I'm annoyed. When are they supposed to turn on the faucet for this one? It's almost four 'o clock in the morning and I can't play my TMNT pre-order on the Switch, nor can I download it on my Xbox One. I thought it'd be available at midnight on the nose, yet I remain in Turtle limbo.

I feel this pain. I have it wishlisted on PSN; still haven't received the availability notification.

Edit: According to the PSN page, this goes live at in 10 minutes, at 8:00AM CST. Didn't check for Switch.

It's live now on PSN! And I'm annoyed I have to go through my whole dang workday before I can kick shell.

I've downloaded it and I've played the first two levels. It is exceptional. Now I'm staring at my clock, counting the minutes until my lunch break so I can play again.

Beat the story mode once with Donatello, then played through arcade mode with two friends later in the evening. Game is everything I wanted and it was clearly made by people who loved Turtles in Time as much as the rest of us.

Question for people who've done story mode already (no real info here but spoilering just in case): How does getting each character's ending work? If you start a new game in story mode after beating it once, it says it erases your progress (which, to me, means whatever character progression you've made). Do you just pick a new character and play the final stage again since the map doesn't reset? Or do you have to play all the levels with them anyway? Am I misunderstanding the progress thing and it'll keep your leveled up characters if you start a new game?

Eh, that's not a big deal, they're pretty hard to miss anyway. I'm mostly worried about losing a fully leveled character.

Exquisite. I stayed up to 3am playing through story mode then immediately started a new game. Certainly the best belt-them-up I’ve ever played. I love bean a turtle!

The combat is so satisfying. Every hit really feels like it connects hard with the enemies. Also the dodge roll is great for getting out of situations that felt like you just had to take hits in past TMNT games. Loving everything about it so far. Also I can't get the first level's music out of my head.

Oh wow, this is pretty good, isn't it? I mean I bought it based on Stu's review but I like it more than I thought I would, one level in haha

This game has packaged and sold my own childhood to me more effectively than any other piece of media in recent memory.

That was pretty much my experience. Besides the incredibly minor problems I had with it (the challenge pop-ups piss me off a little - tell me if I succeed, don't tell me when I fail if I'm not trying!), it just hit every note I wanted it to hit, then continue to hit notes throughout.

Yeah, I got that pop up you mentioned in your review for failing to not get hit. Oh well! It'd be nice to be able to turn them off, I don't really care about achievements/challenges anyway (you may even be able to do this, I only had time to play one level before work so I didn't look in the options).

We did a family run of 4 players through the first 5 levels or so this morning, before our 6yo got bored and ruined it for everyone by putting his controller down but not telling anyone. Very fun, and I like the resurrection mechanic quite a lot, but it's tough to pull off in boss fights. I wish it did the TMNT II NES approach of letting you choose another character after you die, instead of having to drop into the Pause menu to Leave the current game, which breaks up the action considerably.

This nails the aesthetic of "90's movie theater arcade game", but I wasn't expecting the depth of some of the controls/attacks. We skipped the super long attacks tutorial, so were just button mashing, and all would shout out which buttons do what actions as we figured them out. Fun game!

This is great.

We started it last night and got to the chase on the bridge (the third level, I think?) and it's tons of fun. Also I love that Irma shows up, I'd forgotten a lot about her character.

You can choose a new character when you continue, but not when you die.

I know if you reset you can choose to keep it but collectable progress gets reset.
Can you confirm this? I can't find any info about what progress gets kept if you start a new story mode game. I want to play it with all the characters, but I don't want to lose the time spent leveling them if they're just going to get reset.

Oh yes. I reset my story run and it asked if I wanted to keep my character progress and I said yes. That said, all the collectables and challenges do get reset.

Beat it today on Okay. Final bosses felt, um, not hard, which is annoying. Though that might be because Okay isn't that hard. Might try another round on Gnarly later.

Played this. Was kind of afraid to, as I worried that it wasn't going to live up to all the praise from reviewers and fans. It does, though. It's not a carbon copy of the old Konami beat 'em ups, looking, sounding, and playing a bit different, but those differences don't detract from the experience or make it any less faithful to the franchise. The Konami games of old exude a sense of dogged dedication to the design in spite of an unfamiliarity with the license. The designers didn't totally "get" TMNT, but they did their homework to make sure the game felt like a faithful extension of the franchise.

Shredder's Revenge is just as dedicated to a quality product, but feels like it came from insiders. It's not just faithful, but enthusiastic in its reverence. You imagine the creators sitting around a table, spit-balling ideas, suggesting general concepts and set pieces and cameos from the show and bringing all their geeky fan canon fantasies to life. This wasn't an assignment from the corporation that bought the license... the makers of Shredder's Revenge wanted to make this. Badly.

Yesterday I started playing this alone, and @Lumber Baron joined my party during the third level. However when we went to continue today there was no option to continue the game, it was as if we hadn't played at all. We tried logging in again as just me and nope, no record of anything.

Was there a way to save the game I didn't see? Or are you supposed to beat Story mode in one sitting? I hope not!

Edit: Huh, restarted my Xbox and continue is an option again. Maybe it just bugged out earlier today?

Played Arcade mode tonight with 5 randos. I'm glad the option is there but six players is chaos, especially with how flashy the game can get. I think it felt best with three, possibly four.

Nibbling around the edges of this one. I'm three stages in, and was kind of annoyed with the hoverboarding segment. Would you just let me HIT those guys hovering above me? Sheesh. I just kept using the attack + jump uppercut move; it's the only thing that would reliably hit the soldiers in the jetpack chairs.

On the plus side, the game has rekindled an appreciation for Donatello. Not so much as a fighter- he's slower than the other turtles on account of that big honkin' stick- but as a character. The voice is just perfect for him. Barry Gordon gives him this adorkable nasal voice that's a perfect match for his personality. He's like Brainy Smurf, if Brainy Smurf was likeable and not a jerk.

Beat the story mode. It's good, but I guess I'm not as enamored with it as everyone else. The level design in Turtles in Time was just more interesting to me with the different time eras, whereas this one retreads the tried and true "beat em up set in New York City or an analogous fictional US city" trope for the most part. The Dimension X part was nice, but that was all of three levels.

I love the game because it hits all my nostalgia buttons. The "story" is just an excuse to beat up foot soldiers. I played the hell out of TMNT 3 and Turtles in Time, and this is like candy for me. Seeing TMNT3 bosses, the Rat Kings, um, throne, those stupid boards on the boardwalk, all of it is like being a 12 year old again. The only thing that feels off is the throws and I think it's just a bit different from Time that it's throwing off my muscle memory. Doesn't help the charge doesn't set up the throw like it did there, or at least not the way I want it to.

I did finally watch the tutorial bit and realized I could recharge the super meter with taunts which is something I didn't know. Slowly working my way through the challenges (some are way easier than others) and the characters. I've got two completions so far and working on my third.

Which one is TMNT3? Was that the Manhattan Project on the NES? I would have liked that one better if it wasn't so hamstrung by the hardware. Probably would have been a better candidate for release on the Sega Genesis, honestly.

But yes, this game is a total nerdgasm in the best possible way. It's one of those games that makes up for its failings by being such a faithful and enthusiastic, well, tribute to the franchise. It's like The Simpsons: Road Rage, but while Road Rage was a pretty average Crazy Taxi clone at its core, this is actually pretty well developed for a beat 'em up. You've got both Super NES "into the camera" throws and Genesis "beat 'em against the ground like a dusty rug*" throws, and they have distinct button inputs, unless Turtles in Time or Hyperstone Heist where you got in close and hoped for the best. There are counters (which I'm terrible at) and evasions and ukemi and super moves and Simpsons-style team up attacks and taunts and who knows what else. It adds more depth for more experienced players, but younger or less skilled players can go "wham wham wham" with normal attacks and be just as happy. It's fantastic TMNT merchandise and a pretty good belt scroller, and that's all I really required.

* possible on Super NES, but easier on Genesis. You... kind of had no choice since the other option wasn't there

Oh yeah, if you skim over the tutorial you miss this, it's huge. We've made a habit of filling our super bars before moving to the next screen when we think a boss is coming up.
