Animal Crossing Pocket Camp: You got open world crafting game in my Animal Crossing

Nintendo's free to play Animal Crossing game is launching in late November. You can do requests for villagers you meet and they'll reward you with bells and materials. Cyrus can craft those materials into furniture that can be used to decorate your camping space, and your favorite Animal Crossing characters may just stop by and hang.

Don't have the materials for an item you really want? Don't worry, the game's freemium currency, Nook Tickets, can be used as a substitute. Also it takes several real world hours/days to complete some furniture, but you can speed things up with Nook Tickets. Tired of catching Sea Bass over and over and over? You can buy a fishing net with Nook Tickets that'll catch a ton of rarer fish! Nook Tickets are truly amazing and if you buy a lot you even get a discount.

It lost me right at the beginning with "campground," but I warmed up to the idea a bit by the end.

Sprite 10-25-2017 05:46 AM

It seems perfectly fine, certainly better than stuff like Simpsons: Tapped Out. Rumor has it they were making a game like that at first, but scrapped it because they realized those games aren't fun. This looks fun.

Though everything on display is also in New Leaf, except in New Leaf it's less annoying. Even the friendship system isn't new, it's just not a hidden stat anymore. And I'm guessing there's no Stalk Market, which is what keeps me latched on to Animal Crossing for months after I'm bored with everything else. So it looks fine, but if I get a craving I'd be better served playing New Leaf.

I do hope it does well, though, if only because it looks less evil than Fire Emblem Heroes, and I don't want every Nintendo mobile game to be gacha.

Pajaro Pete 10-25-2017 08:41 AM

yeah, based on what they've shown, the f2p elements don't seem too intrusive because animal crossing's gamelay is already based around "play a little bit each day"

but i feel like it'll come down to the actual bug/fish economy and how far you can get with those before you have to start buying nets/honey

I love this sentence.

Daikaiju 10-25-2017 08:54 AM

Better question: are we still going to get a proper AC on the Switch?

mopinks 10-25-2017 09:49 AM

yes

yes

Nodal 10-25-2017 11:40 AM

I think it's worth it for the Tom Nook jokes alone.

Ludendorkk 10-26-2017 12:18 AM

The big realization I'm coming to from this is that Animal Crossing was structured like a freemium game from the very beginning

Or rather, freemium games are structured like Animal Crossing. Were there Farmville-style timer/stamina games before 2001?

Violentvixen 11-21-2017 07:42 AM

It's up! Downloading now!

Daikaiju 11-21-2017 09:18 AM

OH GOD, THE NOOKENING IS UPON US!
We've already lost VV!

Little Sampson 11-21-2017 10:48 AM

I'm liking this way too much. But it's Animal Crossing, so that's not too surprising.

My friend code is 2691 9702 410. Name's Billy

Wendell 11-21-2017 01:13 PM

I added you, Billy. My own code is 76358175366!

Daikaiju 11-21-2017 01:45 PM

So they fall, one by one...

Wendell 11-21-2017 02:38 PM

This feels like a good advertisement for the real game, in that I can see where the annoying timer B.S. wouldnít get in the way. Iíve never played any of them before!

Sprite 11-21-2017 04:44 PM

I'm not really feeling it so far. It's definitely well-made, and I like how much it pulls from Happy Home Academy, but there's a certain je ne sais quoi it lacks by using tiny contained areas instead of a unique, randomized village. And, of course, the persistent connection is so annoying. I thought maybe I could hang out and fish while on the subway and away from a connection, but the game seems to stop spawning fish after a while until you leave the area and come back, probably to force an auto-save.

Speaking of which, when the game says "don't worry about saving," it's lying. If you're in-between auto saves and get pulled away from the app, when it restarts it will forget everything after the last auto-save. You only lose a couple minutes, but it would be pretty crappy to catch a rare fish and then lose it because of a connection error.

But my ID is 3610 6107 466, if you want to add me. It definitely has better community functions than Fire Emblem Heroes, that's for sure.

Pajaro Pete 11-21-2017 08:13 PM

does this game have server trouble or is it just not playing well with my shitty wifi

Sprite 11-21-2017 08:54 PM

I'm definitely getting a lot of connection errors. Probably launch server stress.

I've never played an Animal Crossing before. I went in and got all the starting animal friends up to level 3 and had them all visit my place, so I have 5 guests now. I played for a surprisingly long time and felt like there was still way more crap I could do; it'll be a challenge to keep abreast of this without sinking too much time into it.

Jeanie 11-22-2017 07:05 AM

47727555622. In game name is Jeanie, that's a shocker right? Not sure what friends do for each other here, but I'm more than willing to help if I can.

Sprite 11-22-2017 07:16 AM

Everyone's in on the con this time.

I will note that in the real game you have to wait for stuff too. Cyrus takes a few hours and trees take a couple days. But there's so much to do in the full town it feels quite different!

Yeah, this is pretty bad right now, but should lighten up soon I hope.

Adding everyone now, my ID:

VlntVixen

Also My Nintendo rewards are up! Free leaf tickets and various materials for coins.

Pajaro Pete 11-22-2017 08:06 AM

Haha, it's cute and self aware! That makes me want to spend real life money on leaf tickets!

Sprite 11-22-2017 08:20 AM

I used the River Net and got four fish, then used the Ocean Net and got two fish and two shells. So, thanks for saving me thirty seconds?

Dan Moreton 11-22-2017 08:55 AM

Been playing this a little previously in the Australian version, it's nice to finally have it linked to my nintendo account without saying I'm in Australia lol. Feel free to add me 42659656492 I'm Dan on there.

The Special Character items seem like a rip off. They cost a ridiculous amount of tickets and the characters are just cosmetic. No new features, no friendship, they're just kind of there. Apparently KK plays his guitar but not specific songs.

Expanding the crafting slots seems to be the best use of tickets at the moment.

John 11-22-2017 01:00 PM

Added most of you, will finish adding more in a bit. 4181-9025-018, Rademan over here.

Itís a good Skinner box, will keep my interest for a week fulfilling requests and making numbers go up. Customizing my campsite has no draw for me, so itís all about the numbers.

Paul le Fou 11-22-2017 01:36 PM

That feel when you craft a somewhat expensive/long-term item, the last one needed to invite a new guest, and then you look up and realize you'd already started one so now you've got six hours to wait for two of the same thing D:
