Did you know? Handheld WARNING messages

I've been holding on to these for many years, planning on finishing everything first and then posting it once. But it doesn't seem like I'm going to get everything done anytime soon. So, I'll just post what I have so far before I lose everything in a hard drive crash.

Handheld WARNING messages

When you insert a Game Boy Color, Neo Geo Pocket Color, or Wonderswan Color game on their respective monochromatic handheld, you'll get a warning screen alerting you that the game cannot be played on that system. Most of these warning screens are generic, but a lot of them feature some cool artwork not found anywhere else.

I decided to capture all those messages (almost a 1000 images worth!), for the world to see. Before this day, I don't believe there was any place online where you could see all these warning messages.

I was actually also working on getting all the Turbografx-16, Turbografx CD, PC-FX, and Sega CD warning screens you get when your Backup memory is full (or use the wrong system card). I'll be posting those soon, albeit in an incomplete form since there are a few games I still haven't done.

Check the SNK Vs Capcom warning messages for the Neo Geo Pocket Color for some good stuff!

Handheld Warning Screens

Like me on twitter and facebook, you servbots!
I don't make any money off this, but other sites report this and get more views than the actual source (me).

Wow, SNK vs. Capcom has a wide range of warning messages. Nice stuff.

Kishi 10-08-2016 03:28 PM

I'd seen the Match of the Millennium ones. They're brilliant.

Oh, and the all the Super Game Boy borders too. I'll post it tomorrow.

Perfect rendering of the feeling of incompatible hardware. You're a saint, Rey.

Double Dracula 10-08-2016 08:40 PM

Wow, this is great, Rey! I had no idea this phenomenon even existed.

Büge 10-08-2016 09:14 PM

Yeah, I thought this would be a thread about warnings of health risks from staring at screens for too long. But this is much better!

I knew it did, though I never tested it out on this big a scale. The original Game Boy had a li'l tab that locked the cartridge in place when the power was on, which is why the upper left corner looks like it's chipped. But the Super Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket cut that from the design.

Cartridges with Game Boy Color support have shells like regular Game Boy carts, but black. Cartridges that only work on GBC are transparent, and aside from a few exceptions* have a unique shell that loses the lock tab.

But, since they can still be plugged into the other units, that's why the warning screens were added.

* I'm of course talking about the rumble carts, which have a slot for the tab. The GBC-supporting Pokémon Pinball was the first, but there were many others that were GBC only carts. So instead of developing a whole new shell they just used the old one with the transparent plastic.

Very cool! Thanks for the info!

pudik 10-09-2016 12:54 AM

this is my aesthetic

Ludendorkk 10-09-2016 02:01 AM

This is excellent

Kishi 10-09-2016 02:15 AM

I noticed the Match of the Millennium screens have actual dialogue in the Japanese version instead of a generic warning message. So here's my amateur translation.

#1

YAGYU: Sorry! I beg your forgiveness!

YAGYU: This game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

YAGYU: So, it won't work with the monochrome version, you see!

YAGYU: Once you play it on the Color and win the tournament...

YAGYU: At the beginning of the title demo...

YAGYU: When the SNK VS CAPCOM logo appears, go ahead and press OPTION.

YAGYU: This is my way of apologizing. You should be able to have a lot of fun with this!

YAGYU: You're giving me such a cold look... This isn't easy for me...

YAGYU: This isn't easy for meeeeee!

(Note: The command unlocks a cut scene viewer.)

CHUN-LI: Sorry, but this game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

CHUN-LI: If you only have this monochrome Neo Geo Pocket, you won't be able to play...

XIANGFEI: Oooh, no fair! I was looking forward to this...

XIANGFEI: I'll have to go back to work and save up for a Color...

CHUN-LI: That being the case, please play on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. ♥

XIANGFEI: ...Life's rough...

#3

TAKATSU: DORYAAAAA!! I am Takatsu!!

TAKATSU: ...Hm? What's that hangdog look? Eh? Wondering why you're not looking at the title screen?

TAKATSU: To be honest with ya, this game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

TAKATSU: It's a real shame ya went 'n' bought a black-'n'-white...

TAKATSU: So do whatever it takes ta get yer hands on the color version, and PLAY!!

TAKATSU: C'mon, I'm beggin' ya! GAHAHAHAHA!

(Shōichirō Takatsu (高津 祥一郎) was an SNK spokesman who was depicted with a larger-than-life persona in Famitsu manga at the time.)

ALEX: What?! You're tellin' me this game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color?

K': ...Seems that way. You'll need a Neo Geo Pocket Color to play it properly.

ALEX: Wait, what?! That's all we get to say?

K': Cool your jets. We're the New Generation, right? I'm sure we'll be in the next game.

ALEX: ...

K': ...We're...

K': ...Main characters, after all...

ALEX: ...True...

BOTH: ... ... ...

[NEXT TIME]

KAEDE: Amidst the sunbeams of a mild autumn's day, I have a battle with Lilith.

LILITH: However, when Kaede-kun turns on the power, a strange old man appears on the screen.

KAEDE: To my horror, the words are slowly written out: "For use with Color"!

LILITH: Kaede-kun grows despondent as our long-awaited date ends in disaster...

LILITH: Will a solution arise to restore Kaede-kun to his once-cheerful self?!

KAEDE: Kaede, the boy who lived through the Bakumatsu era...

LILITH: And Lilith, the overwhelmingly cute succubus... Interweaving in a fleeting love story...

KAEDE: Next time on "Match of the Millennium."

LILITH: Episode 2: "A Bit of Courage and the Neo Geo Pocket Color"!

KAEDE: Your heart...is not monochrome...!

#6

KYO: This game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color!

KYO: It sucks, but you can't play it on the monochrome version.

IORI: Is that all anyone here can say, Kyo?!

IORI: We've already heard it a million times from everyone else. We get it.

KYO: (Ignoring him) If you get the color version, you'll be all set! So c'mon and play it colorful!

#7

SHERMIE: Hi~! ♥ How's everyone doing?

SHERMIE: If I can't be in the game, I'll just pop up here. ♥

SHERMIE: As you might have guessed, this game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

SHERMIE: So it just won't work with the monochrome version. ♥ Right, Yashiro? ♥ Chris? ♥

CHRIS: Uh, y-yeah... But Shermie, what's with that look?

SHERMIE: It's fan service! ♥ S-E-R-V-I-C-E. Yes? Niau?

CHRIS: Ah, o-of course... How novel...a-and fun!

YASHIRO: ...!! She's...so...CUTE!

CHRIS & SHERMIE: ... ... ...

CHIZURU: Pardon the intrusion, but...

CHIZURU: This game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

CHIZURU: Please keep in mind that it will not work with the monochrome version.

KING: Playing in color as Capcom and SNK characters appear before you...

KING: I do so love a good fight. It sure is a pity I'm not in the game...

KING: But I'm always ready to fight if my fans demand it.

KING: Write "King me, please!" on a postcard to SNK, and we'll see what happens.

CHIZURU: If you only have the monochrome version...

CHIZURU: I recommend you purchase KOF R-1...since I'm in that one. ♥

KING: ...Gimme a break...

#9

XIANGFEI: This game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color, or so I hear.

XIANGFEI: It's apparently a no-go on this monochrome version.

XIANGFEI: If you play on the Color, you can do stuff like catch these spacemen.

XIANGFEI: You'll be able to play all kinds of games!

XIANGFEI: ...All that aside, I wonder if this guy would be good to eat...

MARS PEOPLE: ...!!

#10

MORRIGAN: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

MORRIGAN: Switch to the Color, and I'll let you play with me. ♥

MORRIGAN: ...But really, I'm burning up in all these clothes...

MORRIGAN: I don't know how Bison does it...

BALROG & VEGA: ... ... ...

#11

ATHENA: This game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

FELICIA: You can't play it on the monochrome version. But don't let that discourage you. ♥

B.B. HOOD: If you get a Color and switch to that, you'll be good to go! But you have to get one!

ATHENA: Sorry about this. If you don't have one, please buy the color version so you can play!

AKARI: Yeah, come see us in color next time! We beseech you!

ALL: Thank you very much! ♥

#12

Thank you sincerely for your purchase of "Match of the Millennium."

However, this game is exclusively for use with the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

It will not work with the monochrome version. Please understand.

Now, then, some good news!

If you insert this cartridge into a Neo Geo Pocket Color...

Bam! You'll be able to play it!!

By all means, please give it a try!

MetManMas 10-09-2016 02:26 AM

Nice work, Kishi.

Parish 10-09-2016 05:53 AM

Rey, I think this may be your magnum opus.

Kishi, you rock! I was actually hoping someone would inspire themselves and translated those. Since I don't want these to get lost over time, mind if I make a "translation faq" and post it on gamefaqs? Or you could do it yourself if you want.

Thanks, that means a lot coming from you. But there's still a lot more coming, although it might not be as interesting to you since it's not about handheld gaming and I know your personal focus recently has been gravitating towards handheld gaming with Game Boy World.

Kirin 10-11-2016 08:11 AM

This is all amazing, tanks so much to both Rey and Kishi!

BEAT 10-11-2016 08:15 AM

This is super cool.

Anyone else remember the audio warnings you would get if you put a Dreamcast or Playstation game in a CD player?

Vyse, Akia and Fina of Skies of Arcadia telling you to quit your shit in what had to be the longest voice sample any of those VAs recorded for the entire game.

Patrick 10-11-2016 08:18 AM

Man, what a cool thread. Thanks for sharing!

With SotN, not only would Alucard reprimand you, but you'd get to listen to a music track that wasn't anywhere else in the game.

Dracula: "Still uttering the same nonsense. No matter. Now is the time to put aside your weak human side. And join me in REMAKING THIS WORLD!!!"

Alucard: "God, you just don't get me. I'll be in my room." *turns up loud music*

The track he's blasting is, of course, The Tragic Prince for maximum self-indulgence and butt rock air-guitaring

KCar 10-11-2016 03:24 PM

The conversation between K' and Alex is about being "main characters" is AMAZING.

This was always a highlight of otherwise dogshit anime-licensed games in those days. Gundam Battle Assault I remember had a cute little rap between Char and Amuro. And there was a funny Gekiganger III drama bit in the Saturn Mobile Battleship Nadesico game.

On the Saturn's The Horde I remember there being an audio track where a little cutesy voice would say something like "this game is only for the Sega Saturn, and should not be played in a CD player. Please remove it immediately..." and a gruff, monster voice came in "OR KISS YOUR TWEETERS GOODBYE." It was pretty funny.

The Raider Dr. Jones 10-13-2016 02:46 PM

Yeah, I wanna say the KISS YOUR TWEETERS deal was on a bunch of USA Saturn games. I remember it from Dragon Force and a couple of others.

oh wait, apparently WD introduced it on their Turbo games?
