We'll see about that WAKKA WAKKA!

The Metal Gear brand of weird nonsense seems completely up my alley so it's weird I've only played one of these and it's the one where you aren't Solid Snake (mostly).

Honestly you only play as Solid Snake in like... 4 out of 11 games, (or like 15 but that gets weird and headache-y), and people habitually forget the first two games even exist.

kinuyo-pixel.jpg
Shit, this Pac Man 2 gag I uncorked kinda took over the entire goddamn contest...

soya-pixel.jpg
Hang on! Whoa. Crap crap crap. I'm so dead.
kinuyo-pixel.jpg
What're you freaking out about, sis?
soya-pixel.jpg
The post-interview room is empty. Everyone was supposed to wait until the contest was over to hear the final results...but no one's in there!
kinuyo-pixel.jpg
I'm sure they just left, Soya. You're acting like something sinister happened.
z80Judm.gif
It's-a me, PAC-MAN, wakka wakka, kept you waiting, huh?

kinuyo-pixel.jpg
Um, did you EAT those bastards?

OBJECTION! THIS REMINDS ME OF A PUZZLE, WAKKA WAKKA

RUN!

Oooooooh... I get it...

This is foreshadowing the fact that Wakka from FFX will take the #1 spot.

Alucard (Castlevania series)
100 Points, 4 Votes, Highest Vote: #1 (Aurelia)
Smash Potential: He's interested in this.

Alucard, son of Dracula, made his first appearance in Castlevania III, but it wasn't for another seven years that he would come into his own in Symphony of the Night, and a big part of the joy of playing that game is how he controls. Just buttery smooth jumping from platform to platform without a hitch. Pity it was the last 2D game ever made. Personality wise, he tends to be cold and matter of fact about his mission to defeat his father, but he is not emotionless. Even as overacted as it is, there is a certain scene late in SotN that still hits like a truck.

Mindblowing Fact: Alucard is "Dracula" spelled backwards.

I voted Alucard! He was near the bottom of my list 'cause he doesn't get a whole lot of actual characterization, but he's just got that cool going on.

I had Alucard at #2 on my list.
he's just got that cool going on
And I guess

Mindblowing Fact: Alucard is "Dracula" spelled backwards.
The fictional Dracula is based on the real Dracula - Vlad Tepes II / Vlad the Impaler. Vlad got his other nickname from the nickname of his father Vlad II. Vlad II was known as Dracul, the Dragon. Vlad II was the son of Dracul i.e. Dracula. So I think what this all means is that Alucard's nickname would be Draculaa.

Zero (Mega Man franchise)
107 Points, 5 Votes, Highest Vote: #5 (LBD_Nytetrayn)

Smash Potential: You know the meme.

Zero is cool. Zero is the badass. Zero is the guy I will never choose in Mega Man X4 because I am afraid of difficulty. I'm gonna be honest, while I loved Zero in X the first, I kinda fell of the hype train for the series after the 16 bit era. I didn't play another game after X2 until ZX, when Zero had passed from being a focal point in the series (I played X4 much later, in 2015). Still, he is important, and his presence in the first X game really did elevate it and he became one of the most iconic characters in the franchise, as evidenced by his ranking here. Plus his theme fucking RULES.

Zero was in the middle of my list.
I really enjoyed some megaman games on the NES. My brother and I would draw little comics of new megaman bosses.
Although I didn't own an SNES, one of my good friends did and seeing and playing Megaman X for the first time, just blew me away. The music and the story captivated me. And when Zero flies in like a badass, my child brain instantly knew this was the most amazingly cool character ever. Super glad to see Zero in the top 10.

Alucard wasn't on my list since I came to Castlevania much later so those characters don't stick in my nostalgia brain as much. But you can't deny the cool of that character, especially in the intro before he gets stripped of all his upgrades.

Whew!

Kirby (Kirby franchise)
109 {Points, 5 Votes, Highest Vote: #8 (Johnny Unusual)
Smash Potential: I dunno I hear he sucks.

First you draw a circle. Then You dot the eyes. Add a great big smile and presto, it's Kirby!
Named for Nintendo's lawyer, John Joseph Kirby, who was key in keeping them in the game long enough to become what they are today, Kirby is a pink puffball. He is best known for inhaling enemies and copying their abilities and also for being a joyous fellow. He is also the guy that gets the gang back together in Smash Bros. Ultimate. Pop in a Kirby game and have some fun today!

Hey Claire, question.
claire-pixel.jpg
Yeah, what up girl?
takara-pixel-1.jpg
This is the first time Wilds has collaborated with someone else in one of these, right?
claire-pixel.jpg
Well, not exactly...the ones he ran were mostly him but had some help here and there. BEAT went ham on the box art, for instance...
takara-pixel-1.jpg
Yeah, I missed that. Soya never stops talking about it.
claire-pixel.jpg
It was pretty epic...although I was sitting out that one too.
flavia.jpg
Ladies...
claire-pixel.jpg
...but yeah, Issun's the first co-host. Why do you ask?
takara-pixel-1.jpg
He seems to not be...himself.
flavia.jpg
Hey, you two.
claire-pixel.jpg
If what Soya said is true, the Pac-Man terrorizing this thread ate all the prior guest characters. Maybe...
flavia.jpg
Analyzing time is OVER we need to MOVE IT before we LOSE IT girls!
stcOymA.gif
HAMMER! HAMMER! WAKKA WAKKA, YAAAAAAAAhhhhhhh!!! Hy-yah!
takara-pixel-1.jpg
THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THAT THING?!??!
flavia.jpg
A blended Kirby PAC-MAN monstrosity! We gotta mosey!

Everyone please remain calm. I heard the Pac Man and then he had this weird echoey laugh and then Wildcat's homies encountered a fucked up version of Pac Man but I'm sure evrything will be fine. The Pac Man you know and love is still...

Oh. Hmmm....

Bowser (Mario series)
109 Points, 5 Votes, Highest Vote: #5 (Johnny Unusual)

Smash Potential: He just might make it.

The King Koopa. The Big Guy. He nabs Peach, Mario rescues her. On and on into perpetuity. Some attempts have been made at fleshing him out, mostly in the RPGs and the 2023 movie. But mostly he just wants his Peaches, don't ask him why because he doesn't go to therapy. He will just forever be in Mario's way, though if you axe him nicely he'll probably step aside.

GLaDOS (Portal series)
123 Points, 4 Votes, Highest Vote: #2 (Violentvixen)

Smash Potential: She'll make you the past president of the Being Alive Club

GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is one of the most beloved villains in game and is a frontrunner for most quotable video game character of all time. She starts off sounding like a friendly AI leading you through a series of tests, but as time goes by she reveals herself as much more mendacious and murderous than she did at first blush. The scientists at Aperture eventually had to install a morality core when she tried to flood the station with a deadly neurotoxin in order to stop her from trying to flood the station with a deadly neurotoxin. Her antics in the first game are legendary, but she gets even more play in the sequel, where her voice actress, Ellen McLain, outshines seasoned vets J.K. Simmons and Stephen Merchant. Much of the Portal series has been memed to death, but all it takes is hearing that voice spewing out another vicious quip and you want to dive right back in.

Luigi (Mario series)
165 Points, 6 Votes, Highest Vote: #1 (Daikaiju)

Smash Potential:
ChwVgKz.gif

Here he is! Once again, Talking Time's favorite Mario! He spends so much of the games and other media in Mario's shadow, but we know the score. We know he's better at video games because nearly every game you can choose him in is more challenging when you do. He wouldn't admit it because he's modest, but Luigi is more adept at jumping and he vacuums ghosts! Even with all that, he'll always be looking up to his brother.

What hasn't been said about Luigi? The taller, more skilled (if Super Luigi WiiU is anything to go by), Mario Brother is a hero all younger siblings who had to wait their turn and deal with their elders' shenanigans ("Let's let player 1 be able to pause player 2's game!" Not cool, SMB1). Fearful in the face of danger, and yet he still faces it head on. We are all Luigi, now more than ever.

Samus Aran (Metroid series)
172 Points, 6 Votes, Highest Vote: #1 (WildcatJF, RT-55J)

Smash Potential: She is one of the more popular characters to use, I believe.

Where were you when you found out that Metroid was a girl? Samus was a major step forward for the representation of women in games. In a medium full of women who were either scantily clad or maidens in distress or both, Samus was a competent, independent badass who spends 99.99% of the first few games the complete opposite of scantily clad. She's a loner whose only friend for a long time was a baby Metroid. Unfortunately, Other M came along, ruined a lot of her agency and was arguably straight up character assassination. Sadly, things haven't really changed as much as we might like since 1986.
