What Should I Play Next? Because I don't like making my own decisions.

Paul's right: you should jam a banana up an ape's butt. And while you're in traction, you can play Donkey Kong Bananza!

I'm going to hijack Johnny's thread for a second and with an easier bit of decisions. Maybe. Perhaps.

Santa did not bring Octopath Traveler 0, so I'm going to have to procure that one myself after the new year, but he did bring Star Ocean: Second Story R and Dragon Quest 1+2 HD2D Remake. Which one to start with?

Minor lore: I have never played any of these games, and I mean the originals. I actually bought Star Ocean: Second Story probably 25 years ago or so because it was the last copy the store had and it was only a 20 spot; never actually played it. While I love Dragon Quest, the only one I could ever be arsed to finish is DQ5 (and Builders 2, if that counts). I've played most of them, enjoyed most of them, absolutely fell off most of them. But I have not played any DQ that is pre-DQ4.

So what should I crack the cellophane on first?

I've never played them either but... ley's say Dragon Quest. Even though it's a remake, I'm the kinda guy who might go with the older one first.

So the thing with the new Dragon Quests is that the 1+2 remake in no way even remotely resembles those games, and is a totally new thing explicitly intended to be played after the 3 remake, and you should probably do that.

OR, spent like 3 or 4 days with an emulator and play the NES versions in order so you know what those looked like and can appreciate all the radical changes. They really don't actually take very long.

Finally finished Bananza. What should I play next:

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - I've played this and spent a lot of time catching bugs and fish but haven't gotten back to it for a while. Could devote a week or two to refresh.
Crystalis - About a quarter way through, I think. Could just finish it.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - A fantasy puzzler, I think? I don't know much about it except it's supposed to be good.
Dredge - Remember I'm On A Boat? That but darker.
Honey, I Joined a Cult - Classic whoopsie doodle.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - I've played this and spent a lot of time catching bugs and fish but haven't gotten back to it for a while. Could devote a week or two to refresh.
They just did a big update adding stuff in January so it's a good time to pick it up again!

Crystalis/finishing a game is always good. Brothers is under 5 hours and very good if you just want something quick.

I'll vote for Dredge. It's a good'un, and I think you'll vibe with it.

That said, Brothers is an all-timer, and you can finish it in an afternoon.

Done Brothers. Now what?

Pokemon Scarlett - Haven't played a main Pokemon game since the first. Seems like a good time to get back into it.
Crystalis - This one is probably a quarter done. Wouldn't take long to finish it.
Building Simulator - Haven't played many simulators. This could be fun.
Endless Legend - No idea what this is. Sounds long.
Hue - Looks like a stylish colour-based platformer.

No particular vote here, but I will say that I think you're likely to bounce hard off of Endless Legend.

If you want something short, I suggest Crystalis. It's also a lot of fun.
For something long, why not Pokemon.

Hue is also short, but it still manages to overstay its welcome. It just never figures out, how to make really good puzzles with its mechanic.

I have Pokemon Scarlet sitting on the shelf still in the shrink wrap. Play that one, for both of us.

> Crystalis - This one is probably a quarter done. Wouldn't take long to finish it.

OK, done with Crystalis. What is next:

Mario Kart 8 - I've played it with friends but not much since I had my own copy my sister's partner gave me when he ordered it by accident or something.
Rygar - I remember the cover but I don't know anything about it.
Building Simulator - I don't know if this is a game you can win but I guess I can try building one house and see if I want to take things further.
Endless Legend - JBear suspects I will not like this. And I do like proving people wrong...
Hue - People have been saying this is a flawed one. Still, colour-based puzzler sounds interesting and it sounds like it's not a long game at least.

Rygar is an action platformer with some light RPG elements. It does share some of the same NES obtuseness that Crystalis has so a walkthrough (or at least a map) can be helpful. It still has its charms though - it's one of my Top 25 NES games.

Rygar is S tier for me. I've always loved that game. Killer soundtrack. Action platformer, light RPG elements, sometimes feels like a Metroidvania-lite because it does have some degree of backtracking after finding traversal items.

I tried playing Rygar blind on NESflix and got stuck pretty quickly. Like, I think I found a grappling thing that opened up traversal options, but still ended up going in circles between a few areas, including what looked like maybe a late game spot I didn’t have the tools to open up yet…

This is going to be a little off topic. The getting stuck in NES Rygar had me thinking.

Did anyone play story mode in Skate or Die 2 and know what to do?

I'm sure I could look this up on the internet, but would be curious to know if anyone figured it out organically or logically. That game was inscrutable to me.

I didn't get nearly as lost or need as much help from watching a walkthrough on Rygar than I expected. Fun little game.

OK, next:

The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild - The best game of 9 years ago!
Shadow of the Ninja - I don't know what this is except it feels like another company decided to Ninja Gaiden.

Breath of the Wild is a massive touchstone in game design history. Playing it (even if you don't end up liking it (but you probably will (because it's really good))) will make you understand many other games better.

Off Topic
Skate or Die 2. I just remember wandering aimlessly around a mall forever picking up stuff on a skateboard. It feels like something a late 80s / early 90s kid would love. But I found the lack of a clear objective infuriating.

On Topic
Breath of the Wild is almost 10 years old? Time needs to start slowing down. Its going to kill me one of these days.

I can't speak to Shadow of the Ninja. My sister and I played Shadow of the Ninja Reborn. It was a super hard action game. We beat it, but it took a lot of deaths and practice to get to the end. Not sure I would say it was worth it.
