of the teaser, it doesn't seem as though much effort's been put into making it look like an actual arcade game at all. The tropes are there but it seems very false. Which is a pretty niche complaint, I'll admit.

Also, who is this movie for? I'm kind of interested but if it's just a Scott Pilgrim-esque parade of lame references I will be sad. I feel pandered to, and I hate that. Still, early days.

Cars was bad? Sheesh, I missed that memo.

I have the same complaint, and I think it's totally valid. If this movie is supposed to click with fans of retro games, but they don't nail the retro games feel properly, what's the point?

This ties into the whole "who did they get" thing. Having Q-Bert and Pac Man in the background is great, but it'll ring hollow to me if they don't also get, say, Donkey Kong. Someone upthread mentioned Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Okay, but imagine they couldn't get Disney to sign off on that movie. Who does Bugs Bunny argue with? Woody Woodpecker*? It wouldn't have had the same impact.

That said the movie looks cool and I doubt the vidjagame references will make or break it. And honestly Tangled built up so much goodwill with me that I'd see Ralph even if it looked terrible.

*Nothing against Woody Woodpecker, you understand. But he's not Mickey Mouse.

Donkey Kong won't be in the movie because Wreck-It Ralph essentially is Donkey Kong.

I also have the same complaint about the teaser, which makes me pretty skeptical about the movie in general. They should make an actual Fix-It Felix game ripping off Donkey Kong or Popeye.

All the more reason to include him! Because, see, DK is a villain whose career took off in the early 90s and he became a beloved hero as well! Someone for Ralph to look up to.

Also, Ralph isn't DK. Ralph is the monster from Rampage.

Wasn't Roger Rabbit at least somewhat inspired by Bugs, though? And he still showed up in that.

George!

I didn't like Tangled at all when I saw it, but all the complements I've seen thrown at it subsequently make me wonder if I should give it another chance in case it caught me in one of my moods.

Edit:

The inevitable tie-in videogame for this movie is going to be interesting at the very least.

I heard months ago that Disney pretty much got access to whatever characters they wanted. I mean, we know there are characters from Super Mario Bros., Sonic, Street Fighter II, Pac Man, Mortal Kombat, Mega Man and Q*Bert. What major retro companies are still not represented?
