I used to play The Binding of Isaac obsessively, and while I don't remember what you unlocked for doing it, the hardest achievements at the time were using a character called The Lost to beat the boss rush (which involved basically speedrunning the early game just to gain access) and then later an optional grueling secret boss (Hush). The Lost died in one hit, and I'm pretty sure I did both of those in the same run.

I know there are more, but for some reason that's the only one coming to mind right now.

Uh, is the name of this thread supposed to have that typo?

What are you talking about, I can't see a singl typo.

I did all the Sides and got the collectable non iron-man strawbs, but I didn't do the DLC

and yeah I did EBA on hard rock but that was soooo long ago

I'm not sure if it was clear that my comment was meant tongue-in-cheek. Sorry if not, I didn't want to give the impression of critizising you.

Ocarina of Time: Getting a very high score in the horseback archery minigame will always fill you with immense pride and satisfaction, even if it it doesn't put you in some exclusive club.

But honestly? The thing I'm most-proud of related to videogames is raising thousands of dollars for charity alongside Stephen, MCBanjoMike, Matchstick, CalorieMate and others. I don't know what the current Extra Life total tally is for us, but the most recent marathon alone raised over $2000.

Well, Sarge has me beat for a no-death run of Contra, I was happy to beat it without the 30 guy code, lol!
That and beating the first Turtles game on NES are two of my big gaming achievements.

Ha, I used to suck at the game! I used the 30-life code all the time. At some point, I decided to stop using it, and started clearing it legit. Eventually I started getting really angry with myself for even dying, which was when I knew it was time to go for the no-death. If you've managed to beat it without the 30-life code, you're a lot closer to a no-death than you realize, mainly because the Spread gun is just that powerful.

I bow to your Contra skills, good sir. Do the loops get significantly harder? I've never actually tried to keep playing after beating it.

Also, I did both Mario Galaxy and 3D World, and yes, I remember the horror of the Purple Coins mission now that you've dredged it up from my repressed memories. And Champion Road wasn't exactly easy, either. Both are amazing games, though.

The difficulty does appear to increase with successive loops, yes.

This makes me wonder (and I'll pose the question to the entire thread): what is the hardest game you've beaten without dying? (or have "probably beaten"?)

It's a surprisingly elusive question if, like me, you don't happen to have any obvious answers.

Some games like Super Castlevania 4 or Super Mario World are considered "easy", but the possibility of instant death makes a no-death playthrough unlikely to happen accidently (and somewhat annoying as a challenge, I bet). Other games, especially modern ones, are very long, making beating them without dying very unlikely unless they are not punishing in that way to begin with. Loading a quicksave also feels like it disqualifies a run, so I'm not going to count Doom 1/2.

I'm pretty sure I've beaten A Link to the Past without dying, and I remember this because the game does record your deaths at the end of the credits (with the infamous and obnoxious convention of also counting "save & quit" as a death!). There's a chance I've beaten Soul Blazer without dying, purely from loving the game and playing it so often.

Resident Evil 4? I love replaying that game too but even at my best I'm positive I died somewhere each time.

I've beaten the boss gauntlet in Actraiser without dying.

Edit: I think my Legend of the Mystical Ninja LP was deathless. I would say it is a harder game than LTTP, but it is far shorter and, much like LTTP, it has items you can carry around with you that fully restore your health when it reaches zero.

@dosboot: Honestly... I'm not sure, either. You'd think Contra would be the easy answer, but I don't even think of that game as hard anymore. But... it probably is the one that fits the bill the best, outside of that accidental Batman GB no-death.

Does The Mummy Demastered count? I had a few close calls, but I ended up never encountering the zombie mechanic because I just didn't die. 😐 Metroid taught me well on how to farm for life.

I'll take "didn't die" very literally and not to mean "no damage/no miss." And in that case, for me it must be Contra. Even though I don't find the game particularly hard anymore (though a no miss clear is still tough), I understand that objectively, it's considered among the harder games out there.

I actually think it's a great idea to play/practice a hard game with cheats or save states. If you play it like that, eventually you gain skill with it. One of the reasons Contra feels so easy to me now is because the only way I played it as a kid was with Game Genie infinite lives/invincibility codes. And I and my friend played it over. And over. And over. Just resetting and starting over when we got to the credits. Because of that repetition, the challenges felt rote once I started playing it for realsies.

Absolutely. While I certainly battered at a bunch of hard games when I was younger without those benefits, I've found it to be an invaluable tool for practicing and shortening my learning curve. So many games, so little time, ya know? It really helped me get through Battletoads and Ninja Gaiden III.

Mega Man 2, maybe? I've played the NES Mega Man games so many times I've lost the ability to know if they're difficult or not.

I've definitely been through Soul Blazer multiple times without dying but I'm loath to call the game difficult. Once you understand the enemy patterns, it's fairly easy, especially with the focus on cardinal movements. The bosses are more threatening but most of them can be brute forced, with Metal Mantis and Poseidon requiring a bit of pattern recognition. Man, I love Soul Blazer.

I want to say I've finished Ninja Gaiden 2 (NES) without dying but I may actually be misremembering since NG2 was always my brother's favorite. He played that game with almost religious fervor; I'm pretty sure he's finished it without dying multiple times.

Mega Man 2 is a good one. I feel like a lot of people here have a Mega Man or Mega Man X game that they've probably done deathless.

Posedion, Tin Doll, and the airship Bird sometimes just kill me, especially since I might enter the boss room for the first time and overestimate my ability to remember everything. That's sort of why I'm hesitant to conclude I've done it without a single death.

I agree Soul Blazer is not hard, but it does feel like it gets treated as LTTP's cousin in the SNES library so I thought I'd mention them together. :)

The last time I went through Soul Blazer I thought it might make for an interesting and challenging no-damage run. There’s some aspects to enemy placement and behavior I think would reveal themselves when going for one.

I'm guessing the level of difficulty would be approachable if reloading was permitted (starting a boss over/starting a checkpoint over). Without that -- if you had to take no damage in one go -- oh boy... I'm guessing it becomes speedrunner territory of "play this one game over and over until it works". I mean, I don't think the 2nd boss has consistent stuff going on. He can just cut his path short and run you over. Poseidon's little projectiles that you have to thread between don't always cooperate for me either. Not to mention certain regular enemies, like those freaking mach-speed attack orbs in the Castle level.

(Then again, maybe when up against a wall a person could find strategies for everything...)

I might have beaten Mega Man X without dying. I've certainly beaten Super Metroid without dying, but I'm far too close to that gameplay experience to judge how difficult it actually is.

It's been years so most of those I don't recall, but I do remember that one. Fuck that.

Yeah the levels stick out in my memory because I didn't play the game until it was on Steam, so that was in like 2012 or so. I did still A-rank Green Hill Zone, but I also sped up the chao raising by way of cheats. Nothing against the chao raising, but I had already done that stuff in Sonic Adventure and unlike the change from DC SA1 to SA2, the chao garden differences between SADX and SA2B/PC were pretty minimal (since they were both based on the GC system, which had to support trading chao between them via memory card or GBA tiny chao gardens).

Going back to the game I find that it's actually not quite as difficult as I remember, and I'm actually doing something of a replay right now, and A-ranking stuff with less difficulty than I had the first time around -- of course now I know where the knuckles/rouge hidden item hint guide spreadsheet is so none of those levels take too long any more. Some of those missions were, as I noted, still pretty bullshit, but I didn't realize that while it sucks to use compared to SA1, the spin dash is still a very powerful tool for going fast.

That said, what I feel is a true accomplishment was clearing Shadow the Hedgehog's Expert Mode. Even Sonic Heroes felt like child's play in comparison.

I had everyone at Level ** in Chrono Trigger back on the SNES and I think everyone was also maxed out in Tabs as well, but I can't be 100% sure on that outside of the Speed stat.
