You Will Be Knocked Down! Final Phebruary

In the spirit of Megamas and Castleween I'd like to inaugurate next month as Final February! Wherein Tyrants play Final Fantasy games in order to preserve the Crystals and SAVE the World!

Instead of defeating Robot Masters or defeating Draculas in the month of February it is our task to defeat as many Chaoses, Emperors, Clouds, Zeromuses, ExDeaths, Kefkas, Sephiroths, Undying, etc as possible.

But, because we don't want to be Nintendo-centric you may also gain glory (and points) by defeating Dark Falz from the Phantasy Star franchise. You may be able to gain glory (and points) by defeating other final bosses in RPGs. You are more likely to succeed in this if your RPG has elemental crystals, airships, slimes, or silent protagonists.

Some general guidelines

1. Play as many F(PH)antasys between February 1 and when February 28.
2. Gain one glory for every final boss defeated and 1/2 glory for every crystal saved. (If the crystal explodes you didn't save it)
3. Give yourself an additional Glory for every F(Ph)antasy you complete beyond the first.
4. Give yourself an extra 4 glory if you complete every F(Ph)antasy on a console

If we reach 50 Glory then the world has been saved. If not then we're stuck in a time loop and have to re-live 2020 forever or the world was destroyed by Chaos or Kefka.

My plan, as of right now, is to play through FF1 and FF Mystic Quest. That seems realistic for me.

What if you're forced to trade it for your girlfriend's life? Or if you save it only to have it recaptured?

And is magicite the same as a crystal?

This objective is more complicated than it appears at first glance! Consider:
  • The Sega Master System, upon which (to my knowledge) the only F(Ph)antasy available is Phantasy Star 1? That's a lot of glory for one game!
  • The NES, which saw one Final Fantasy... but there are three on the Famicom. Can you claim the bonus 4 glory for beating FF1? What if you play it in Japanese?
  • Spin-offs and ports/remasters - to claim this bonus glory for the GBA, would Final Fantasy Tactics Advance be the only requirement (as it's the only one originally released there? Or could it be optional since it's a spinoff, while FF1&2 DoS, and 4/5/6 Advance are all required, along with Phantasy Star Collection?
  • Does one need to play it on the console in question (or a device emulating it)? Can a port or remaster be substituted? What about a remake (FF3 & 4 DS vs NES/SNES)

Is Magicite elemental? If you trade it and then regain it you get the 1/2 point.
What if the crystals are destroyed, but later, through your efforts, you manage to reform them?

Thank you for engaging my oddly specific hypotheticals.

What if, hypothetically speaking, one were to alight ORBs instead of saving crystals?

Sounds good. Haven't played through VI in awhile, and still need to complete the fancy version of XII.

NO V, I'M NOT DOING AN EXHAUSTIVE PLAYTHROUGH OF YOU AGAIN DESPITE HOW COMPELLING YOU ARE.

Are you ready to save crystals/orbs, defeat EVIL, and Save the World/Universe? Starts tomorrow!

I’m playing 8. There’s only one crystal but it’s a big ‘un

I'm not saying anyone should play Quest: Fantasy Challenge (GBC), but apparently you do collect heaps of crystals. It's a puzzle game and not an RPG, so perhaps it doesn't count. Plus, everyone knows you secretly want to play Final Fantasy Adventure on the same system anyway.

In conjunction with this, I decided to try to give the Four Job Fiesta a try, as I've played through FFV a good 3-4 times, but never with the constraints of locked jobs. Coincidentally, they're holding a flash event for coronavirus relief - it's a set party, so I don't have the full chaos of, say, Blue Mage/Time Mage/Beastmaster/Dragoon, but rest assured it is plenty wonky and it's been fun to navigate plinking Garula to death with a bunch of white mages. I did start about a week ago, but all I have for my troubles so far is four exploded crystals, so no harm no foul.

I've also started playing Crisis Core for the first time in earnest - I spent maybe 6 hours with it about 12 years ago but have been playing it on the living room TV for the past little while. It's a really fascinating game, aesthetically and mechanically. I had assumed, back in the day, that the game was a money-grab for portable systems, but in retrospect, it absolutely isn't! It's got a bonkers story, but it's both briskly-told and (relatively) internally consistent. The mission-based gameplay allows for plenty of downtime/grind-to-your-heart's-content between longer assignments. The most pleasant surprise, though, has been its visual/storytelling consistency with both FFVII and FFVIIR. I loved FFVIIR's clear passion for the world of the original, and that same passion shines through in Crisis Core. It's nowhere near as densely populated or rendered, but the aesthetics of this PSP game somehow connect back directly to the original and forward to the remake. I have no idea what the next chapter of the remake will look like, but whether or not it explicitly calls back to the events of Crisis Core, I'm really thankful I'm finally playing it.

Final Fantasy 1 Randomizer down. Using this "Free Enterprise" flagset: https://finalfantasyrandomizer.com/...DHTkjrPqGr4s-wrMW4lS7IKqw0zvOtIHQMiZJIir!mqJD

Started with a Fighter and a Black Mage (huge mistake), recruited a Red Mage for killing Kairy and a Thief for killing Litch who immediately promoted to ninja as Sarda had the TAIL. It was a mistake because I found Fade, Exit, Life and Cure4 were all level 1-2, so an early red would have been better than my black. Did have a level 1 Nuke in Onrac, as well, but we had to treasure hunt for the Ship and Cannal first (no Cannoe).

Final boss was 2x Phantom + 4x Litch, which go down fast with four people casting Nuke/Fade.
  • 4 Orbs Lit
  • 1 Final Boss Slain
For a total of 3 points.

Isn't that alternate final boss the opposite - 2 Lich and 4 Phantom? (I believe people in the FF1 randomizer community refer to it as 'The Fundead Pack'.)
Yeah, think you're right. Two turns of Nuke/Fade + A Masmune and Excalibur attack each on the remaining Litches did the job before I really needed to think about it much, so...
