XC this year is going to be pretty good for the USA. I think there are three people from my town competing in the Olympics although I need to look up their specific events.

Personally I say less skating more biathlon.

For me, less skating and more of almost anything else (unless that skating is short track speed skating, then bring it on).

In extremely Vaeran news, Marvel sponsored the U.S. ski team, so their uniforms are all based on Captain America and Captain Marvel.

Spoiler popped for huge

Don't they look pumped?!?!?!

I actually really like the Captain America one. The second one gives me more of a Wonder Woman vibe than anything else.

The only sport that really has my interest is curling. I downloaded the NBC Sports app just so I can mainline aaaaaaallllllllll of the ice shuffleboard. It's apparently marketed in the States as a sport for old people who like beer, so it's right in my wheelhouse.

I'd forgotten about Slopestyle. So fun to watch.

Just watched the Red Gerard run, it was interesting how at the top when he'd had two bad runs and was about to start his final one he was hugging and saying thanks to coaches/friends since this was his last event. I figure he just relaxed and stopped thinking he would win, and that let him succeed. And I always enjoy shocked swearing that they forget to bleep!

The Canadian women's hockey team destroyed the Russian team. Which I'm fine with since they shouldn't be there.

I know it's old hat to bitch about NBC's coverage of the Olympics but good grief it really is horrible. I was trying to watch some of the speed skating this afternoon and NBC kept going to a split screen view with the big frame being an interview and the actual racing being relegated to to a small frame taking up far less than a quarter of the screen. It just seems so absurd that I thought I would try and tune in for some of the speed skating and the actual event was being in a tiny little box that compared unfavorably to Sega CD FMVs.

Gotta show those human interest stories. Obviously no one is intersted in anything else about the Olympics.

I think we talked about it back in Rio but NBC’s numbers show they don’t know how to turn the Olympics into viewership on any platform. It is kinda funny to me how they’ve heard the same criticism re: presentation since the 90s and changed nothing substantive

So far I've managed to watch the Curling, Snowboarding and Ice Dancing I tuned in for without too much bullshit. We'll see though.

So why don't they let someone else do it?

Most companies don't have the money to do so. NBC paid around $12 billion for the Olympics coverage rights through 2032, and the IOC doesn't care about the quality of the coverage when that much money is on the table. Frankly, I don't think any of the other TV companies that bid would do much better on the coverage front, and I don't think the quality of the broadcast is really what's causing the decline in numbers. As a young person who loves sports and doesn't own a TV, I think NBC could do a much better job with their streaming interface, but even then I dunno how much impact that would have (I would appreciate it, though).

I think the current goings on in the geopolitical stage have a lot to do with declining numbers. There was a considerable fracas over the Sochi games re: Russia’s anti-LGBT policies, the labor practices of building stadiums in Rio, and the fact that most venues of past Olympics are abandoned wastes of taxpayer money.

There was talk about having the 2024 games in Philadelphia, and I was one of many who were going to fight the bid however possible. Also the fact that the world stage has countries at each other’s throats more so than usual has left people jaded.

(Oh, and no NHL players this year.)

Skiing is somehow even more boring than I remembered. Snowboard Cross remains real life Mario Kart and should be the only sport contested at these games aside from Short Track and figure skating

hockey is disappointing without NHL players
