what do I need on 3DS?

Maybe it's outshone by the big console versions (I wouldn't know), but I've really been enjoying Captain Toad over the last week or so. Every stage is a tiny single-area, dioramic puzzle-box to be meticulously explored and solved, and they all manage to have this feeling of contrivance and extreme 'designedness' without sacrificing a sense of place. It has the vibrancy and charm of a mainline 3D Mario game, as opposed to the mere inoffensiveness of something like NSMB, and it's interesting to play something where your main verbs have to do with camera manipulation rather than character manipulation, and a great change of pace (for me at least) to play something where the usual gamer-lamer skills aren't the ones being tested.

If you want a DSiWare game, I recommend Xscape, which is a first-person space-tank game with a cool flat-shaded aesthetic and some brain-blasting color palettes. It's the sequel to X on the Game Boy, which was the spiritual predecessor to Star Fox.

EDIT: note that, as a dsiware title, it lacks 3D support

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far! It was delivered today! I was promptly stymied by the parental control PIN, but luckily the eBay seller came through for me (sorry, Shareef, hope you knew that your mom was selling your 3DS). Also annoyed at the lack of a stylus-- I really want to get one that fits in the slot, preferably 1st party-- are there different sizes between DS/i XL, 3DS XL, and new 3DS XL? Mine is the latter.

@Tegan are there any gotchas to be aware of WRT modding?

Also, how much do I need to baby the hinges? I kinda remember Kishi being very delicate with his, but I don't remember if it always had that snapping-into-place sound.

Wasn't there an Aliens game on DS?

The DS Aliens game is Aliens: Infestation. It's 'okay', but the permadeath might be confusing if you learn about this property second hand. It's a sidescroller with a party member system which act as extra life bars. It has save points just like any Metroid or Igavania and if you lose all your party members it's just a regular "game over" and not a roguelike "start over". You can't actually be forced to start over, because losing your last character means you go back to the save point, and you can't save with zero characters...

When playing the game, the actual false worry that will enter your head is "what if I go down to one party member and save? Might I be screwing myself?". In reality you will never do this, both because you wouldn't let yourself and because replacement party members are in ample supply (scattered across the map). The only time supply feels scarce will be during a tough boss fight that takes you down to your last party member. All other times you don't feel like you are relying on those extra lifebars. My memory is really old, but this is the jist of it.

Basically, the system exists to make the game more flavorful as an "Aliens" game. You are going to be more proud that you keep your favorite Marine alive than anything that might theoretically matter more, like avoiding a party wipe (minimal consequences) or avoiding exhausting every Marine on the map (unrealistic, and no matter how poorly you play you can't "waste" the lives of Marines that you haven't progressed far enough to reach).

Interesting. I was always worried I'd screw myself, but it sounds like that was a non-issue. I should perhaps actually try to give it another go.

Theatrhythm: Curtain Call came in and sorry I'm not here right now, please leave your name and number and a brief message after the tone. I guess I need to admit to myself this is the real reason I wanted to get the console.

(I really want to get Somnus, but I don't waaaaaaant to buy the original game too... bah)

I found out today that the method I used is apparently now outmoded by a browser-based exploit

Oh good, that's surely going to be a lot more reliable. Maybe I'll see if I can pick up a refurb model off the Nintendo store for the sake of my current one with a broken top screen. Best thing about virtual NAND is that you can just swap the SD card between units and it's like its the exact same 3DS with all your personal data.

Galaxy Force is just incredible, and the 3D effect on Streets of Rage 2 makes it the best version for me.

It's also the best version of Sonic 2, because you unlock Super Sonic just by finishing it. No need to play the godawful special stages!

Options > Sound Test > play these songs: 19, 65, 09, 17 (you'll hear a jingle) > Exit to title > hold A and press Start > In the Level Select, there's another sound test, play these songs: 01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, 04 (You'll hear a jingle because this is the end of the debug code, but also the beginning of the Super Sonic Code), 01, 02, 06 (You'll hear another jingle because this is the end of the Super Sonic part of the code.) > pick a stage, hold A and press start.

The 3DS version just lets you bypass most of that by beating the game, but you can still just do the code if you want.

Crimson Shroud was a cool downloadable--a dungeon-crawl RPG of the old school, meaning sketchwork maps, miniatures, and actual dice rolling!

I'm sad that I had Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy on my wish list and not its sequel, sounds like the follow-up is the superior one there.

EDIT: Oh, it's like $10 online... I may just... nab that... >_>

I kinda want 3D Outrun, but I've already got Sega Ages: Outrun on Switch. 3D Galaxy Force II is not on Switch, however, so maybe I'll grab that instead.

If you have to pick one I would agree that 3D Galaxy Force II is the one to get in your circumstances.

based on my behavior over the last couple of weeks, it seems like the 3ds game that I needed was TT:FF:CC. (which is still $10 online for the physical copy, as noted above)

why did they put puyo puyo 2 in the $10 pack?! dammit

That's in the Japan-only third volume (the one we got is actually vol. 2) which also includes Turbo OutRun and yes I'm bitter it wasn't released here

It's similar in visual and musical style but plays completely differently. It's a bit primitive, a la the difference between Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III.

I actually didn't see a link to the $10 physical edition of Curtain Call, but I assume it's this one? Maybe I'll grab that and a screen protector (assuming you can still buy 3DS screen protectors these days).

For the record I did pick up 3D Galaxy Force II, which is frickin' amazing for a 1988 arcade title! I've only recently come to realize how far ahead Sega was compared to the rest of the industry back in those days, in terms of their arcade hardware.

Sounds like the second game was what the first game was striving for.

In a lot of ways I think it's true -- SOR1 owes more in feel to Double Dragon, Renegade, etc. whereas SOR2 (along with its immediate sequel) has more in common with Final Fight but with a more rewarding combo and special attack system

The ways in which you can influence the first game's ending are really cool and unique from the sequels, though depending on what you're going for, can be somewhat difficult/tedious to actually play out.

Eh, I'd say Revenge of Shinobi has certain advantages over the sequel (Yuzo Koshiro music for one). Streets of Rage 2 is more of a straight upgrade.

Having said that Streets of Rage 1's music is incredible too, so it may be worth getting for that alone.

Probably their home hardware too. At the time it came out the Mega Drive was a bit of a beast. The Mega CD flattened the PC Engine CD technically. Master System was a very powerful console for an 8 bit.

Personally I feel that Revenge of Shinobi is one of the weaker Koshiro soundtracks and I highly prefer Shinobi III's soundtrack over it. The Murasaki/Akiyama/Nagao team really knocks it out of the park with the beats they made come out of the Mega Drive.
