Yo ho ho, he took a bite of live action Gum Gum! Talking about Netflix's One Piece

The flying skulls have different designs, nice. I'm looking forward to it, but I'm a bit scared that it might mean more breaks for the manga.

Still, very curious how they will adapt Alabasta.

Wapol, huh? Dorry and Broggy? How many episodes are we getting? Not trying to sound negative, I have full trust that it will be of good quality, I'm now just really curious about this season.

So far I've been very happy to see Dastmalchian when he's popped up, so this is great news as far as I'm concerned.

I have been assuming we're getting the entire Baroque Works arc but perhaps what with Loguetown still to do, that's not reasonably doable in a single season. Maybe they'll do all the pre-Arabasta stuff this season and end on a cliffhangery setup that leads into Arabasta directly.

To me it depends on how many episodes are in the season. If it's another 8 then it'll be hard to fit all of Baroque Works in the season. If they get 10 then it could be done:

1: Loguetown / Reverse Mountain
2: Laboon
3: Whiskey Peak
4-5: Little Garden
6-7: Drum Island
8-10: Alabasta

Squeezing Alabasta into 3 episodes would be tricky but they can cut back on a lot of the travel and possibly do it.

I had assumed they might just go straight to Alabasta, skipping Little Garden and Drum, and just change Alabasta enough to introduce the necessary characters there.

Giving Alabasta it's own season, the third one (as Pombar suggested), sounds like the most sensible plan. I just can't imagine it being done in 3 episodes, or however few there are.

They did do some very harsh cuts to the first season's adaptations of arcs, and Arabasta does get accused of dragging with too much setup and a lot of back and forth time-wasting in the conclusion, so it could be possible I suppose. Especially if they want to keep the pirate journeying a big part of the show's identity and didn't want to lock a whole season to a single monotonous setting quite this early.

Pff, which villains are slandering my beloved Alabasta?

I mean, they won't have much of a choice later on, I guess. Water 7 is the first insanely long arc, going for over 100 chapters, if I remember correctly. Can't imagine how this could be done, without spending all their time on it and Enies Lobby. The longer arcs will be a challenge in any case.

A shame, because in particular the traveling did indeed give the show a special feel. I think seeing the ocean again and again was an important reason why it felt like One Piece to me.

One of the big time-savers seems to be the fights. They are having to be much more reserved in their fight choreography due to the limits of live action over animation, and huge chunks of those long arcs are multi-episode fights.

Mrs. Merry Christmas and Mr. 4 against Chopper and Usopp will be interesting.

I'm very curious how they'll do Chopper.

So season 2 will essentially not tell a whole story. Which is still probably the best way to do it. I think I like that decision.

Peggy Bundy as Kuleha could work. Looking forward to seeing her.

Katey Sagal is great in everything she's shown up in imo. And it's cool she's getting to do an anime adaptation because she also does a lot of voice acting and that seems like a Neat combination to me.

Katey Segal is a fantastic choice, yeah. Looking forward to that.

And I think leaving Arabasta till Season 3 makes a lot of sense. More breathing room for this multi-island stretch, and makes S2 a setup arc for a big payoff in S3.

EDIT: Apparently:

I do like the actor! But seems a little odd to cast a South Asian in a role that was extremely Arab-inspired.

Thinking about it more, making a whole season, mainly to set up Alabasta, seems like a pretty cool thing. I guess they will add Smoker into the arcs, similar to how they used Garp in S1, so they can have an overarching story for the season.

But still, really nice. Alabasta is the big thing in the beginning of the Grand Line. It makes me happy that they are ready to wait, instead of rushing there.

I think I'm most curious about Little Garden. I want to see Dorry and Brogy.

Yeah Sendhil was great in Heroes back in the day.

Meanwhile I'm unreasonably amused that Harelik is playing Hiriluk. What weird celestial convergence made that happen?

And another!

And another less expected one! I guess they'll actually give him a scene in Loguetown then, rather than flashback to him in 10 years' time.

Chopper sighting!

Looks like they're doing the CG thing, hope he's not too expensive. Don't want netflix to cancel it before it gets a third season...

Muppet Chopper would be amazing, and I feel like it would fit so great to One Piece in general, and the weirdness of that series.
Can't imagine it happen, wouldn't go down well. Which shouldn't matter, it's a Netflix show, I would be surprised if we got past Alabasta.

I wonder how they will do Brook, if we get there. And honestly, Thriller Bark as a whole.

But the bit we can see looks good. Curious for the face now.

That was fun! Except that, now, I want an episode that's just them having a sleepover, whatever this means on a ship. Just an episode of them hanging out and having fun.

Dang I keep forgetting it's not till 2026.

I appreciate he looks modeled after his original design, and not as he looks now after decades of gradual mascot-ification. I was worried we'd get a shorter, more bulbous Chopper.

Yeah, I like that he looks like this. Not like a teddy, but like someone who has experienced pain. The way he looks is really well done, I think.

Glad they're leaning in to the fantastic, even more than season 1 did. And that season 3 confirmation makes me happy, we should at least get to the end of Baroque Works and Alabasta then.

It's been a while since I read Alabasta and it makes me wonder how long that story will be in live-action (like, it's long but I remember a lot of that is fights, which are shorter in live action). And I also wonder how if they get to it, how big Skypeia will be since it is a long story but feels like they might want to speed a lot of that up.

This looked great. I still love it, whenever they are outside, directly under the sky. At least from that impression, it looks like they lost nothing.

Not Drum, though! I wonder, if they leave that one out, and bring Chopper in in another way. Which would be a shame, but also give them more space for the rest.

Anyway, looking forward to it.
