I've never had any Wild Turkey. By the time I could afford bourbon above Jimmy there were much better options on the market.

I don't think anyone besides me really cares about the retrogame-themed cocktails I've been tinkering with, but I'm really happy with how this week's turned out. It is delicious and has a nicely complex flavor. Here is a sneak peek.

Yesterday was a perfect day for Manhattans, so I made some for me and V. Nothing fancy, just Bulleit rye, Martini Rosso and Angostura bitters, but I really enjoyed mine.

I think they're really neat, although every one I've looked at so far involves at least one ingredient that I do not own and might not even be able to purchase.

Yeah, there's been an explosion of reasonable bourbon on the market. Plus it's easier than ever to find bottled-in-bond stuff, which is rarely worse than fine.

Picked some of this up, today:

It's hard to get plum brandy around here, so I'm really looking forward to opening this up tonight or tomorrow.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before in this thread but if you like blended scotch then you owe it to yourself to try Monkey Shoulder. I've got a glass next to me right now and it is tasty.

Have some champagne left over? Tired of mimosas?

Throw a nice shrub into your champagne to give it some extra (delicious) punch!

Was out in Durham on Tuesday night and had a Tiger Lily: Capel Pisco, Cayenne honey syrup, Cointreau, Lemon juice, fresh Ginger juice.

Tasty.

Beam Suntory's Baker's Bourbon is pretty good neat, but with a few mL of water it opens up and becomes a flavor sensation. Much spicier than a Knob Creek or Woodford, and though I haven't read the mash bill I would lay money on a high rye content.

e: And I would lose. 13% rye, almost half what you see out of the much sweeter Old Grand-Dad. Those barrels must sweat like a banker in church.

e2: Here we go:

Quote:
It is the regular Jim Beam mash-bill but aged for a minimum of 7 years and is bottled at a ‘hold onto your hat’ ABV of 53.5%. It is however distilled initially at a lower than usual proof (the actual figure is not released) than the average Jim Beam whiskey and is aged in the centre racks of the distillery warehouse. The intention in all of this is to allow the bourbon to pull out more of the nut, fruit and vanilla flavours from the barrel.
The Beam mash bill is pedestrian at best, but 7 years of aging is the sort of thing that turns even the mildest distillate into a goddamned sexual Tyrannosaurus

Pusser's Gunpowder Proof Rum (109 proof, the strength dictated by the Royal Navy) will blow your eyebrows off your face. Nose is caramel, kerosene, the aroma of bad choices. Flavor is the crust of a creme brulee, golden syrup, napalm with a finish that will carry you through the night and tuck you into bed.

Water softens the initial hit somewhat, but holy shit. This stuff is like drinking God's wrath. I can't recommend.

Raisins, plums, dried figs, like a Christmas fruitcake. But the alcohol hits you in the mouth like Ike Ibeabuchi. handle with care.

I will add that "gunpowder proof" or "Navy strength" rum is defined as that which will not prevent powder from firing when the two are mixed. You also run into Navy strength gin sometimes.

In an odd coincidence, Lemon Hart overproof rum, my favorite face-fucking chemical death pretending to be a beverage, includes gunpowder among its tasting notes.

Another good way to drink strong rum, look up the Tech N9ne song "Caribou Lou."

Sailors weren't necessarily drinking it that strong. The stuff was put away at extra strength because space is at a premium aboard ship. Sailor's grog was always watered down.

which is not to say that dudes in the Royal Navy didn't spend most of their waking time with a heavy buzz on.

Coincidentally I ended up back out at the same place, so I got to try the other drink I had my eye on - the Liquid Smoke. Mezcal, pineapple, and jalapeno-maple syrup, topped with a few jalapeno slices. The flavors in this drink were not fucking around. Smoke, spicy, and alcohol in about that order. It was good.

Considering how much of the Navy was made up of unwilling conscripts, that's not a surprise.

It turns out that when you want people to stick to their routine when they're surrounded by grapeshot, shrapnel, and blood, it helps if they're all half in the bag.
