A thread for talking about food items (or dishes or whatnot) that you can only get around your parts. Or ones that you can't get.

So let me start by asking a question of all of the non-US tyrants - do you seriously not have snickerdoodle cookies* in your countries?

*or biscuits for those who use British English

I... think we have them here in Canada? Like, I remember buying a box of vegan snickerdoodles at a health food store, one time.

Bojangles.

I recently learned the heartbreaking news that my one outlet to get Bojangles, a location at Union Station in Washington, DC (where Otakon is held and we usually go to) recently closed for good.

I'd always had to choose between Bojangles and Johnny Rockets when Nadia and I went, and despite the latter closing here in Toronto, Bojangles always won out. So it's an extra twist of the knife to find out it closed, too.

And for one final bit of seasoned salt in the wound?

It looks like that Bojangles is being replaced by a Popeyes, of all things.

Speaking of fried chicken chains - it seems crazy to me that KFC only offers extra crispy chicken in the US.

I feel like there are snickerdoodles in Canada but I ain't ever seen them. Or are entirely sure what they are. Like, cinnamony cookies?

Yes, they are more or less just sugar cookies that are also seasoned with cinnamon.

As for local food, our province has a local candy bar, the "Pal-O-Mine".

If you're being really old-school about it they have to have cream of tartar in them, but that's not true of the majority of them anymore.

Used to have it here, then KFC Canada realized they weren't sucking enough.

Then they brought it back a couple of years ago as an LTO, but you couldn't find it anywhere, at least not in Toronto that I could find.

I live in the home state of Bojangles but don't really eat chicken much so I hadn't given them a second glance... until recently when my partner introduced me to their Bo-rounds (little hash-brown potato hockey pucks basically) that are actually pretty dang tasty. And they do perfectly acceptable fast-food breakfast sandwiches as well, so we often get them when we have to get out on the road to go somewhere in the morning.

Their chicken is great, but yes, their breakfast menu is what puts them over the top. I really miss their country ham biscuits right now.

Really, their biscuits are just the best in general. So good.

To that point, I also have to recommend the Bo-Berry biscuits -- their biscuits with blueberries, drizzled in icing. So good.

I’m from the Chicago area originally, and one of the things I really miss is Chicago-style Italian beef. The greater NYC area is in most ways a food paradise, but for some reason I just can’t find Italian beef out here. I’m convinced that it’s a national food trend waiting to happen.

I just learned about Spiedie sandwiches, which I've never heard of. I have no objections to marinated skewered meat on bread.

So, here's something: they brought Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles "back" to Canada!

I put "back" in quotes, because you could find them imported in some stores, and there used to be a version here which bore the name and branding, but took the "pebbles" part of the name a little too literally, and the rock-hard puffs were nothing like the sweet flakes of flavored rice that have been available in the States since the Nixon administration.
