Vyse (Skies of Arcadia)
73 Points, 3 Votes, Highest Vote: #2 (WildCatJF)
Smash Potential: Blue Rogues attack!

Vyse is one of those characters that, on paper, should be the most generic type of JRPG hero. In practice, he is a beloved, enjoyable, iconic protagonist, thanks in no small part to the writing, which brings his bravery, caring, and joie de vive into sharp focus. He is inspired by the protagonists of Ghibli films in all the best ways. Release Skies of Arcadia HD you cowards!

Celes Chere (Final Fantasy VI)
76 Points, 3Votes, Highest Vote: #! (Kirin)

Smash Potential: She's a general, not some opera floozy!

One of the 3 Generals of the Gestahl Empire's forces, Celes was given a Magitek infusion at a young age to turn her into a supersoldier. The fact that she was raised in the military means she is quite closed off emotionally. Even so, the longer the war goes on the more she starts to question if what is happening is right. After she learns that General Kefka has decided to poison soldiers and civilians alike at Doma, she outright opposes the empire's plans and is imprisoned until she is rescued by Locke. While it takes a while for her to warm up to the returners, Celes's staunch sense of justice and her need to truly belong somewhere eventually make her one of the group's strongest allies, to the point where she is the one getting the gang back together after the thing happens.

Eventually, all three of Gestahl's generals turn against him, with Leo siding with Celes and Kefka choosing another path...

HEY!

Celes was my #1! Way back when we were submitting votes Issun asked if I wanted to write something for her so here’s what I came up with:

Celes may not be the on-the-box-art hero of FFVI, and as such doesn't show up much in series crossovers like Dissidia, but she has just as much claim to the protagonist role as any of the large cast. In fact, it's easy to argue that the entire back half of the game is built around her emotional journey, building herself back up from a place of having seemingly lost everything, just as you literally build the party back up around her. On top of that, she's such a diverse and multi-talented character - reformed general of an imperial army, Magitek knight able to nullify and absorb magic, reluctant but successful opera star, capable swordswoman and mage, and a lynchpin for her friends and loved ones. In a cast full of interesting characters, she's the one who brings everything together, both figuratively and literally.

Celes is very cool, even if I still have no idea how you're supposed to use Runic.

This one's taken awhile so I must forgotten that I had asked for write-ups. Sorry everyone.
No worries. I've been having cold feet about my write-up anyhow. :3

Essentially if you're facing a enemy that casts a LOT of magic, Runic acts as a arcane lightning rod, absorbing the spell and refilling Celes's MP.

Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI)
81 Points, 3 Votes, Highest Vote: #5 (4-So)

Smash Potential: I mean, bro destroyed the entire world.

Kefka is one of those rare villains who actually succeeds in his goal. It's hard to know what he was like before, but he was the original experimental Magitek Knight, when the process was not yet perfected, and something in him snapped. The Kefka we know is chaotic and murderous, destroying for no other goal than that it amuses him. He is The Joker with magical power but he also carves his own path as a villain. Quite literally. On top of all his other heinous crimes, he eventually destroys the entire world, and all our heroes can do is reassemble to defeat him and find a way to rebuild as best they can. There's also his signature laugh.

🤨

not to complain about people's tastes, just kind of a funny outcome right here

In my mind, Sephiroth was the more iconic Final Fantasy villain but much more like the generic stoic, cool anime villain I felt nothing toward. With Kefka you feel he's a nasty, petty little shit and theres nothing more awful than granted Godhood to him. Much more compelling to me.

Had an honorable mention ready to go but then I saw that weird Pac-Man gif and when I looked back it was gone. What is going on?

You sound like you're hallucinating. I wonder if you might have contracted ... Pac-Man fever.

I SAID I'M SORRY. OFF CAMERA.

Catching up on the thread.
I had Celes as my #19 and for reasons that i could not state better than Kirin did above.
I had Phoenix Wright as my #25.

Mario
82 Points, 4 Votes, Highest Vote: #1 (4-So)

Smash Potential: I honestly don't think anyone would put Mario in Super Smash Bros. Come on, man.

What is there to say? Eetsa him, Mario. Mr. Videogame himself. Whether or not he and his dad Shiggy saved game or if omething else would have come along, Super Mario Bros. was hugely important and it sold the NES by being just a really darn good video game. And now Mario is everywhere you look. He might even be behind you right...

Eh, what's that?

Marin (The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening)
87 Points, 3 Votes, Highest Vote: #2 (RT-55J)

Smash Potential: Could this be your big chance?

One of the most memorable parts of Link's Awakening, Marin is the young woman who finds Link washed up on the shores of Koholint Island after a shipwreck and nurses him back to health. She is kind, helpful, and possessed of the most beautiful singing voice on the island. She teaches Link the Ballad of the Wind Fish, helps him access a key location, and is just a delight to encounter along the journey. She often wishes she could be a seagull so she can leave the island and she just might get her wish.

She kind of reappears as Malon in subsequent games but it is her original incarnation that stole our hearts.

Solid Snake (Metal Gear series!?)
97 Points, 4 Votes, Highest Vote: #8 (Purple)

Smash Potential: !

To fully tell Solid Snake's story would take... well, several games, actually. He is one of x number of clones of Big Boss (so called because he has surpassed even The Boss), a supersoldier from the cold war era who learned some dark secrets about international relations and went rogue in response. Snake doesn't know this when he is sent to stop Big Boss's plans, and subsequently Liquid Snake, who took over the Outer Heaven group after Big Boss's disappearance. The overall Metal Gear saga is not the most convoluted storyline in games only because Kingdom Hearts exists.

Snake's strength is stealth, though he can handle himself in a fight if he gets caught. He seems cold and unemotional but this is because he hides that side of himself in order to be a more efficient soldier. This does change as he becomes more and more conflicted about his role in things. Snake would also do well on Jeopardy as he knows how to answer in the form of a question.
