Werewolf Mafios in Spaaaaaace: Among Us!

I'm really surprised this game hasn't gotten more traction on Talking Time, considering what a huge Mafia playerbase we have.

So if you're familiar with Mafia, or Werewolves, or any of their clones, Among Us is an adorable mobile/Steam game that plays very similar, just with a real-time element to it. The basic idea is that you're a motley bunch of colorful crew members - up to ten - that are trying to pilot a spaceship of some sort (there are three total, with different layouts and objectives). In theory, crew members are just running around, completing mundane tasks to keep the ship functioning. HOWEVER!!! Among these innocent souls, there are between one and three impostors (the actual number being public knowledge before the game starts), sabotaging the ship and killing off the crew members.

Crew members (and impostors) can call a crew meeting when a dead body is discovered, and can also summon the crew together with emergency meetings. Just as in Mafia and its ilk, the members of the ship discuss what evidence they've found and what suspicions they might have. At that point, they can vote to jettison one of their own into space, or they can skip and not kill anyone off. The game ends when either the crew members have completed all tasks, OR the crew members have jettisoned out all impostors, OR impostors number half or more of the remaining population.

What's unique here is the real time element. Tasks keep crew members distracted and forces them to wander around the ship. Also, some tasks can "prove" a crew member - ie, there's animation proof that at least someone is completing this task - while most others can be sneakily imitated by a devious impostor. Additionally, instead of night kill phases, impostors can kill whenever, as long as their kill cooldown timer is up - but with this, comes the element of discovery. But what happens when it's two people accusing each other of committing the crime, with no other witnesses around? SHENANIGANS! There's also the ability for impostors to sabotage critical ship systems, also on an adjustable cooldown. Some of these are inconvenient to the crew members - shutting off lights or communications, which makes it easier for dastardly deeds to be committed, or severally hampers the progress of the innocent. However, impostors can also shut down things like oxygen exchanges or reactors, which, if not dealt with in a timely fashion, will result in a kill off of the crew and an instant win for the baddies. Lastly, impostors can travel around the ship via vents ("venting"), which is a very convenient way to get out of a pickle, but also risky in that a witness will gladly call you out for it.

The game has been around for a couple of years, but it exploded over the summer and now the game boosts the highest number of viewers on Twitch. It's amazing, and I can't stop playing it, and I want to play with y'all if you're interested.

I've been hearing about this all over the place lately, and despite being kind of tired of mafia/werewolf stuff in general, the mechanics for this one of tasks etc. make it seem like it could be pretty fun. It gives you something a little more concrete to go off of, like "I saw X over here so they can't be guilty," or "I ran into Y coming out of the room with the dead body in it, PRETTY FISHY" instead of just trying to read tea leaves over accusations or whatever. I think I'll check it out!

I played this with some friends for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I was surprised at how much fun I had.

Worth mentioning that the mobile version is free (with ads in between games), so it's really easy to try it out and see if you like it!

I enjoy watching videos of it from the non-scummy content creator groups (or relatively non-scummy), but trying to play it would be an unending source of stress for me.

Thanks for this! I gave it a try. It's fun, but I'm not sure I understand why it blew up. It reminds me a lot of Mush but much quicker. (Aside: TIL Mush was made by the same developers as Dead Cells. Weird!)

The longform approach Mush takes works for that game, but coordination is much more difficult in Among Us. That's good, because it seems like this game would be trivially solved by the buddy system. There's no pressure for the crew to finish their tasks in a reasonable timeframe.

I've been tricked by buddying up with someone who watched me get medi-scanned who was an imposter. Like, why don't you kill someone alone in the med bay.

But she was our least aggressive player and never used that trust to actually, you know, kill people.

OK, but it seems like if you separate into threes at the start, you're guaranteed a win (because the impostor will never have a clean kill), and if you separate into pairs, then it should be very easy to determine who the impostor is once a body is found.

I also got this on Android recently, but only played once with the minimum number of people so it didn't work well. Definitely want to try it again.

There are options to help with the buddy system.
You can turn off confirmation on ejection, which can really help when you manage to land the blame on someone else by framing them.
the sabotage tasks can also be used to great effect to split up or redirect town away from bodies and seeing where a kill happened.
If all else fails just shorten the kill timer to allow them to get the kills they need that much faster.

In addition to getting me to play Among Us, this thread has gotten me to boot up Mush for the first time in years. You can get a gold membership for free these days (it gives a price, but one of the payment options is "free").

I played this for a couple hours tonight with some friends and had a good time. I was an imposter twice in my first three games, and actually won one of them, but it was tough because you kind of need to know what's going on in the game to convincingly lie. I had more of a grasp on the game after a while but of course my opportunities to try being an imposter dried up.
