It is more likely, but only because the requirement for the numerals is that you use your subweapon some specific number of times. 16, maybe? The numeral replaces the next heart that would drop if you've met the condition.

My friend from down the road and I have a nice NES + CRT setup. We'll trade the controller back and forth.

I'm trying to get good enough to clear C1 reliably. I've beaten the game many times, but always with save states or a ton of continues and aggravation.

The run up to Death and the final fight with Dracula are the two hardest parts for me.

For the run up to Death in C1, do you guys like to try to keep the holy water, or go with boomerang + III? Everyone online says the holy water is the easiest strategy, but it makes the previous room with the knights so much harder. I can rarely even seem to keep the holy water for the whole level, and even when I do get to Death with holy water, I mess it up anyway. The boomerangs works better for me? Is it worth making a push for a holy water mastery?

The challenge I have with Dracula is that
1. I can only very rarely get 2 hits in a cycle. Only one hit 95% of the time. The other 5%, he appears at the perfect distance, I quickly hit once right as he appears, and then a second time as I jump over his fireballs. Is this just the way it is? Or is it possible to regularly get 2 hits in?
2. Drac sometimes materializes right on top of me and I take damage. I assume this is simply an issue of not reacting quickly enough?
3. I find myself trying both to survive and ultimately defeat the first form and also get a II for my holy water. If Drac appears far away, instead of damaging him, I try to destroy his fireballs with my holy water, hoping to get a II. Is this a ridiculous thing to do? I can only seem to beat the 2nd form with a II - that's why I do it. Am I on the wrong track?

I thought the strategy for 2nd form was alternating whip and holy water and that didn't need II or III?

Finished Ecclesia today. Having rolled credits, my opinion hasn't really changed. The game is Fine, but for me the excessive grindiness and linear area maps just weren't that fun. Even the basic movement feels a bit too sluggish to be satisfying.

I moved on to Portrait of Ruin after that and am already having a better time, even if this "jump off your partner's shoulders" move is the silliest double jump mechanic I've seen in quite a while.

Hm. Maybe you're right. I thought that alternating whip and holy water required at least a II.

Confirmed that alternating whip and holy water requires a II icon! The holy water takes a second to burn on the ground - longer than a single whip strike.

I developed a good strategy to beat Dracula somewhat reliably.

1. Collect about 40 hearts from the candles in the room before Dracula's room to give you enough to work with
2. Leave the 4 candles in Dracula's room untouched as you walk into the room
3. Walk all the way to the left and whip the leftmost candle to collect the holy water. While you do this, Dracula will start to spawn.
4. Destroy the 2nd and 3rd candles with the holy water. This increases your chances of getting a II. Or, I suppose more accurately, works on incrementing the hidden ticker towards earning the II.
5. As opportunity allows it in Dracula's first form, when Dracula phases in and solidifies, through a holy water into his body. When he opens his cape to fire fireballs, jump over them and whip him in the head. The holy water can destroy his fireballs, and there's a probability they will give hearts, and therefore also II icons. The holy water here is not to do damage to Drac, but to give yourself a chance to get a II icon. Eventually you will get a II from this, although it makes the first form a bit more challenging.
6. It is definitely possible to get two whips in per phase. The first has to land as soon as he solidifies, so the position of the phasing has to be ideal.
7. With a II, the second form is trivial. Alternate holy water and whip, and he will never get a chance to jump or shoot fireballs.
8. You played the greatest role in this journey.
