I have spent the last four hours failing the same Front Mission 2 mission twice in a row. The dumbshit escort AI has twice now decided to go fuck off flying over some buildings where literally none of my units can go help it. The second time the very last enemy on the map just mowed the AI pilot down while all my wanzers sat there BECAUSE I CAN'T CLIMB BUILDINGS, AI HELICOPTER. THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT ME TO DOOOOOOOO

and now i have to go to bed mad about video games

EDIT:also, what arcane magic determines how far a wanzer can move? there's a mobility stat and a move stat but both are in the double-digits as opposed to the 3-5 spaces my wanzers can arbitrarily move

i'd ask the internet, but the faqs won't tell me, and there are only two lets plays of this game, neither with English commentary

I want to say a square of movement is 10 move points, with a modifier for height differences.

So, I was playing Batman Vengeance. Don't play Batman Vengeance.

It's pretty faithful to the old Batman cartoons, but there are a lot of problems with the game that are just mystifying; boneheaded mistakes that could have been fixed with a little playtesting and common sense. Paths through each stage aren't always clear, to the point where the first half of the bridge area just seems to end abruptly, with no apparent way to progress. Turns out you have to hug the wall to squeeze through a small gap between shipping containers. The wall press is a move intended for stealth, and is rarely necessary, if the CPU lets you use it at all. How would you know to use it here?

The puzzling decisions continue with the control. Batman can hold the edges of platforms... unless he can't, and the only way to know for sure is through trial and error. There are way too many instances in the game where Batman's abilities are only available to you when the game deems them necessary, and that is beyond frustrating.

What's worse is the way Batman walks, always with one slow first step before he breaks into a run. The game does have analog control, with Batman continuing to walk slowly if you gently tilt the stick, but tilting it all the way always has the same effect... one timid first step, followed by running. This makes leaping from one platform to the next awkward and risky, and there's enough jumping over bottomless pits for this to be a serious issue. Again, why was this done? Why didn't someone on the staff stand up and express their objections? Heaven knows I had plenty.

What else? Combat is pretty blowful, a tiresome affair of tapping the attack button when next to enemies (and the jump button, which becomes a kick button during fights. Okaaay). There's little nuance; you can't wait for openings in the opponent's defense or counter their attacks, making fights a boring chore. It's a chore you'll have to repeat, if you don't handcuff the thugs you've beaten. If you run out of handcuffs, they'll keep getting up, no matter how you've knocked them down. I caught one in the blast radius of an exploding barrel and he returned to his feet thirty seconds later.

Batman Vengeance tries to mix things up with various styles of play, but they're not that great either. Diving after falling characters to rescue them is an annoyance, and flying the Batwing through the densely packed city of Gotham will make you want to put a fist through the television. Everything about this game is frustrating, including the fact that they got all the original voice actors to play their roles from the animated series. You want to like the game for that reason, but it's so hard to enjoy for so many other reasons... and they're often senseless reasons which could have been fixed with just a little forethought and effort. It's agonizing, knowing what this game could have been.

Invest some creds into making a decent iframe chip and stock up on healing items, they're wicked cheap. Once you're not worried about using a consumable resource and have some breathing room to heal and not get instantly exploded in heavier combat the game suddenly becomes a cake walk.

if you don't want or can't find the iframe chips, also consider the heal-on-kills chip or the auto-heal chip. the first one doesn't actually care how strong or weak the defeated enemy is, it'll heal a set percentage of your hp for each one. you might think "what, like 5%? 10%?", and you would technically be correct...for +0 and +1. deadly heal +2 recovers 20% max per kill, all the way up to +5 and literally regaining half of your max health whenever you poke a mook.

once i'd gotten that set up, i don't think i ever used a consumable again

ArugalaZ:

Yeah, Batman Vengeance has problems, but I personally enjoyed it. Now, keep in mind that I enjoyed it at a very specific time, and that time was when I acquired it for $5.99 from the used section of Hollywood Video in the mid to late 00's. Before Arkham Asylum, around or after Batman Begins (the game) came out.

Each bad-to-mediocre Batman game had bits and pieces of the right ideas in them. Batman Begins had stealth, and the idea of using the environment to unnerve enemies to take them off guard. Batman Vengeance had the voice cast from the animated series, and platforming enhanced by the grappling and climbing mechanics. Sin Tzu had similar production values as Vengeance but was a beat 'em up with emphasis on combos.

Okay, those are less strengths of Sin Tzu than "features that could be bullet points on the back of the box." Sin Tzu is guano and Vengeance is way better, unless we're talking about the GBA versions.

Dark Tomorrow looked like a really, really rough version of what Asylum wanted to be--using gadgets, stealth, climbing/traversal while exploring big open levels. It had some great cutscenes. Apparently it suffered from a long development hell followed by being rushed out the door to make a quick buck.

Anyway, Vengeance itself would have been way better if it didn't force you to manually aim batarangs in first person. The idea of aiming the batarang at enemies' hands to disarm them? Awesome. Actually doing it? Clunky and annoying. By the time Asylum came out, making this an automatic trick you could do was more in line with design principles of the time. Plus, the combat was...PS2/GC era clunky. Not horrible, but just about par for the course for the time.

BTW, on GBA, Batman Vengeance is a bit like Adventures of Batman and Robin on SNES, only crap. It even has a knockoff of Trouble in Transit! It still sucks!

The GBA Rise of Sin Tzu is also like AoB&R on SNES, but not as good. It's a fun time, but there are better 2D Batman games is all. Maybe get it for a fiver if you see it.

When you play Civ IV on Settler to relax, as one does, and suddenly this time Montezuma aggros and destroys you as you're almost finished with your space victory. On Settler.

Isn't "aggro" like Montezuma's entire schtick though? Dude is in that narrow range of human emotion between "confused dude at the corner store right as the fairy dust starts kicking in" and "about to perform a mortal kombat fatality"

My point is that on Settler even he is pretty chill, and then suddenly an RNG I didn't know was there decided "Time to fuck you over!"

It's definitely a questionable aspect of the game.

I picked up Corpse Party last time it went on sale and figured it’d be a good bit of Halloweeny playing.

And, despite the efforts of the script, it turns out that RPG Maker assets don’t contribute anything to a sense of spooky foreboding of being trapped in a cursed murder-school.

Furthermore, the dramatic weight of the script is totally undone pretty early on when a character announces she must “butter-up my pooper” when complaining of a rash.

In conclusion; I could have spent that money on lunch, instead.

It's indie horror, or at least started out that way. Though the anime school girls and chibi dollies bundle should've been hints that some of the dark places the game goes would fall under a different kind of horror.

I have heard so many very wildly varying accounts of corpse party that at this point I'm not even sure it's real, but a mere schoolyard prank of a videogame concept along the lines of Polybius or the behind-the-truck Mew in Pokemon.

The Blood-Stained Sanctuary in Cave Story is kicking my butt repeatedly. I've made it to Ballos several times but never with more than about 25 HP. It's the Heavy Press battle that's causing me most of my trouble at this point.

I should not have used the Life Pot at the Undead Core...

Yeah this needs a confirmation pop-up - "Are you really sure you want to do this?"

And then clicking "Yes" needs to trigger a game over.
