For my money, Natalie Merchant owned this song like no one else. Patti was great, and the Garbage/Screaming Females one is very good too, but it's the 10,000 Maniacs Unplugged version that gives me chills every time. Which one is THE version for you?

I don't think I've heard more than one version of this song and am not even sure which one on the list it is. It'll be fun to check out over the holiday weekend.

It has kind of an interesting history. Bruce Springsteen wrote it but struggled with the lyrics, and a producer convinced him to give it to Patti Smith, who finished the lyrics and recorded the first released version.
