Zenimax bought by Microsoft

did i do all of that?

There goes any hope for New Vegas being ported to Switch. Probably wouldn't have happened anyway, but damn.

It might still happen, after all both Oris and Minecraft made it. I don't rate Deathloop's chances on PS5 though...

Dunno about that considering a) Even first-party Xbox titles like Ori (both games) and Cuphead made it to Switch b) If it was in development then I could see prior contracts needing to be fullfilled (much like Hellblade and likely Doom Eternal).

I mean, it probably wasn't in development, but shows what I know - I didn't know Ori and Cuphead were owned by Microsoft.

Actually, Deathloop is going to still happen, they're almost certainly contracted to deliver it. I'm not a fan of consolidation, I remember the lengthy list of studios EA devoured.

I don't think we actually know how this Is going to play out yet; MS bought Mojang and you can still play Minecraft on everything.

This is absolutely staggering news to drop the day before XBox preorders drop while people are still feeling the pain of the botching PS5 preorder rollout. If XBox preorders are smooth and available, this could easily be the thing that, coupled with the rest of the things that Microsoft has done right, gets them off on the right foot while Sony stumbles a bit, securing a lead that could last the generation.

No doubt Phil Spencer is standing behind the Walmart Twitter guy, eyes bulging, daring him to touch the keyboard and announce early preorders.

Weird to consider that Bethesda is such a fucking hell pit, that getting bought by Microsoft might actually make things better, for both the customers and the workers.

I actually wouldn't rule out things appearing on Switch because of this.

Microsoft and Nintendo's relationship is... weird. Like they're technically competitors in the console market sure, but Microsoft is surprisingly cognizant of the fact that a switch and an Xbox don't really fill the same niche, and seems more than happy to give things switch releases when the option presents itself.

Is it weird that the first thing I thought is "Well, Bethesda basically only makes first person games, so of course it would be more at home on Xbox" ?

I can't help but notice how MS is double stacking their IP portfolio with similar/competing games. They now own Elder Scrolls and Fallout, but they already own Avowed and Outer Worlds (and Fable). They now own Doom, Rage, Quake and Wolfenstein, but they already own Halo and Gears.

If I had to make a totally blind guess, I'd say the strategy is less "now you HAVE to buy Xbox to play [MUCH BELOVED SERIES]" and more "okay now we make money on all sales of Much beloved series."

Yeah Deathloop will definitely come out on PS5. Outer Worlds was released on PS4 after Microsoft bought Obsidian.

Still, this is a pretty big deal.

“Bethesda and Obsidian are now sister studios. Fallout New Vegas 2 is now actually a possibility”

What a strange time in history to want anything to do with Bethesda.

Basically this, Todd Howard is a fuckstick, but now he has to answer to people who are probably not going to be super keen on Bethesda endlessly reusing the gamebryo engine...or trying to make an MMO with the gamebryo engine.

This could be the end of Spider-Man Bethesda's long history of hilariously bug-riddled hot messes.

I mean the Xbox Game Studios logo at the end of Ori being shown in the Direct didn't tip you off?

I hope Sony keeps well away from Capcom thanks

Yeah, aside from Double Fine, most of Microsoft’s spree of late in buying its way into having a first party IP library comparable to Nintendo and Sony haven’t been things that interest me that much. I’m more worried about the eventual reprisal move from Sony. I could see them trying to gobble up Capcom or Square Enix.

We'll be laughing when Disney buys MS and merges it with its subsidiary Marvel's Sony in 2045, bringing all IP mankind has ever produced under one roof. Then the prophecy will be fulfilled and the sleeper will walk again and feast upon the memory of Man.

I've no doubt games like Doom and Skyrim will still be put on everything, and I'm sure Microsoft realizes the value of having the MMOs on other platforms. But while I know this'll be a boon for Bethesda's prospects of actually completing a game and bug testing, I can't say I'm completely thrilled about so many wRPG devs being under the wing of one console maker.

Like, I know Minecraft's on everything and the Ori games and Cuphead are on Switch, but stuff like that feels more like the exception than the rule. Minecraft was already multiplatform and is too big to limit to one console space, and some 2D indie darlings are likely a lot easier and less costly to port than something like Halo.

Were I a betting man I'd say the only titles MS cares about flexing exclusivity on are things like TES6, something to give the Series X a big marquee game every few years.
