In the past at this little place called McHugh's. It is still around but they changed their recipe (or something) years ago so it is no longer the best.

It almost certainly isn't a fast food place, but if we are limiting it to fast food places, I'd narrow it down to Five Guys or Freddie's

Five Guys has the best giant-fast-food-chain burger. Itā€™s still sort of weird to me that theyā€™ve become a global franchiseā€”I remember when they were a local thing in DC and northern Virginia.

The best burger Iā€™ve ever had in a restaurant, though, was at Big Dā€™s Downtown Dive, in Roswell, New Mexico, of all places. Rather than a bun, it was served on Native American frybread, and it was truly sublime. Apparently the restaurant didnā€™t survive the pandemic, at which I can only wail and gnash my teeth.

It is! I live about a block away from it. Have you eaten there?
To my great regret, no. I rarely got that far north in my Chicago days. Next time I visit family up there, though, I'm clearly going to have to make a pilgrimage.

I think In-N-Out is the best fast-food burger that is firmly in the category of fast-food burgers.

Five Guys makes a better burger than In-N-Out, but I feel like it's trying to do something else to a such an extent that a comparison to McDonalds/Burger King/In-N-Out does not makes sense to me. But then the issue is that Five Guys is also probably worse than and not any cheaper than whatever your best local burger joint is, if you have one. To me it feels kind of like Chipotle, in that if you have a real taqueria there's no reason to go there, but some places do not and for those areas Five Guys/Chipotle are of course a big leap over McDonalds/Taco Bell.

I mean, for chains, I'm gonna go with A & W. I love the seasoning they use in it (which they sell separately now).

Never had Five Guys but I love their music.

Island Burgers and Shakes in New York City had the best burgers (and, even more so, the best shakes), but after having not been there for several years, I looked them up recently and they had closed, presumably due to covid. Five Guys is better than anything else I've tried, so I voted for them.

There's a bunch of good onion burger places around the city and they're pretty solid but my favorite burger is the one at S&B Burgers where they put cheddar, fried onions, green chiles, and chipotle ranch. It's delicious.

Five Guys feels like a burger good enough to kill me (that's why I don't go there very often).

I am amenable to the idea that there are better fast food burgers than in-n-out. But none of them come close to being both the value proposition of an in-n-out burger, or lets me sleep at night as easily. Most fast food chains treat their workers like subhuman monsters. Work at in-n-out is strenuous, but it pays well and workers are at least treated well, and their kitchens are immaculate with some standards for freshness.

My current favorite is a locally owned, non-franchise drive thru, because apparently Iā€™m a hipster down to my fast food burger preferences. They got fresh cut fries though!

It is one of life's great mysteries that the best burgers are found in restaurants that do not specialize in burgers.

Best burger I know of is a local place called the Holy Cow. Excellent burgers plus they source gluten free buns from a local bakery across the street so they were kosher with Mrs Dr Beanā€™s dietary restrictions. Plus thereā€™s a frozen custard shop right down the street so itā€™s just a tasty outing the whole way ā€˜round.

None of the selection above

Also In-n-out is extremely overrated and only California people haven't realized this

Locally, if I want the best burger I can think of, I go to 8oz. Burger; if I want a burger at any given moment, Li'l Woody's was my go-to. I don't know that either of them is the best, though.
