My favorite is also about the literal Achievement/Trophy system. In Monster Hunter World there's an achievement for cooking a Well-Done steak which is one of the most basic tasks in the franchise that you're just expected to do with relative frequency so nearly everyone would get it right away. But because World's quality of life improved so much and typical hunt times were so much shorter I never had to, and never did until I realized I had every trophy for the game except that one. So I threw on my favorite set and got a lovely screenshot triumphantly holding the successfully cooked Well-Done steak in the air while both the steak trophy and the Platinum trophy popped.

Yesterday I beat Hollow Knight with 112% completion, and did the Path of Pain, getting the Radiance ending on a Steel Soul file with no save and quit scumming to save myself. Took 3 attempts, about 25 hours total in-game time. Final file time was 10h 10m. Really.... really proud of that.

I think I already told you, but that's an amazing feat. Congrats! It helps that the battle system is really, really fun, and that the game gives you the tools to become a super-skilled master.

You did all that in Steel Soul and it only took you 10 hours?? I am seriously impressed.

Well, you can't lose much time to having to fight the same boss over and over on a Steel Soul run! 😁 Other than that I used a couple guides to determine a "comfortable" route that scaled my power enough for the challenges ahead without being needlessly wasteful in backtracking. But thanks all, I'm still really happy about this.

An addendum to the last, I challenged myself to see how quickly I could complete my favorite objectives in Hollow Knight. Not a "speedrun", because it's not a category, and I wasn't even going for perfection. But I wanted to see how quickly I could do 112%, fight Nightmare Grimm instead of banishing him, do the Path of Pain, and beat the game by defeating Radiance. After a few solid attempts, I managed to do it all in 5hr 45min in-game time. I'm happy with that and will probably move on to playing something else.

And you tried telling me and Mike that you didn't think you were good enough for kaizo. Congrats on your very impressive achievement!

I will probably run some Celeste mods for a while but when I burn out there, kaizo's looking more and more enticing.

I feel like I already posted in here, but I guess I didn't.

I suppose my objectively most impressive gaming feat was gold five-staring every song in the original Rock Band with the drums. It doesn't feel personally like a big achievement considering how much I played and practiced the drums in that game, it just like a natural outcome. But most ppl seem mildly impressed when I mention that.

The thing I'm most proud of though, is winning a small, local CS tournament back in middle school. Me and my friend wiped the floor. I feel like I was actually pretty good back then. Like, good enough to go pro had esports been a thing in the late 90s. That tournament win was objectively not very impressive, but my friend and I would routinely just find random servers and play on them until we either got banned for suspected cheating (we didn't cheat, we were just that good) or until all the other players left because they were tired of getting dumped on. And that tournament was kind of the peak of our gaming careers as people with deft skill.

Beating MGS3 for the first time was another point of personal pride, after having bounced so hard off of the game initially when it first came out. That game's learning curve is brutal, especially vanilla Snake Eater. But I watched a roommate play it one day, took a few mental notes, and went back to it and it was surprising how easy and fun that game is when you stop trying to play it like MGS2 and start trying to play it on its own terms. Eventually beating it on European Extreme was also another big personal achievement.

I think my first thing that actively felt like an achievement was getting to level 255 in the roundgame of Wario's Woods. It seemed like a thing very few people would ever actually do and it took both skill and persistence.

In more recent events, I was proud of beating the "final boss" stages of both Gemcraft - Chasing Shadows and Gemcraft - Frostborn Wrath last year. And to think, there was once a time that I thought I didn't like tower defense games!

Good lord, I never did the DLC, because I hadn't played the game for a few months when it came out, and had lost some of my skills. And when replaying the game, I stopped after the A-sides, because the D-Pad on my controller is just too frustrating. So, I never knew how insane this is, even without the golden berry. This looks insane, half an hour without any mistakes.

Congrats, that must have taken a ton of practice.

I've been busy in the last month or so! Since December, I've completed three longstanding goals of mine in three different games.

First, I finally finished Super Punch Out!! without using save states. It honestly wasn't that hard, especially compared to the rest of the stuff on this list. The fight against Nick Bruiser is tough, but it only took about an hour of practicing to finally get a win against him. Can't believe I waited 27 years to finally get serious about that.

Second, and probably most importantly, I finished (kaizo SMW hack) Grand Poo World 2. This was a big project, even after playing kaizo for over a year. It took 75 hours to finish, including a dozen spent on the (incredible) final Bowser fight. That's 3x longer than I've spent on any other boss, ever! It was worth it for the nail-biting finish when I finally beat him:

And finally, just tonight I finally got a 112% save file in Hollow Knight. I'd been very close to this one before - there's a 111% file on my Switch right now - but I decided to start a clean run and do everything from beginning to end. Well, not quite everything: the Pantheon of Hallownest is going to have to wait for another time. But I finally managed to beat the Pure Vessel at the end of its pantheon (as opposed to by itself in the Hall of Gods), and I threw in my first Path of Pain clear to boot. Super happy to have this one in the books, Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games ever and I enjoy pushing myself a little farther every time I come back to it.

I think Super Punch-Out!! is pretty darn tough, but it's definitely doable. Funnily enough, I played so much MTPO that it prepped me for Nick Bruiser much more than Rick. Rick gave me absolute fits with all the off-speed stuff. Nick was more reaction-based, and I managed to take him down the third time I fought him.

I will likely never, ever finish a kaizo game. Kudos on that for sure.

How much harder is it to get 112% versus just beating The Radiance? That was already really tough.

A long time ago, I beat The Radiance, and according to my achievements, also Knightmare King Grim. But I don't think I ever defeated the Pure Vessel. That fight is hard, even compared to stuff like The Radiance.

Congrats, MCBanjoMike! I'll take a look at the kaizo run later on, but knowing what stuff you play through, and hearing that this was still a Big Thing, that has to be quite a challenge.

Also congrats on Hollow Knight. I never got that much. But it's a very fun game, so you really get much back, when you finally beat a hard challenge.

Heck, I used to think I'd never finish a kaizo hack either, but there are plenty of approachable kaizos out there. GPW2 isn't one of them, mind you. As for your Hollow Knight question, the Radiance is a pretty tough fight, but getting 112% requires beating two bosses that are a good deal more difficult. Nightmare King Grimm was the hardest for me by a good margin, and the Pure Vessel is no walk in the park either. But the toughest part about Pure Vessel is that you have to beat it at the end of the fourth pantheon in order to get 112%. You can practice the fight on its own, and in the past I've beaten it that way, but it doesn't count unless you do it as part of the boss rush.

That's actually just a short clip from the fight, there are a number of clear videos in the Highlights section of my Twitch channel, if you're interested in seeing what the levels themselves look like. And if you've managed to beat NKG, you could probably handle the Pure Vessel. Not everyone agrees with me, but I found PV to be a lot easier than NKG.

Standing Ovation on the 112%. Now I'm sorry I went to bed at a reasonable hour last night and missed it.
That's OK, it's pretty small change compared to your HK accomplishments! If I was to ever go for a steel soul 112% run, would I be allowed to die in Godhome and during the NKG fights? Those are definitely the most dangerous parts of the run for me, although the 3rd colosseum fight and the Radiance are also a little scary.

I think NKG makes you take your game to an entirely new level, and once you have, PV is a smaller step up from that point. I think of them as pretty much equals with different patterns but once you've learned one, you have the skill set to learn the other in shorter order.

Dream boss fights, including NKG are safe. Godhome is safe. Radiance is not, White Palace (including Path of Pain) are not. Colosseum is obviously not.

You're probably right about that, but since NKG is easier to get to than PV, I imagine most people cut their teeth on the former.

If that's the case, then maybe someday I'll actually pull it off! Not sure if my heart could take losing a run 10 hours in, though. Then again, I do like to play XCOM on Ironman...

I can't imagine ever doing a steel soul run. Just this idea, of even playing for three or four hours, and losing it all due to one slip-up is awful to me. I mean, if a game is suited for this, it's probably HK, due to it being so skill based, that you can really learn each boss fight so well, that you don't take damage. At least I think that's possible? Still, that sounds incredibly disheartening.

I'm saying that I'm very impressed, by whoever pulls something like this off.

If I ever try it, I'll definitely keep a standard save file around so I can practice the harder stuff (colosseum 3 and Radiance) before doing them in the Steel Soul file. Most of the rest of the game isn't so bad, especially if you play it safe. Set yourself up a safe spot that you can dream gate back to whenever things get hairy, focus on safe charm builds that maximize health/healing/damage at a distance.
