♫ Share and talk about your music ♫

I'd love for this to be a thread where we share and discuss finished pieces and works in progress, provided there're enough people here who actually compose. You don't have to be a Professional Composer; as long as you make music on some semi-regular basis, you're welcome. Can I get some input as to whether or not this topic will have activity before linking my own stuff? I don't want it to just be a vanity project.

narcodis 11-09-2014 06:20 PM

I'm not opposed to the idea of this thread, but I know most people sort of have their own threads to showcase their own stuff, myself included. Maybe this thread would be a little redundant, but it might be cool to consolidate music stuff so other musicians who check the thread (I'm going to think no one else will) can offer input.

Anyway my soundcloud profile is at https://soundcloud.com/twinplus. I haven't posted anything substantial for a while, but I'll be sure to mention it when I do.

Warg 11-09-2014 08:47 PM

I think this thread is a good idea! We do have a Random Arting Thread for general posting, so this thread could be a good music counterpart.

Diplo 11-10-2014 03:13 PM

Well, all right. Let's try it anyway!

This is my soundcloud account: https://soundcloud.com/diplocephalus

I also upload music to YouTube.

Last year, I released an album on Ubiktune. I wasn't too happy with the mixing (lost the raw files to a computer meltdown and had to make do with exported files that weren't really finalized), so I've begun touching up some of the tracks, several of which you can hear below.

I've been working on a bunch of stuff for the past year, and I'm intending to release another album on Ubiktune and a separate one on Bandcamp with instrumentation that's less FM-esque. Later tonight, I'll dig around and see what works in progress I can share that relate to those projects.

Balrog 11-10-2014 06:50 PM

Your stuff is cooool, Diplo.

Thanks!

To expand a bit more on my ideas for the albums - with the Ubiktune album, I'm thinking of it as a sort of continuation of Vurgon, in terms of composition that is fragmented, yet motivic, and instrumentation that, while not actually being Legitimate FM, resembles FM tones.

Here's some stuff I'm intending to put on the album.

Empazzo

White Ceiling

Tentatonia

Dn Glimm

Round Trade

With the independent Bandcamp album, I guess there are going to be stylistic parallels, but generally speaking I'm aiming for a much richer and EDM-driven sound. It's probably gonna end up sounding like a Namiki shmup soundtrack or something. Below are several tracks.

Last Carrier (compositionally complete but still subject to technical tweaks)

Mideoharru (ditto; inspired by M. Hamauzu's style)

Vague Walk (Idk if this fits more on the other album)

Delusion Clamp

Signs of Vagrant Water (not sure about including this one, since it's actually an arrangement based on two melodies from Vagrant Story's soundtrack)

Diplo 11-17-2014 10:01 PM

Here's a track I uploaded a couple of days ago. It was originally written in 2012 for a game a friend and some others were working on (and which never materialized). There were two versions: a slower, quieter version (the one already linked) and a faster, comparatively percussive version. The former had sound issues that weren't present in the latter, though, so I decided on a whim to touch it up, change some instrumentation, and add an outro.

Diplo 11-30-2014 01:32 PM

This is a w.i.p. that I started last night and added on to a little today. At first I copied a bassline from a piece by Motoaki Takenouchi and was going to do something at a faster tempo. After some fiddling around that became its own thing, and everything else proceeded from there. Btw, I'm uploading all of these unfinished pieces to Tindeck, where you can listen to the pieces immediately, just in case anyone's not listening because they think the links are to automatic downloads or sites with twenty questionable "download" buttons or whatever.

This is a looping tune I wrote for Blitz Lunar.

The view count disparity between this thread and the uploaded music is really weird! The thread has several-tens-of-thousands of views, but the files have maybe several dozen listens. I'm curious what's going on. Are a ton of people reading this thread but just not listening to any of the music? That'd be... huh. Like, I'm not even annoyed. I'm just confused.

ANYWAY

After about a year and a half of not touching this track, I returned to it a couple of weeks ago and am pretty satisfied with the new bits that start around the last twenty seconds. Not much, but it's something. This composition has actually been on my mind often in that year and a half, but it's been hard to pick back up for some reason. I feel like it's just very easy to move on from works-in-progress and just start a million other ones. Meanwhile, I toss around a hundred ideas for those sidelined projects and don't actually implement any of them. And this has been especially hard to consider developing further because it's written in a much more harmonically discrete way than I'm used to doing.

Couple more things:
1) This is not a passepied.
2) I'm not wild about the ensemble, and am considering revamping the instrumentation once the piece is compositionally complete.

Balrog 02-01-2015 06:52 PM

I really like your stuff, Diplo. Would it be possible to put these on a site that isn't aggressively trying to install malware on my computer?

Diplo 02-01-2015 07:11 PM

I'm up for alternate suggestions. I've been using Tindeck for years and have never gotten any comments about malware, but if it's a problem for you, it must be a problem for some others. I try to upload a lot of my complete pieces to Soundcloud (no updates for a while there because my membership ran out, and I need to renew it once I have the money), but Tindeck has been good -- personally -- for saving works-in-progress.

Diplo 03-17-2015 07:08 PM

The music from the Mega Man X games annoys the hell out of me, so I parodied it: JILTED BUTTHEAPER (Tindeck link).

I also made a violently trashy chiptune track, THEME OF RETRO, (Soundcloud link) that is a tribute to bullshit.

Diplo 03-30-2015 07:28 PM

AIRWING. Diddly doodle. Spent an inordinate amount of time settling on an improvisation I liked for the last part. I enjoy working on these sort of short, repetitive tracks once in a while. You get a chance to fine-tune something on a very small scale, and it gives the result a confectionary quality, especially if the instruments have a bright, delicate sound.

Balrog 03-30-2015 07:56 PM

Real cool stuff, Diplo.

muteKi 03-31-2015 09:50 PM

So I was fiddling around with quasi-Schoenberg patterns and thought I should make the song as unlistenable as possible -- so I futzed about with stretch effects and equalization in Audacity and then compressed the thing at a fixed 64k mp3 compression rate.

I should not be allowed to make things

LOADING 1 & 2

muteKi, do you have any particular genres that you dabble in for original stuff?

muteKi 04-02-2015 10:25 PM

I tend a bit toward the funky side of things I'd say, but I also do the occasional metal- or dance-inspired track. And a lot of the atonal sort of stuff that I posted, but usually in a more serious and less terribly-compressed manner.

EDIT: One of the most recent original songs I've done that's not part of a larger project was a collaboration I did with some other people I know. We all passed a file back and forth in Skype and each added some stuff here and there. Like a lot of our stuff (like, all of us in the collab), it's in the style of the Streets of Rage games.

Linky!

Balrog 06-23-2015 07:30 PM

I like that one a lot.

muteKi 07-24-2015 03:58 PM

'Tis but another cover, but since I was in one of those moods I went and fiddled around a bit with the music from the factory stage from the 8-bit versions of SoR2. While I don't know that if it were on the Genesis that it would sound anything like this, I used mostly instruments I ripped from SoR songs.

Latest piece for pipe organ (via Soundcloud).

Johnny Unusual 08-23-2015 03:59 AM

It's very nice. Is that an actual pipe organ or a synthesized one. And if the former, do you own it or do you get to use it from elsewhere.

Diplo 08-26-2015 01:38 PM

I wish it were an actual pipe organ! It's synthesized.
