Y'all Red e For This?: Top 32 & 64-Bit Video Game Nomination Thread

I put in my list. I am not happy with my list, but it is a list, and I like all the games on it. The first 5 or so games could have honestly been put in any order, as they were all options 1A through 1E. And the last 5 games on my list could have been subbed out for a good 30 different games but hard choices needed to be made and I just decided to give up after a certain point.

I had three parts on my list:

1) Games that I have deep nostalgia for
2) Games that I find very good
3) Games that I enjoy plus have some nostalgia for, but less than gamew from the top

Within these categories, I only vaguely put them in order.

yeah, this was a real tough list to rank. I gave up near the top. Some of these games are my GOATs.

It's a good thing the point separation is so small at the top.

I just figured out 25 games I thought should be on it, then did the ol' "would I rather play this or this right now?" thing all the way down the list.

Some of my favorite pieces of media that I love the most and had the biggest personal impact on me, I have almost zero desire to ever actually experience in full again. Some stuff just doesn't have the same replay value, but that doesn't mean I love them any less. Especially when it comes to obtuse, 32bit RPGs that pad out 20 hours of brilliant story into 90 hours of grindy monotonous gameplay.

I wouldn't have been able to rank the games at all, without these three categories, it was way too hard. And yes, there is more to these games than just my motivation to replay them. Memories like "Staying up till 5 AM on a Saturday with a friend, to play through GAME" or "makes me remember Christmas, when I was 12, and my sister came to visit from the city" makes GAME super important to me, and gives me feels, independant of my desire to replay them. I mean, I want to replay them all! I needed another metric.

To be clear, if that works for you, totally fine. I just wanted to explain my thought process here.

Just a heads up: The deadline is 11:59 PM PST tonight, but if you manage to slip your submission in before I start working on the list tomorrow, I will accept it. I will post in this thread when I am officially for realsies no longer accepting submissions tomorrow.

Oh no, I get that. I wasn't trying to undermine or invalidate your thought process, this is all 110% subjective! Sorry for the insinuations. Just remarking on how different everyone's thinking is, and how it's probably a reflection of how we all consume games differently.

I just kind of accept that tomorrow the list could be totally different, but this is how I felt today, in this moment, and that kinda sees me through the paralysis of "is Mario 64 better or worse than Symphony of the Night?" (It's worse. Or at least it was this time.)

I mean, I missed a lot of the big games of the era (I've only played 2 Castlevanias). I didn't exactly have a tone of personal cash so I went with the N64. I feel like that's the era where either I was playing games a little less or the games I did play weren't worth remembering. But I did scrounge up a list and it helps I played a lot of the games after the era.

My list is in! Platform nomination breakdown as follows: 9 PS1, 5 N64, 5 PC, 3 Arcade, and single votes for Saturn, Jaguar, and 3DO.

I will give you a hint to my obligatory kusoge #25: 🪠🚫👔

Plunge no shirts, huh.

My list ended up super heavily skewed to the console I owned at the time - PS1: 18, N64: 3, MacOS: 2, Jaguar: 1, Arcade: 1

All my 25 games are from the N64 and the PS1. I have never used any of the other consoles that were listed.

I made an effort to include some games that I don't necessarily feel like revisiting, or have even finished playing through once, but I felt they were important enough to me and in general for this generation gaming that I wanted to include them. I don't typically have that mindset when I make these lists, so that was different for me.

Mine are almost all PS1 titles, although several also have Saturn versions. But I do have a few unique Saturn games, three N64 games, and a PC game (with an inferior PS1 port).

my list is quite ps1 biased, with 17 (2/3!) of the games either originally released to the platform, or ported from arcade. if i remove the latter, i have 12 games i'd consider "playstation games", though a couple have saturn ports i've never played, 9 "arcade games" (a few with saturn ports as well), 3 n64 games, and 1 native saturn title.

it's an era of pc gaming i'm not nearly as familiar with, ultimately. a couple of things got close to my list, but in the end i had to go with the stuff i've been continually captivated by or really felt like had a major influence on me

For me it's:

PS1: 18-19 (depends on how you want to count Grandia)
N64: 2
Saturn: 1-2
PC: 3

I probably spent just as much time playing PC games as console games during this era, but 80% of that PC gaming time was spent on literally just one game. (Bet y'all can't guess which one.)

I had 12 Saturn games, 10 PS1, 9 arcade, and 1 PC. That totals more than 25 because several of them were multiplatform, and actually I’ve probably underestimated how many had ports. Most of my gaming at the time was either Saturn or arcade, so the PS1 is largely stuff I came back to later.

Ooh, I didn't think of breaking mine down that way. Looks like:

Mac/PC*: 9
N64: 5
PS1: 4
Arcade**: 6
3DO: 1

*While making my list there were games I swore I played on Mac but I couldn't confirm a release for anything other than PC so they're combined here.
**I confirmed the ports and timing met the criteria when I made the list but didn't write that down. Arcade is mainly how I remember playing these.

I had 11 multiplatform games, of which 6 were originally arcade games, and of which 9 appeared on the PS1! (3 on N64, 5 on Saturn.)

For console exclusives, I had 6 PS1, 5 N64, 2 Saturn, and 1 arcade (that technically did get ports, but all but one home port was to later generations and the one of this gen was different enough that it's kinda bad).

I'm not totally sure what all this says about my taste other than "I still viewed the arcade as viable during this generation."

Only two of mine were arcade titles, but I became familiar with them through their console ports.

I'm going to be fascinated how the balance of N64 and PS1 shakes out. I was always a Nintendo guy, but all the RPGs going to Sony meant that there was always going to be a betrayal in the cards (even if I did also eventually snag an N64 so I could play Ocarina).
