Okay, @Issun one more question and I'll leave you alone: Sega CD, yea or nay?

Cool, thanks!

goes off to vote for Bubsy 3D and Tobal No. 1

The whole PS1 gen was basically the apex of my ability to devote personal time to gaming, and also happened during those extremely formative years where everything is coated in nostalgia, so this is going to be a god damned hard list to make.

While I have no shortage of admiration for the Playstation 1, my list was overstuffed with FPSes and N64 games. You other crazy cowboys out there better back me up.

I'm actually ending up with an at least somewhat diverse list, at least past my top 5, since I didn't want to just put down Square's entire catalog of the era, and PS1 does have a lot of fun weird little games on it (the kind of stuff that would show up as indie DL-only games today, probably, but of course that model didn't exist back then), plus I remembered some of Bungie's MacOS stuff fits in the time period, plus I dabbled in a couple other consoles.

Gah, apparently a few arcade games I was thinking of came out in late 1995! I thought it was 1996 but realized that's because a new arcade opened near where I was living in 1996 and I just assumed those were new cabinets. Bah.

Edit: Also a few came out in 2001 that I thought were earlier, bummer. I was excited to write about Taiko no Tatsujin, why didn't you release that a year earlier Namco? *shakes fist toward the past*

Double edit: Long shot, but does anyone know if there's a website that archives what arcade cabinets were in various arcades? I'm having trouble figuring out the exact ones I played in a couple cases and these arcades are closed and likely never even had websites. Seems possible someone is logging that as a passion project...

I pretty much stuck to N64/PS1 games including ports. The hardware is so varied as far as what arcade games and PC games were doing during the same years that it seemed like the only way to do it.

Yeah, what I'm trying to do but am having trouble narrowing down which "arcade game with car-shaped cabinets that a bunch of my friends and I could play together" it was. Since I didn't own the consoles I'm trying to confirm which ones it might have been. Oh well, I can look at release lists and take some guesses.

I'm just gonna name-drop it here in case some other folks love it, but I put Descent II on my list. A DOOM-style 6-degrees-of-freedom shooter? Heck yeah. (Sorry to anyone it made hurl, though.)

But even if Neo Geo games fell under the arcade part of this list my favorites aren't in that year rage.

I'm not saying I'm judging you, I'm just saying that Shock Troopers, Metal Slug 1 & 2 & X, KoF '98, Mark of the Wolves, and both Real Bout games came out in this timeframe.

Yes but that was at a time that I moved to start a new job and didn't have access to an arcade with an MVS in it.

It me, the guy who dedicates an entire YouTube Channel to comparing versions of videogames. What's the deal on different versions? I assume if they're relatively close, we're not gonna stress about it? Like, four different versions of RE1 being tracked separately feels both unnecessary and like it would potentially water-down the groups real feelings for the basic game that's at the core of voting for that title?

I mean, I guess someone could feel SUPER STRONGLY about the Randomizer in RE2 on N64 or the new areas in Symphony of the Night on Saturn, but I don't think so? I'm just wanting to sort of institute clarification, I guess. Thoughts, @Issun?

Like I said in the OP, if the difference in the versions makes it a different game, then it's important. Some voters have specified specific platforms, and I thank them for it in case it's relevant. For the most part though, I'll use my judgement given the available information to decide whether to separate entries (which will probably be rarely, if at all).

There's a game I voted for that misses the given timeframe guideline for arcade releases by a year or so, but its later console port circumvents that... which is the version I'm specifically voting for, because it has aspects to it that make it matter to me, so I listed it under that port. Other edge cases warranted inclusion, and others I dropped for the same reasons. There's a lot of rationalization one can introduce to this whole process but I tried not to worry about it too much.

I would assume almost every case of "ports" would be shared votes for a single entry, with specifics like Peklo has called out to be mentioned in the resulting post.

I'll be honest: In my submission, I noted a console platform for PC ports just because I wanted to argue that it belonged to the era.

One week left!

So far these are the people whose lists I have received, so if you have submitted one and your name is not here, please re-submit it.

Submitted my list! Almost everything was PC. But, I was mostly a PC gamer in the 90s.

A reminder also that just because you might not have 25 games you like enough to submit doesn't mean you shouldn't submit a list. In the past two contests I ran, I received lists as small as 5 items. Heck, If you really love just one game from this era. then submit it. That's 35 points it would not otherwise have.

Indeed, y'all get your votes in, regardless of whether you hit 25. These things are always better when you can get lots of people participating!

I didn't have enough for a full list and I didn't let that stop me.

I thought I wouldn't, but then as I was looking at lists of "Best Saturn Games" "Best N64" etc etc, I was like "oh, how did I forget THAT." And my #25 changed several times as I was building the list.
