What's good in UFO 50?

Rail Heist is, surprisingly, a really fun 2-player game. It's 2D turn-based head-to-head immersive sim deathmatch at its finest, and pretty hilarious to boot.

Rock On! Island is definitely a real one, I spent like 16 hours getting the cherry in that game and it's one of my favorites in the collection. Overbold is also super cool, but ultimately a little on the slight side. I would have loved to see it expanded into something a bit bigger.

Overbold is great, just because I got to the last fight and then I was like "oh shit, I played this game entirely wrong." I did not use the option to make fights harder a single time, and I was wildly out of my depth. One of the best examples of giving the player enough rope to hang themselves I can think of. I'll go back and play it the right way at some point, but that was a delightful moment of realizing what the game was actually all about. The title should have really tipped me off, hah.

Rock On Island done (gold, anyway). That last level was awesome, but the sheer length of it made it difficult for me to find time for. I ended up taking the train an extra stop and riding it back so I didn't have to start over. Odin 2 does have a sleep mode, but it drains the battery very quickly when a higher end emulator is running, so it's not a realistic option for me. So I basically only use in-game saves to progress.

And that's probably my one real complaint about UFO 50 - some of the games start in bite sized chunks and then scale up as they go so later areas take progressively longer amounts of time. Or, just require longer periods of free time to play. I've been playing a ton of actual retro games and portable games for the last few years and I'm used to just being to play whenever, but for UFO 50 I need to plan out time for certain games. It's a bit of a bummer. I wish they had included a single temporary save-state that deleted itself when you loaded the game.

Anyway, ROI was amazing (and holy shit I just caught the joke in the title). My big revelation during the final level was when you're killing tons of dinos, it's way more efficient to build and upgrade cavemen directly instead of messing with cooking chickens. You basically have unlimited income while the waves are active, so you can just run around placing fully upgraded bow/fire/wheel guys everywhere. I'll go back and do perfect levels someday.

Next up is Pingolf. I can already tell that I'm getting better at it, but wow am I bad at this. I gotta practice my dunks.
