Zenimax bought by Microsoft

It's suddenly dawning on me that the only game that's gonna force me to finally upgrade my PC is Elder Scrolls 6. I've never preferred playing ES games on a console, so if it winds up being any kind of XBox console exclusive I don't think I'll care (since it will come out on PC no matter what).

If I had to make a totally blind guess, I'd say the strategy is less "now you HAVE to buy Xbox to play [MUCH BELOVED SERIES]" and more "okay now we make money on all sales of Much beloved series."

also, "[MUCH BELOVED SERIES] now will appear day-one on GamePass"

I mean, MS's traditional strength is in getting people to buy software n services, not hardware

their moves with GamePass have felt like GamePass is the true revenue generator, not Xbox hardware

they've been moving to a more platform-agnostic philosophy to getting revenue, and this might be the logical extension of that

The Xbox is for people who don't want to bother building a gaming PC, yet want most of the benefits of PC gaming (you can plug in a mouse + kb, and most games will recognize it), yes.

I read this thread title this morning and just completely passed over it. "I dunno what Zenimax is, idgaf if MS bought it."

I read up later at random what Zenimax is on accident, and was like, "Ohhhh... that's kinda a big deal then, probably. I still dgaf."

There's not a single IP of theirs I would miss if I suddenly lost access to them, but I'll be able to play everything PC so this is a big w/e to me.

I hope Sony keeps well away from Capcom thanks
Sony would probably be better stewards of most of the IPs of Capcom than they are, tbh. Sony wouldn't do to Dragon's Dogma, or Breath of Fire, or Ace Attorney, or MML what Capcom has done.

I couldn't disagree much harder. Sony don't generally keep franchises around long. Remember Resistance: Fall of Man? Wild Arms? Ape Escape? Lemmings? Siren? Sly Cooper? Syphon Filter? Arc the Lad? Because Sony doesn't.

Sony remembered Lemmings long enough to make a F2P game out of the property.

But yeah, Sony generally does a poor job of sticking by a series for the most part.

Sony can't be bothered to keep old games in franchises they still have running in print, hope you didn't want to play the first 2 inFamous games again. Or any God of War prior to the new one other than, inexplicably 3. Sony's answer to their legacy content is typically a vague gesture at PS Now, it would be fair to say they are the worst stewards of their legacy content of the three major console manufacturers.

Yeah - I think this is pretty rad news, for me personally. I think Gamepass is phenominal. I've played a lot of smaller stuff I wouldn't have necessarily bought full price and its been super eye opening. My top pass games are:
1. Gears 5 - New game is basically 6 months of pass, so gears paid for itself a million years ago
2. Streets of Rage 4 - this had xplatform play on PC and XBX versions. Possible game of the year
3. Battletoads - it's opk, but my son LOVED it
4. Demon's Tilt - secret indie sequel to Devil's Crush
5. Blazing Chrome - I loved this so much I went and bough Odallus and Oniken
6. Wasteland 3 - I hated WL2 so much, was not going to bother to even play, but boy am I glad I did

I LOVE Fallout 3, NV and 4. 76 i've tried due to pass, and it's OK, but Fallout whatever, Starfield and Elder 6. yeah.. That makes pass super cool. Not to mention the Tango Gameworks stuff. I'd love to play Evil Within 1-2 again.

For me this is great.

Maybe, we don't know. MS has only said that future games will arrive on various consoles on a case by case basis, aside from a few currently in-production ones that have existing exclusivity contracts.

Yeah, I would hate to see Sony acquire a company with legacy IP like Capcom and/or Konami. I mean, sure, we'll see new entries in series like Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and possibly Castlevania or Dragon's Dogma; but all the smaller IP would be just as dead under Sony as they are under their original owners.

(clears throat) They're going to put Elder Scrolls Blades as the hidden easter egg in Excel 2022. Thank you.

Microsoft just paid nearly twice what Disney paid for Star Wars, to put it in perspective

Anyways talking about the acqusition of Japanese pubs is probably premature because 1) Neither Sony nor Nintendo can probably afford them 2) there's a very high legal barrier for foreign companies to buy Japanese ones

does this mean skyrim 2 is a gonna be an microsoft exclusive

I think the official position right now is, "We want you to be concerned enough about this possibility to think twice about buying a Playstation if you care about any Bethesda games."

While there's little here of particular interest to me with regards to the libraries they have (I've been curious about the new Doom... Commander Keen, maybe?), and I generally don't like companies swallowing each other up (and that may not even be permanent, re: Bungie)...

If this helps close the gap between Xbox and PlayStation, then I'm in favor of it.

And the original Xbox controller was based really heavily on the Dreamcast's to the point where prototypes had VMUs, Sega wanted the Xbox to be back compatible with the Dreamcast and the follow up to the Naomi board - the Chihiro - was an Xbox with GD-ROMs and more memory.

There's a lot of history between Microsoft and Sega so I could see it happening, but these tweets aren't it.
