What are Your Unreleased Holy Grails?

I was looking at old game magazines today to research an upcoming video, and came across a couple games that were shown to magazines, but never came out. SIMS was working on something called Devil Buster that looks sick as hell (especially since I love SIMS' Master of Darkness on the Master System). And I feel like Ultimate Journey is one that always comes up when talking about unreleased games.

Of course, games get dumped all the time. Sometimes, ones we didn't even know existed until they were dumped! Like this unknown WCW game I made a video about last year. But what are the ones you really wish would get found and dumped? We finally got what exists of the Dreamcast Castlevania last week, so this stuff is still finding its way out.

For my part, I'd really like to see (aside from the two I mentioned above):
-The Christopher Columbus shoot-'em-up for Super Famicom
-The Super Famicom port of In the Hunt
-The GBA Mega Man Anniversary Collection, because MMIV and MMV deserve to be in color, goshdarnit.

Also, I mean, it's pretty well documented that there wasn't much to begin with and what was there is gone now, but I'd love to see anything related to the goddamn Hellraiser NES game.

What are yours?!

Earthbound 64, obviously
Super Mario RPG 2 (original version of Paper Mario - mostly for lost plot connections)
Fire Emblem 64
N64 version of Golden Sun
Original version of Quest 64 with a party system

...huh i hadnt even thought about it but all my holy grails are unreleased/heavily modified n64 jrpgs, arent they

Super Megaman X

dead eyes
(He/Him)
Panzer Dragoon Saga to be re-released on something
Mother 3 getting translated
All of Shining Force 3
An actual Lunar 3
I also would like to see the GBA Megaman Anniversary Collection
MOTHERFUCKING Megaman Legends 3

lot of "3"'s there, isn't there? Interesting.

Any playable version of EarthBound 64
The Twin Peaks NES game
Whatever the heck Return of Donkey Kong was
The 32X Sonic Mars prototype
The 3D Sam & Max game that LucasArts was developing prior to being shuttered.
And a random one - The Adventures of Willy Beamish 2. Was in production, and some concept art still exists on the art director's portfolio website (it's the camping ones at about the middle of the page) but was canned around the time Sierra was sold off.

Becksworth

Aging Hipster Dragon Dad
Megaman Legends 3 prototype
The various RE4 prototypes
Metroid Dread
Chrono Break
That “next gen” Gameboy that would have potentially existed between the Color and the Advance had Pokémon not blown up the way it did and any prototype games Nintendo had made for it.

Mega Man Legends 3 is definitely the game I’d pick if I only had one choice. I desperately want more time in that world.

Second choice would probably be Dragon Hopper, the Virtual Boy adventure game that was completed but died along with the system. It’s gotta be out there somewhere just waiting to be dumped.

If I had unlimited wishes I’d go with the second wave of Neo Geo Pocket Color games, as that system was just on the cusp of greatness before it was murdered by pachinko.

Please tell me anything you know about this? I didn't know such a thing was in the works.

Literally everything we know about it comes from this blurb in Nintendo Power:

People speculate it never got beyond the concept, but there's really no way to know if there was ever any kind of proof of concept or not based on this, so I hold out hope something will crop up at some point. That said, it was in development by Hi-Tech Expression so there's a good 99.9% chance it would have sucked, despite how good that description makes it sound.

Came here to post this.
It was going to suck, because it was Color Dreams, but wow

Metroid Dread was probably just a title and nothing more, but that is my MVP

Eurocom was working on a Zelda-esque NES RPG based off of Erik the Viking back in the day. A decade ago the composer, Niel Baldwin, was able to recover the (quite frankly, incredible) soundtrack from his old files, but aside from someone datamining the sound effects from that NSF recently nothing else pertaining to the game has been found.

Probably wasn't based on anything but speculation, but there were rumors of a Crystalis sequel for Neo Geo. I'm guessing it never actually got off the ground, especially since SNK leaned so hard into fighters (and other arcade fare in general).

I'm even more curious about whether Chrono Break was ever anything more than a title. Even just a vague plot/themes treatment would be interesting. (Though it would be hard for anything to live up to that one fan trailer.)

Also, there's that one-page prologue script Matsuno wrote for a purely hypothetical Vagrant Story II, I'm pretty sure nothing else exists for that one either, but damn, wouldn't that be cool.

And of course MML3 goes without saying.

The Twin Peaks NES game

This is bananas.

I didn't even know this existed until this post and now it's MY Holy Grail. Look at those last few screenshots! I want to be Columbus sailing a flying caravel, shooting at 100-ft samurai and the weird head of Osaka Castle!

RIGHT?!

If I had unlimited wishes I’d go with the second wave of Neo Geo Pocket Color games, as that system was just on the cusp of greatness before it was murdered by pachinko.

That's actually another one that I was thinking about when I made the thread: Magician Lord for the NGPC.

Similarly, I'd like to see Castlevania: The Bloodletting, even though it seems like most assets were repurposed into SotN.

Yeah, I'm definitely curious which assets were repurposed. I'm reasonably confident that the red corridor in the marble gallery is, but I'm unsure if anything else was.

If stuff that never got localized/overseas releases counts, I'd want a port of the 64DD F-Zero. It's got a course creator and a guitar remix of rainbow road for the relevant level.

And yes basically any early 32X development stuff is of interest to me, including but not limited to anything remotely playable re: sonic mars

Plus:

- RPG Genjin (a Bonk's Adventure RPG)
- G-Zero (an F-Zero game for Virtual Boy)
- Lufia: Ruins Chaser

I was looking forward to both Starcraft Ghost and Warcraft Adventures.

I also have no idea if the last zone in Demon's Souls was planned to be in the game or if that is an internet rumor. But as much as I like Demon's Souls it would be cool to get another zone in that game.

Other than the obvious Mega Men and Earthbound 64 most of mine goes into the deeply hypothetical. What would the SNES CD-ROM have given us? What about Project Atlantis, the original update to the Game Boy? Same for the successor to the Game Boy Advance.

Also King of Cosplays, which only exists as a single screenshot in a Korean magazine, but was apparently an RPG where your characters got stronger the more convincing their SNK cosplay was.

It’s depressing, because the system was successful enough that it could have kept going, and we got just enough glimpses of the second wave with stuff like Faselei and Neo Poke Kun to see a really quirky and unique system coming into its own. This page has a bunch of rumored and announced titles that let the imagination run wild. Popeye and Betty: Cartoon Land probably wouldn’t have been very good, but isn’t it weird that someone was making that, in the year 2000, for the Neo Geo Pocket?

my mind immediately goes to Project Dream, the RPG being developed by Rare for the SNES.

I think it eventually became what is Banjo Kazooie, but I like the idea of a Rare action RPG alot.

Space Quest VII: Return to Roman Numerals and X-Com: Alliance. I would have loved to see Mark and Scott's return to the SQ franchise and seen what they would have done with 3d graphics in the adventure game space. I also would have loved to see the original X-Com folks take their try at a strategy first person tactical shooter.

That's fascinating, I hadn't seen it before. The giant dinosaur leg crushing you out of nowhere is so Rare.
