I’ve never heard of the studio making this, and it looks like at least half a dozen other B level 2D action games. Konami hasn’t had faith in the series enough to adequately fund a game since around the turn of the millennium, and since dedicated handhelds don’t exist anymore to drop off low budget but still good quality titles, something like this is the best we’ll get. The real curse is being a Japanese game series that isn’t popular in Japan, no matter how many magical girls or highschool students they shove into it.

Evil Empire are a very known quantity within the genre, given how enduring an institution Dead Cells alone is, with offshoot projects like The Rogue Prince of Persia continuing that standard. I'm sure they landed this project because of that reliability--and given that the Return to Castlevania DLC for Dead Cells probably turned into a functional audition and proof of concept--but personally I have never liked the studio's output nor do I find their house style as applied to this project interesting in context of the series it's interpreting.

Sorry for being such a grump. I had watched a video recently going over the development of Castlevania 64, back when it had four full characters and subtitle “Apocalypse”. This series used to have real ambition, maybe too much.

I never played much attention to Dead Cells, so the name is unfamiliar. It’s clear they care about the series, so God Bless ‘em.

This anniversary teaser alludes to Belmont's Curse being the "first in line" for new developments during this commemorative year, so one can always hope for a more intriguing take in the form of a yet unannounced project.

Konami has freed MGS4 from PS3. I'm hoping one of those "new developments" is finally releasing Rondo and Symphony on all modern platforms. If they do that (and someone translates the Goemon collection for stateside), I'll lay off Konami forever (or at least for a few years).

*Starts chanting "Demon Castle War!" repeatedly...

It’s wild that Classic Symphony of the Night is not on any modern storefront. I keep my Vita regularly charged just so I can play it via the PS1 Classics version.

I am cautiously excited for Belmont's Curse. I liked what I saw from the gameplay in the trailer, so even though I'm not in love with the Dead Cells pedigree, I still like what I'm seeing.

A M2 3D Castlevania collection would be amazing.

The PS4 version of Symphony is good enough for me. I guess I don't find the changes to be earth shattering.

I'm lukewarm on Belmont's Curse. I didn't love Dead Cells. Hopefully Castlevania B.C. is a little different than Dead Cells.

Well, I didn't realize that this would apparently be a minority opinion, but I think Dead Cells is a GOAT and am really looking forward to this. One of my favourite things about Dead Cells is just how fun even basic navigation is, so I'm expecting this to be a similar joy to play.

Pausing on the map screen I see the legend has markers for save points. Are Dead Cells devs making an actual Metroidvania this go around?

I don't think there's anything in what's been shown suggesting that it's not a boilerplate modern search action. It's just made by a studio who have always been influenced by the series, and literally worked on it already via a tie-in, in the adjacent space of roguelite randomization platformers.

As a kneejerk assessment, this initial showing in its movement and combat rhythms to me suggests that this is a "modernized" genre representative beyond anything else, the kinda game that signals toward what are perceived as the conventional tentpole canon like Hollow Knight, Metroid Dread, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and so forth. That's all laid on top of Evil Empire's fixation on reproducing memetic internalizations of Souls residue, which is a big reason why I don't trust the studio narratively and tonally with anything. Aesthetically the Netflix series also seems a prime influence, another association that's a mark against the work for my preferences. All of this is to say that many things about this project would need to coalesce better than it currently seems for me to cast these preconceptions aside.

You and me, Jbear

We’ll ride this train straight to hell together

I hope it turns out well, even if it doesn't scratch the same itch as an Igavania. Which is why I'm looking forward to Bloodstained 2 more. The first one I felt channeled that sort of manic energy of SotN, a sort of "here ya go, break the game with this" that I always find fun in these games.

And my whip. I'm here for this.
Hey hi I also liked Dead Cells.

I liked but didn't get deep into Dead Cells, but I'm always here for a good Metrovania, so count me in

Per the new trailer, Belmont's Curse doesn't star a reimagined Sonia but newcomer Rose Belmont, Trevor's daughter. There's nothing here that makes me particularly more interested in the game (though it's nice to see Isaac again as far as series pulls go), but whatever this game ends up being, it will have one thing going for it for certain: key promotional art by Katsuya Terada, whose long career has never crossed the series until now.

Oh the French developers got the Japanese artist whose work is heavily inspired by the French artist Moebius to do illustrations for their game from a Japanese franchise set in France. It's like a croissant of cultural exchange where the dough is French and the Butter is Japanese, or vice versa.
